Perry's weekend attention: Wanted or unwanted?

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry grabbed headlines throughout the weekend, putting the campaign on defense following a couple controversy-filled days for the Texas governor.

A front-page Washington Post story Sunday exposed the eyebrow raising name of a hunting camp leased and frequented by Perry and his father. "Niggerhead" was painted across a rock at the gated entrance of the property, according to the report. But Team Perry was quick to clarify the account, issuing a harsh statement early Sunday morning after CNN contacted the campaign.

Former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele responded to TIME.

"A number of claims made in the story are incorrect, inconsistent, and anonymous, including the implication that Rick Perry brought groups to the lease when the word on the rock was still visible," Perry communications director Ray Sullivan said in a statement. "The one consistent fact in the story is that the word on the rock was painted over and obscured many years ago."

Sullivan said the governor's father, who the paper reported first leased the property in 1983, painted over the offensive language in the early 1980s. Sources quoted in the Post story said the word was visible until a few years ago.

The first reaction to the story from a Republican presidential candidate came from Herman Cain who appeared on two Sunday morning talk shows and called the property name "very insensitive."

On "Fox News Sunday," the former Godfather's Pizza CEO, who is African American, said there "isn't a more vile, negative word than the N-word, and for him to leave it there as long as he did, until before, I hear, they finally painted over it, is just plain insensitive to a lot of black people in this country."

Perry's camp shot back again, this time directly to the GOP rival.

"Mr. Cain is wrong about the Perry family's quick action to eliminate the word on the rock, but is right the word written by others long ago is insensitive and offensive," Sullivan said in a statement. "That is why the Perrys took quick action to cover and obscure it."

While the ranch name consumed much of the Beltway chatter Sunday, it was Perry's comments about sending troops into Mexico to combat drug cartels that received the most attention Saturday.

"It may require our military in Mexico working in concert with them to kill these drug cartels and to keep them off of our border," Perry said after speaking at a house party in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Perry said the leaders of Mexico and the U.S. should meet after next year's elections to address the deadly drug trade in that country.

Campaign press secretary Robert Black said the border governor wanted to cooperate with the Mexican government and wasn't ruling anything out.

"He's going to work with the Mexican government to do what's necessary," Black said.

– CNN's Rachel Streitfeld and Gabriella Schwarz contributed to this report.

Call me crazy but I think helping the Mexican government fight the Cartels is a pretty good idea! It will keep Americans that live in border towns safe and it will make Mexico a little more tolerable to live (i.e. less illegal immigration). It's an out of control mess down there... not to say we should make it our problem but, it is our problem because the violence is spilling over into places like Laredo, TX. How many kidnappings does it take for our government to do something? Yup... it's AMERICANS TO THE RESCUE YET AGAIN!! Now, I don't think we should send a whole bunch of troops... just a few well trained teams to go down there and bust some heads.

Seriously, Mexico is embroiled in a civil war w/ some ruthless advesaries? Do you want them coming here even more and enacting retaliation? Think. When we were sending military assitance to South America ,we didn't have them at our backdoor. The days of Poncho Villa being raked w/ machine gun fire by Dougboys are gone. The way we fight wars these days would end up costing a lot of Mexican civilain lives and even more people hating our guts. The best thing that Perry can do is shut the F up. Or not since he's not helping his cause any.

US politics and elections are not about selecting who is best for the Country, but which one is left standing after all the negative attacks. No wonder the Country is in the mess it is and getting more of what it deserves.

So continues the American mantra hold on to what you can and blame someone else when it all falls apart

I don't want to hear ANYONE telling me again the Republican Party is not full of ignorant, hate-filled racists. It started back in the McCain campaign with McCain's "birther movement" and moron Palin saying then candidate Obama "pal'd around with terrorists". Once President Obama became President, Republican Senate Leader stated and still says his "sole goal is to destroy Obama". Boehner and Cantor show constant disrespect for the Office of the Presidency. FOX "news" spreads LIES, hate, fear-mongering, and open racism every single day. The tea party nutjobs are openly racist and scary extremists.

