BLITZER'S BLOG: Perry proposing major Social Security changes

(CNN) – You have to give Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry at least some credit for putting major changes in Social Security on the table. Most politicians don't even want to touch this subject, especially because older Americans love their Social Security benefits, and older Americans vote in much higher percentages than younger Americans.

Perry is proposing very significant changes. For example, he wants to raise the retirement eligibility age.

Obama in Colorado pushing student loan relief

(CNN) – President Barack Obama took his economic relief plan on the road to Colorado Wednesday, highlighting new measures designed to help college graduates manage student loan debt.

One of the president's measures will push up the start date for more favorable terms on a special loan repayment program based on income. Another measure is designed to encourage graduates with two or more kinds of federal loans to consolidate them and get a small break on interest rates.

Debt committee's failure would trigger deep cuts

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - The automatic cuts looming over the congressional debt committee would take a big bite out of discretionary spending, a top government budget expert said Wednesday.

And those reductions would be felt across the economy - potentially affecting infrastructure projects, higher education, basic research, and state and local governments, Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf explained to members of the so-called super committee.

Romney takes sides in Ohio union fight

(CNN) – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Wednesday expressed his support for a referendum that would curb collective bargaining rights for public employees in Ohio, after he avoided directly weighing in on the battle Tuesday.

"I support question two and Gov. Kasich's effort to restrict collective bargaining in Ohio in the ways he's described," Romney said at an event in Virginia Wednesday. "So I fully support that."

Poll: Obama advantage in crucial battleground state?

(CNN) - A new poll suggests President Barack Obama has the advantage right now over three of his possible GOP opponents in next year's election in an important battleground state.

According to a Quinnipiac University poll of Ohio voters, Obama holds a four point margin over former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in a hypothetical 2012 general election matchup. The president's 45% to 41% margin over Romney is within the survey's sampling error. The poll indicates that Obama holds a 47% to 39% advantage over businessman and former Godfather's Pizza CEO Herman Cain and has a 47% to 36% lead over Texas Gov. Rick Perry.

Obama talks politics, life with Leno

LOS ANGELES (CNN) - President Barack Obama addressed a broad range of political topics during an appearance on NBC's "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" Tuesday, insisting among other things that he's not spending too much time yet focused on next year's potential GOP campaign rivals.

"I'm going to wait until everybody's voted off the island," Obama joked. "Once they narrow it down to one or two (candidates), I'll start paying attention."
