Las Vegas (CNN) - On the surface, you wouldn't necessarily know that Las Vegas is in deep economic trouble. There are large crowds everywhere on the Strip. The restaurants are full. The casinos are jumping. The shows are great. I was at the gym at the Venetian Hotel at 6 a.m. this morning and it was packed.
But as good as parts of Las Vegas look on the outside, there are deep problems when you take a closer look. Nevada has the highest unemployment and home foreclosure rates in the country – with no quick end in sight.
Programming note: GOP presidential candidates next face off at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday, October 18, in the CNN Western Republican Presidential Debate in Las Vegas, Nevada. Submit your questions for the debate here.

"At tonight’s debate, what happens in Vegas won’t stay in Vegas"
Indeed. It's hard to claim that it all stayed in Vegas if you go there and come home with the clap. Similarly, the GOP's umpteenth MSM-endorsed-and-promoted presidential campaign infomercial will give the public discourse the equivalent of a venereal disease.
Paying for unfunded republican wars, unfunded bailouts for Wall Street and big banks, and tax cuts for the wealthiest of Americans, has taken a huge toll on the middle class. They can no longer schedule their gambling get aways to Vegas.
Stop asking the pizza man and start asking the only doctor running about real solutions to our medical industry.
"republican wars"
Obama, the noble peace prize winner, has involved us in two wars so far. And he broke his promise to bring our troops home from the "republican wars". Vote for peace, vote Ron Paul.
"All of those complaining about the 47% that pay no federal income tax please don't forget they pay State and Local taxes as well as Social Security."
Here's the 47% that doesn't pay federal income tax for you:
Virtually 100% of that 47% pays sales tax and property tax and excise tax.
70% of that 47% pays payroll taxes.
17% of that 47% are on social security because they are either retired/elderly or disabled.
13% of that 47% are full-time students or otherwise legitimately not paying federal income taxes.
There you have it: the working poor, the elderly, the disabled, the youth...it's no wonder why the GOP/Teatrolls hate them.
Nevada has taken a hit below the financial belt when it comes to federal dollars. It is home to Sen. Majority Leader Harry Reid. Republicans would love to get him voted out of office.
"I would dare say they pay a larger percentage of their income in taxes than most "rich" people do."
That's because almost every single form of taxation in this country EXCEPT income tax is actually REGRESSIVE, i.e., it places a greater burden on individuals the less wealthy they are (an inverse relationship), especially flat taxes like sales tax, excise and property taxes, etc.
Will only 7 republicans get their free campaign advertising, or will Huntsman show up? All in all, this is free air time for the clueless candidates.
What do they feel about the fact that the workers who put down the very same chairs they are all sitting on were put there by lower class people getting minimum wage pay?
I know because I am one of them.
"Vegas is in deep economic trouble"
Let's see, you have a huge city in the middle of the desert, depending on people to come there just to throw away their money. NOT a stable business plan.
And don't forget that the city would not exist (along with Phoenix and others) without the Federal Government supplying them with water for drinking, bathing, landscaping (golf courses), and also cheap electricity.
So as the tea-baggin repugs talk about cutting the size of government, remember, Vegas, you owe your existence to the taxpayers of the USA.
We want GOP candidates to stay in Vegas till November 2012
Ron Paul is in the top 3 but gets least speaking time.. why?
"At tonights debate, what happens if Vegas won't stay in Vegas."
Might just as well stay in Vegas for all the impact it'll have on America.
Well since no one responded to my post, I guess all the Democrats are happy with huge debts, high unemployment and a wiff of socialism. Personally I do not want to pay more taxes for a race that has been on welfare since the early 1960's. That may not be "PC" but IT IS THE TRUTH.
Where is RON PAUL mentioned in this Article!!! STOP CENSORING RON PAUL!!!!!!!!
It's time Mr. Cain answer the important questions of the day.
Is Mr.Cain a U.S. citizen
Was he born in the U.S.?
Where is his Birth Certificate?
Is he a secret Muslin?
Is it true he was raised in Pakistan?
Does he understand U.S. Values?
One thing for certain that we will not see is any of the candidates telling the truth. Honestly, CNN, why doesn't the media call these clowns out when they lie?
Will Cain be asked what connection does he have to the Koch brothers?
Pastor Russ, that is one huge pile of stupid you posted. First, the GOBP neocon deathcult has been the most responsible for our deficit. Second, that same deathcult refuses to compromise on efforts to improve the employment situation, other than to parrot their favorite cult talking points about deregulation and tax cuts for the ultra-rich, both of which are proven failures. Finally, your racist comment also showed your ignorance. Far more whites are on welfare than African Americans. Go back to posting with your racist buddies on the Fakes News comment sections.