THIS Republican Party is NOT one I recognize. It is NOT about serving the PEOPLE. They serve the corporations who buy them to the detriment of what is best for the PEOPLE and the Country. Where is all the work they were supposedly going to do on JOBS??? EVRYTHING Republicans do is to obstruct ALL legislation designed to help the economy, the job market, and the PEOPLE. They are trying to KILL ALL AGENCIES that protect us from polluted air, land, water, food, medicine, and would not even fund VICTIMS OF DISASTER!!! Who are these sub-humans who try to laughingly convince how "Christian" they are????
Republicans are desperate, unethical, have no character, no integritry, NO VALUES, and NO RESPECT for anything. They have gone state-by-state taking away OUR RIGHTS – worker rights to be able to stand up to abusive corporations, trying to end the minimum wage, ending the healthcare rights of women, and WORST taking away OUR RIGHT TO VOTE.
You had better check you state voter laws before 2012 because in many Republican-controlled states you will NO LONGER BE ABLE TO VOTE without a SPECIAL ID. They have ended early voting so you wil have to stand in line all day to vote. It is called VOTER SUPPRESSION, IS ILLEGAL, and the Justice Dept is working to stop it right now.
Republicans are NOT WORKING FOR YOU. They are working to keep their 6 figure salary, free very expensive healthcare plan and pension for life plans YOU pay for – while they are working to kill your Social Security, Medicare, and the most basic programs to help the POOR. those who lost their homes to the CRIMINAL ACTS of the WALL ST BANKS.
Republicans have even tried to subvert current local elections by sending out letters telling voters the voting date has changed or giving seniors a non-existent address for their absentee ballots, and even here in my town sent out notes telling members of the Democrat Party their meeting had been cancelled.
Republicans will try every dirty tactic, illegal effort and FRAUD during teh 2012 election – so if you get something telling you something about the election, the date, the address, the place you vote has changed -CALL your COUNTY to verify because it is likely a Republican FRAUD scheme to keep people from voting.

NEVER A TRUST ANY REPUBLICAN IN THESE TIMES. THEY ARE EXTREMISTS CONTROLLED BY A SMALL GROUP OF LUNATICS. THEY ARE A DOMESTIC TERRORIST GROUP TRYING TO DESTROY OUR PRESIDENT, OUR ECONOMY, OUR JOBS JUST FOR SOME SICK POLITICAL GAME WHERE THEY THINK THEY FOOL PEOPLE INTO VOTING FOR THEM.

REPUBLICANS WORK FOR CORPORATIONS AND THE RICH – THE PRESIDENT'S JOBS PLAN IS SIMPLE, COMMON SENSE, PAID FOR, AND READY TO GO. REPUBLICANS REFUSE TO EVEN CONSIDER IT BECAUSE IT MEANS ENDING TAXPAYER MONEY GOING TO CORPORATIONS WHO NEED NOTHING AND HELPING THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHO NEED EVERYTHING.

REPUBLICAN HAVE BETRAYED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND NOT ONE SHOULD BE LET INTO ANY LOCAL, STATE, OR NATIONAL OFFICE COME 2012. THEY ARE TRAITORS TO THE MOST BASIC VALUES OF OUR NATION. THEY HAVE LIED TO YOU ABOUT EVERYTHING – PRESIDENT OBAMA, THE DEBT CEILING, MEDICARE, AND HAVE DONE NOTHING FOR YOU IN SEVERAL YEARS. THEY LIED TO YOU ABOUT JOBS. THEY LIED TO YOU ABOUT CORPORATIONS BEING "JOB CREATORS" – MAYBE OVERSEAS BUT NOT HERE. CORPORATIONS ALREADY PAY NO TAXES SO HOW COULD THE LIE ABOUT TOO MUCH CORPORATE TAX IS A COMPLETE AND RIDICULOUS LIE.
PRESIDENT OBAMA IS A GOOD AN DECENT MAN WITH REAL FAMILY AND CHRISTIAN VALUES WHO HAS NEVER STOPPED WORKING FOR WE THE PEOPLE. HE TRIED TO WORK WITH REPUBLICANS AND THEY BLACKMAILED AND HELD THE AMERICAN PEOPLE NEEDS HOSTAGE INSTEAD. THEY OBSTRUCTED ALL EFFORTS TO HELP AMERICANS. PRESIDENT OBAMA IS THE REAL LEADER, THE HONEST LEADER, AND THE ONLY ONE WHO CARES ABOUT YOUR JOB, YOUR HOME, YOUR CHILD'S EDUCATION, YOUR OPPORTUNITY TO HAVE A DECENT LIFE AND YOUR RIGHTS. BETTER PAY ATTENTION AND VOTE FOR THE DEMOCRATS OR YOU WILL BE LIVING WITH NO RIGHTS, NO JOBS, NO SS, NO MEDICARE, NO HEALTHCARE, NO HOME, AND UNDER A TOTAL CORPORATE DICTATORSHIP.
FACT CHECK REPUBLICANS – THEY ARE LIARS.

