Hawaii Senate race says 'aloha' to Lingle

(CNN) - Former Hawaii Gov. Linda Lingle joined the race for the U.S. Senate Tuesday on the GOP side, a race that already counts former state senator John Carroll, who will face Lingle in the Republican primary, as well as Rep. Mazie Hirono, and former Rep. Ed Case, both Democrats.

The two-term former governor announced her bid on local radio in Hawaii.

White House goes Hollywood for troops

Washington (CNN) - Some of entertainment's biggest names have teamed up with the White House to film public service announcements that call on Americans to honor members of the military, their families and veterans.

According to the White House, actor Tom Hanks, director Steven Spielberg, and media mogul Oprah Winfrey each star in a separate PSA, which will air on several major network and cable channels over the coming weeks.

New figures in Sunshine State Senate battle

(CNN) - A two-term Democratic senator who could face a challenging re-election next year is reporting some big fundraising figures.

Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida will report raising just under $2 million in the third quarter of fundraising this year, according to a source close to Nelson's re-election campaign. The source also says the senator will report having around $7.5 million cash on hand for his re-election bid, and that 5,133 individuals made donations, a 54% increase in contributors over the second quarter.

Congress subpoenas 'Fast and Furious' documents

Washington (CNN) - Congressional investigators issued a subpoena Wednesday for communications from several top Justice Department officials - including Attorney General Eric Holder - relating to the discredited "Fast and Furious" federal gunrunning operation.

The subpoena, issued by the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, also covers communications from Holder's chief of staff, Gary Grindler, and Lanny Breuer, head of the department's criminal division.

Christie numbers in NJ jump since presidential decision

(CNN) - It seems New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's decision not to run for the Republican presidential nomination is paying political dividends back home in the Garden State.

Two new polls released Wednesday morning indicate that Christie's approval in New Jersey is on the rise. And according to one of the surveys, New Jersey voters back Christie's decision not to launch a White House bid by an eight to one margin.

Biden hits Cain's '9-9-9' plan

(CNN) - Herman Cain's "9-9-9" tax plan, the focal point of Tuesday night's Republican presidential debate, drew ire from Vice President Joe Biden Wednesday morning.

Biden said the proposal would unduly hurt the middle class in America.

Obama: 'I'm a fourth-quarter player'

(CNN) - President Barack Obama compared his re-election bid to a game of basketball, to make the point to Democratic supporters that he's a strong closer.

The president made his comments Tuesday night at the second of two campaign fundraisers in Florida. NBA all-star Grant Hill, hall of famer Patrick Ewing, and former all-star and current head coach Doc Rivers attended the event, which was held at a private residence near Orlando, Florida.

Romney adds more backers

(CNN) - Mitt Romney raked in more endorsements Wednesday, this time from a current senator, a former House speaker, a congresswoman and a former congresswoman.

Mississippi Sen. Thad Cochran, former House Speaker Dennis Hastert, Rep. Judy Biggert of Illinois and former Rep. Susan Molinari of New York announced their support for the Republican presidential contender in press statements.

Pawlenty says he has regrets

(CNN) - Former GOP presidential candidate Tim Pawlenty praised the gift of hindsight, saying he's realized some mistakes he made in his bid for the Oval Office.

"If we would have known then what we know now, would we have made some different decisions? Sure we would have, and I regret not making different decisions," Pawlenty said Tuesday in an interview with Minnesota Public Radio.
