Gingrich compares Romney, Perry to 'kids,' plays up econ. ideas

Davenport, Iowa (CNN) - On Monday, the only history professor running for president offered stern lectures on economic policy, against President Obama - and even attempted to school Mitt Romney and Rick Perry.

"I literally felt like, the other night, I was the recess monitor on the playground, watching these two kids," Newt Gingrich said at a town hall in Davenport, Iowa. The former House speaker was referencing the bitter back-and-forth between the former Massachusetts governor and current Texas governor at last week's Republican presidential debate in Las Vegas, sponsored by CNN and the Western Republican Leadership Conference.

(CNN) - Michele Bachmann’s national spokesman downplayed claims Monday that the Minnesota congresswoman’s New Hampshire staff had been mistreated by the campaign’s senior-level team.

“That's unfortunate. They want to call names, that's their prerogative. We wish them the best,” Alice Stewart said on CNN’s “John King U.S.A.”

Who benefits from the accelerated calendar?

Washington (CNN) - With the battle between Nevada and New Hampshire over primary and caucus dates apparently settled, and the calendar nearly set in stone, the question is which GOP presidential candidate or candidates benefit from the accelerated start of voting.

New Hampshire Secretary of State Bill Gardner could announce as early as this week the date of the Granite State's 'first in the nation' primary. Gardner's expected to hold his state's contest on January 10, now that Nevada Republicans announced on Saturday that they would push back the date of their caucuses to February 4.

Democrats consider new immigration reform push

Washington (CNN) – Democratic sources tell CNN that it's likely that Democrats on Capitol Hill –with the approval of the White House– will re-introduce some form of immigration reform, possibly as early as December. At this point, the details of any plan are unclear. But what is clear is that Democrats are interested in using their version of reform as a "contrast issue" to Republicans, who largely emphasize border security.

Sources say there are ongoing discussions among Democrats ranging from re-introducing comprehensive reform to bringing up the Dream Act again, which would allow the children of illegal immigrants who go to college or serve in the military to become citizens. The Dream Act was defeated last year.

Texas Rep. Ron Paul drops a bomb