I do not care about this really. Are we going to hold you accountable for something that happened over 20 years ago? This is absurd. There are things that I did 20 years ago that are not what I would do now. In fact, I am a completely different person now.

Was it a smart thing to lease? Probably not. But I really do believe that since people are able to grow, change and have new opinions, then its dangerous to go way back and make judgments on a person based on that. I am not excusing what happened, but I am not necessarily going to impact my decision. I'll let other things such as calling Social Security a Ponzi scheme influence me much more.

You want to help the Mexicans? Why don't you do what they have ASKED the U.S. to do for YEARS: make it almost impossible to buy guns in the U.S.. ....... Oh, I forgot, the 'militia' needs guns!

I haven't sorted out my thoughts completely, but dread for our troops to be involved in any kind of action in where civilians
are in a combat zone. Vietnam, Iraq, Afghanistan has already proven what a quagmire that can be sorting out who is
the enemy. The US military are not expendable cure alls for every troubled foreign hot spot. The thought of troops being shot at by AK-47's supplied by ourselves gives me stomach pain.

What should be alarming about Perry is that he simply is just another GWBush, being a "puppet" for the "ultra conservatives" ("big money") who "pull his strings". It should be recognized that totally without any conscience he would again dedicate himself to patronizing and placating Special Interests and the powerful, influential and extremely wealthy few who strongly support him while he would again give the majority only apathy, the costs and an abundance of subterfuge to rationalize, con and manipulate. There is no hope there for the majority, especially not for the total middle-class who would continue to loose the most as they are taken for granted.

Massive chemical plant fire near Dallas

A massive fire was burning out of control Monday morning at a chemical plant in Waxahachie, located about 30 miles south of Dallas

Firefighters were on the scene at the 1600 block of state Highway 287 at the Magnablend chemical company, which manufactures custom chemicals for a variety of industries, including oil fields, agriculture, pet food and feed supplements, water treatment, construction and industrial cleaning.

Perry says slowing carbon emissions hurts economy
Texas Governor Rick Perry, struggling to regain his status as front-runner for the Republican presidential nomination, expressed fresh doubt on Saturday about whether humans are causing climate change.
"I still stand by that the science is not settled on man-made global warming," Perry said while campaigning in the key early primary state of New Hampshire.

Great example of Texas deregulation !

Being from Texas and knowing the situation, I really admire Perry for his minority-relations. I think that having funding for the education (not full) of children of illegal immigrants is really important for pulling them out of poverty and cycles of crime. It's costing us one way or another (jail or school), and they will be residents of TX no matter what.

    October 3, 2011 09:25 am at 9:25 am |

Well you're just another racist from Texas (I am a Texan too and caucasian) – assuming that Hispanics are here to rape and pillage the state. They are here to work hard, send money home (they can make 7-10x more here) and make a better life for their kids. Your cycle of crime comment is a blatant stereotype that we do not need.

As an African American diversity professional, I want Perry to clearly explain this hunting camp sign painted on the company's rock. No sugar coating. Just the facts. The media is quick to skip to his Mexico remarks because they're easier to generate feedback than the racial issue. Perry needs to come clean and explain exactly when that signage was...or was not elimanated.

Nice picture of Rick rallying the folks in the US edition to this report, but I don't see any black people. Gee, I wonder where all the black people are. Wait a minute....Is that one?? (Or is that a deeply tanned white guy or a Hispanic American supporter?)
Next week Rick will be suggesting that we invade Mexico.....oh, he already did that.

    Forget Perry Now

Let's forget about Perry now. His 15 minutes of fame is over. Let's pay attention to Herman cain who's progressing faster than any one else in the race. Is it because he's a BLACK man why he isn't given as much coverage as the other WHITE ones??????

Isn't it just right to focus on the one who's winning all the polls these days?????
