Axelrod: 'I'm not negative, I'm just realistic'

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama's senior campaign adviser chooses to remain practical when strategizing next year's re-election bid.

David Axelrod on Tuesday told CNN Anchor Erin Burnett that while he was very confident Obama would secure a two-term presidency in the 2012 election, he didn't expect the effort to be particularly easy.

Tomblin holds WV governorship for Democrats

(CNN) - Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin will continue serving as West Virginia’s governor after narrowly defeating Republican businessman Bill Maloney in a special election Tuesday.

With 100% of precincts reporting, Tomblin received 49.4% of the vote to 47.2% for Maloney, according to unofficial results from the West Virginia Secretary of State’s office.

Romney campaign picks up major financial backer

Washington (CNN) – Home Depot co-founder Ken Langone, one of the major donors who was pushing New Jersey Governor Chris Christie to run for president, has now signed on as a financial supporter for Mitt Romney, a Romney campaign aide and a spokesman for Langone told CNN.

Langone made his decision after Christie announced earlier Tuesday he would not seek the Republican presidential nomination.

Romney comes out swinging in Sunshine State

(CNN) – Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney opened a town hall in Florida Tuesday by hitting the incumbent president on his leadership skills-but he also didn't pull any punches from GOP rival Rick Perry.

Romney said President Obama is "too heavy" on the nation's "shoulders" and criticized the president's leadership as "weighing down free enterprise."

2012 field reacts to Christie non-starter

(CNN) - Two members of the race for the 2012 GOP presidential nomination voiced their support for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie after he chose not to enter the field Tuesday.

Though they may not miss the competition, former Utah Gov. John Huntsman's campaign and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney had kind words for Christie, who bowed out before he was in after months of mounting pressure from Republicans.

Polls: What if Christie had run

(CNN) - Chris Christie said no Tuesday to a run for the White House, but if he had launched a presidential bid, two new national polls tell different stories on where the New Jersey governor would rank in the battle for the GOP nomination.

"Now is not my time. I have a commitment to New Jersey that I simply will not abandon," Christie said at a news conference in Trenton, New Jersey that aired nationally on all major cable news networks.

Buffett challenges Murdoch on tax returns

New York (CNNMoney) – Warren Buffett has a message for Rupert Murdoch and the Wall Street Journal: Sure, I'll release my tax returns, if you do too.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal published an editorial that asked Buffett to disclose his tax returns. The piece, "Mr. Buffett's Tax Secrets," took issue with Buffet's plan to hike taxes on some of the super-rich.

Huntsman to give foreign policy address

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN) - GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman will deliver a major foreign policy address in New Hampshire next Monday, days after Mitt Romney gives his own foreign policy speech.

The former Utah governor and U.S. ambassador to China will present his vision for U.S. foreign policy in a morning speech Oct. 10 at Southern New Hampshire University.
