Washington (CNN) – A majority of Americans expect the Republicans to win next year's presidential election, according to a new national poll.
An ABC News/Washington Post survey indicates that 55% of the public expects the GOP to recapture the White House in the 2012 election, with 37% saying they expect President Barack Obama to win re-election.
The poll's Monday release comes as the president described himself as an "underdog" in next year's election in an interview with ABC News.
According to the survey, more than eight in ten Republicans expect their party to win back the White House, with fewer Democrats, 58%, saying Obama will win a second term. The poll indicates that a majority of independent voters expect the Republicans to win in 2012.
The ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted Thursday through Sunday with 1,000 adults nationwide questioned by telephone. The survey's overall sampling error is plus or minus four percentage points.

As much as I would like to believe this poll can see into the future, the election is over a year away and anything can happen between now and then. So for all you tolerant liberals who post your hatefull rhetoric here this poll may not represent an apocalypse....YET.

I take polling with a grain of salt, but if this is true...heaven help the ever-shrinking working class.
If people have so quickly forgotten the Bush years then so be it. If people would choose to put themselves through another 4 years of hell, then so be it. If people think things suck now, wait until the GOP is running things again. I guess that sometimes you do have to get your butt beat to remind you to not keep making foolish mistakes. People blame Obama when it is clear to a one eyed man that the Republican Congress with their pledge to make Obama a one term President, even if it costs the country everything in the process, is the problem. I hear people argue that Obama's plans aren't working. I ask, how do you know? He hasn't been able to really get anything passed other than the healthcare overhaul and even that was watered down. They played with the debt ceiling, now they are holding up passing the jobs bill. Why in the hell any thinking person would ever hand the wheel back over to the GOP I will never know. I guess some just like pain. In my own sick way, I hope they do win. Then they can go ahead and finish us off. Perhaps then, we as a country will see what the GOP is really about, who they serve and reveal the truth. I just hope that there will be some resemblance of America left when they are done with her.
Those numbers will change once people see who the GOP candidate is. Heck, no matter who it is half the Republicans will be declaring him or her a 'traitor" for one reason or another and swearing that they will work to prevent his or her election. Sadly the Party of No knows no other way these days - it's "My way" or "No way!" Against that Obama will win in a landslide. You heard it here first.

The poll isn't concerned with who SHOULD win the White House, the poll is concerned with who people think WILL win the White House. I think President Obama should get a second term, but I believe that just about any candidate with an R next to their name will be the next president.
