(CNN) - Rick Santorum's presidential campaign reported financial numbers late Friday that reflected the former Pennsylvania senator's organization spending more money than it took in.
In the third quarter, Santorum's campaign raised $704,199, but spent more $743,757. The campaign's filing with the Federal Election Commission showed the campaign holding $189,556 in cash on hand funds.
Santorum's spokesman Hogan Gildey was upbeat, despite the discrepancy.
"It's no secret that Rick hasn't been out there fundraising much," he said in a statement. "Instead, he's been focused on meeting voters, growing the grassroots base and pushing his conservative message in the early states."
Gidley continued, "This race has never been about high-priced consultants and slick TV ads – it's about the people and getting America back on track. With every town hall, meet and greet and debate, it's clear that the people like the message and they like the messenger."
Santorum's campaign also reported more than $70,000 in debts.
The latest CNN Poll of Polls, which reflected surveys taken between October 3-10, showed 2% of Republican voters backing Santorum.

The republicans really get into unfunded programs: like unfunded wars, unfunded bank bailouts, unfunded tax cuts for the wealthy, unfunded drug programs. Big debt and spending money you don't have makes Rick a true conservative republican, but I am surprised he is concerned about only being $70,000 in debt.
I wonder why the wealthy republican campaign contributors have not been financially supporting Rick's social conservative agenda.
Time for Rick Santorum to call XSenator/Actor Fred Thompson about a Reverse Mortgage !

Nation need fiscal conservative not a social conservative
Voters couldn’t select good candidates like Tim Pawlenty and Jon Huntsman because crazy talkers like Rick Santorum' Michele Bachmann and Newt Gingrich time for them to quit
At this rate, it will take Rick about 30 years to raise as much money as President Obama raised in the past 3 months!
This fool is next to drop out of the race. He never stood a chance and can't play in the big leagues. I guess there aren't enough "conservatives" to keep his sinking boat afloat. Take your right wing hatred back to Penn.
How in God allmighty did this guy find people to give him $700,000 to promote himself for a job he will never have?
Rick seems like an "Angry White Man" There is no warm side about him. Another one is about to bite the dust – Actually, he should have bitten it a long time ago!!
Obama 2012
Google Santorum!
He's a "Frothy Mixture"!
What drives him in such an uphill battle? Determination or ego?
I just can't get past that "frothy" reference about Santorum. Not that there's anything wrong with it – I wouldn't want to judge him. hahahahahaha
I think Santorum is only in this for a VP or cabinet position.
Time for him to drop put. Although, it is beyond me why he ever thought he had a chance to begin with.
