Perry open to sending troops to Mexico against drug cartels

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN) - Rick Perry signaled Saturday he would be open to sending U.S. troops into Mexico to combat drug cartels should the situation arise.

After speaking at a house party in Manchester, the Texas governor was asked a series of questions about the border and his stance on illegal immigration.

He said the leaders of Mexico and the U.S. should meet after next year's elections to address the deadly drug trade in that country.

"It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill these drug cartels and to keep them off of our border," Perry said.

Campaign press secretary Robert Black said Perry wanted to cooperate with the Mexican government and wasn't ruling anything out.

"He's going to work with the Mexican government to do what's necessary," Black said.

Perry also fielded questions on his stance on illegal immigrants already in the country, and offered a glimpse of the stance he may deploy on the debate circuit. The issue has offered his opponents the chance to wound Perry in previous debates.

An audience member at the house party asked Perry about his support for a Texas law that grants in-state college tuition to the children of some illegal immigrants.

Perry defended his stance as being widely popular among state legislators and asserted it was a states' rights issue. And he told the audience that - as a border-state governor - he was the only candidate with the experience and "courage" to tackle illegal immigration.

"I'm the only one that's been dealing with it for the last 10 years, and I know how to secure that border," he said.

He also took a subtle dig at his opponents, who have attacked the Texas governor's conservative bona fides on illegal immigration at a series of debates this fall.

"I don't have the privilege to stand on a stage and say, oh here's what I would do," Perry said. "I've been governor of Texas for 10 years. I have to deal with these issues, real-time."

Texans can have Rick Perry. The rest of us think Texas should just go ahead and secede and become part of Mexico. Bye.

Holy Jumpin JacK Flash this guy gets bonkier by the minute. Holy Sheet this guy is really nuts. This guy has a answer for everything and every one of them is nuttier than the last one. I notice he has no real answer on how to really fix America in any serious way. He is just another Republicant Racist who will do anything to stop Obama weather it is hurst America and its citizens or not, the only thing a little different about him is he is a real fruit cake and just a little dumber and nuttier than the rest of his buddies running for the White House.

That stupid s o b better not sending any troops into Mexico. If he wants to stop the drug cartel she should stop the drug addicts of this country from buying the drugs. This country has the biggest drug population of the world. They are are the ones creating the market.

What an idiot! He's been dealing with illegal immigration for 10 years? Than why is it worse than ever? I would say that shows he has not effectively dealt with the issue. He is a figure head. He has no vision, no leadership ability, and is in no way competent to be president or even governor of Texas for that matter.

More importantly, does Mexico welcome US troops on their land? The last public statements were "thanks, but we'll do it ourselves".

Mexico has a less than ideal history of US intervention/invasion as recent as the early 20th century (e.g. Pancho Villa, 1916).

Another Republican another war to get us into. What in the"H" is this idiot thinking. Our military has enough on its' plate and we are going to cut their budget too! Hand this stupid, incompetent fool a rifle, drop him off in cartel land and let him be the warrior hero he thinks he is.

Great let's invade Mexico..... Seriously I really doubt if the Mexican government is going to welcome us troops on it's soil. Try working on the consumer side of it here and the rest will follow.

The cartel can't hold a candle to our military. Our military eliminated Osama Bin Laden. Mexico needs help. We help everybody else in the world why not Mexico? The Cartel needs an asswhooping, & our military has the power to make it happen. Sigh!

Gotta love that small government! Repubs only complain about big government when Dems are in office. It doesnt apply to them.

Ah yes -- The Republican cannot wait to get elected our President so he can start another war. I wonder if he will ask that it be funded, or whether he will offer an exit strategy, unlike Bushy and Dicky?

This idiot has been Governor of the largest state that borders Mexico for ten years, and has watched while the druggies have brought tons of their product into the State that he swore to defend. What has he been waiting for. He backed the secession of the State from the Union which in itself is treason. What a dummy. He should put W in his jet and let him go and bomb the hell out of the druggies. W likes to dress up like a fighting man since he was too chicken zzzz to go and fight when he had a chance.

This is no surprise. Republicans are usually ready to deploy troops. I think he would find a lot of support for that, at least in the border states.

Send troops into another country to "deal" with a particular group...

Do ANY of the GOP realize they're recreating 1930's German history?

Perry's way of dealing with border security was 8 Bush years of doing/saying nothing and 2 years of crying/whining how it was all Obama's fault.

At what point are we going to agree that we are not the world's police department? Let the people of Mexico hire Xe or some similar outfit if they need/want extra help.
