That's the threat facing lawmakers if the special debt committee fails to propose at least $1.2 trillion in deficit cuts, or if Congress rejects its proposals.

New York (CNNMoney) – Three years after a financial crisis pushed the country deep into recession, an overwhelming number of Americans - 90% - say that economic conditions remain poor.
The number, reported Friday in a new CNN/ORC International Poll, is the highest of Barack Obama's presidency and a significant increase from the 81% who said conditions were poor in June.

(CNN) - Democrats are looking to reach the key Hispanic demographic through a new Spanish-language television ad that slams Republicans for their resistance to President Barack Obama’s jobs bill.
The 30-second spot, titled "Siempre Dicen No” ("Always Say No"), was produced by the Democratic National Committee and will begin airing this weekend in Denver and Las Vegas - cities in two key battleground states that Obama won in 2008 and is looking to win again in 2012. Both have large Hispanic populations.

CNN: House approves short-term funding plan
Congressional approval of the measure keeps the government funded through October 4. The House will then have to consider a more comprehensive measure that would keep the government funded through November 18.
