Ron Paul wins both tallies at GOP straw poll in Iowa

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - Ron Paul has won two separate tallies for the National Federation of Republican Assemblies Presidential Straw Poll.

Paul won both the Iowa-voters-only count at the Saturday convention in Des Moines as well as a tally of non-Iowans who participated.

In the Iowa voters result, Paul took 82%. Following him were Herman Cain with 14.7%, Rick Santorum with 1%, Newt Gingrich with 0.9%, Michele Bachmann with 0.5%, Rick Perry with 0.5%, Gary Johnson with 0.2%, with Mitt Romney and Jon Huntsman 0%.

The total number of votes cast in that tally was 430.

In the tally of non-Iowans who voted, Paul won 26% followed by Cain at 25%, Perry and Santorum tied at 16%, Gingrich at 11%, Bachmann at 6%, Romney at 1%, and Huntsman and Johnson with 0%.

The total number of votes cast in that count was 101.

Though Paul won both tallies, the NFRA has not yet officially endorsed a candidate. Delegates to the convention will decide that later Saturday.

I wonder if these results are trying to tell us something about Iowa voters or if the Repubs will just discredit it as a fraud polling...

Let's see if the nightly news sweeps this one under the rug too. Sooner or later they will have no choice but to mention Dr. Paul as a heavy weight GOP contender. Once that happens some of the American sheeple may actually understand his message of limited government, personal liberty, lower taxation, monetary policy and military spending.

I would never vote for Ron Paul, but he is the most consistent and by far, the least hypocritical of all of the comedic bunch of Republican candidates. When he states that he doesn't want Government controlling our lives, at least he means it in every aspect of our lives, not like the rest who want limited Government, but still want them to regulate our own values, by forcing their own Christian principles down our throats (and I am a Christian, but by choice), by actually increasing the role of Government in legislating morality. For that I do respect him, and for that, he will never win the Republican nomination.

“Republicans Could Nominate Ron Paul and Win”

Writes Chris Cillizza at The Washington Post:

One thing that could work against Romney, however, is the mounting evidence of Obama’s political vulnerability heading into 2012.

“Electability is really beatability this year,” Republican pollster John McLaughlin said. “They all want to beat Barack Obama in the election, and right now they think all their major candidates can do that.”

Mark McKinnon, who made ads for Bush’s presidential bids, put it even more succinctly: “If the economy stays the same or gets worse, Republicans could nominate Ron Paul and win.”

Thank you Iowa. Personally I believe there should be a one day national primary. All citizens of the United States should be given the opportunity to choose AMONGST the candidates rather than BETWEEN the candidates that have been selected by the media and early primary states. The current system perpetuates the two party system and limits the real choices to those who are supported by lobbyists and those with political influence.. The straw polls in Iowa give me hope that, finally, we the sheeple have found a voice.

But it's hard if someone wins with 82%, isn't it? Especially if a Cain wins with 20% in a previous poll and the entire US must know about it.

Believe it or not.... we did not get bussed in to the event ! i was up at 5am this morning and made the drive from Sioux City, Iowa ... which was not that bad, ... it gave us some time to ponder thoughts like why is it possible for anyone to consider any other candidate in this race,.. we quickly came the conclusion that the main stream media does not want a candidate to solve the problems because then they would not have anything to complain about on their "news" broadcasts.... its job security for them !

All 10 of my voting age family members will vote only for Ron Paul in the 2012 elections, but we couldn't be there this weekend to cast our votes. Ron Paul doesn't have to bus people in; just as he doesn't have to run money bombs. The grassroot supporters do these things. This is one big reason for the success of the Ron Pauo republicans (and "blue republicans," too). They say it took 16 years for the Goldwater revolution to culminate in the election of Ronald Reagan. With the internet and all, it seems that the time frame has sped up.The "next generation" and the remnant of true small-government republicans (from back when republicans were elected to end wars) see in Ron Paul someone who walks the talk of that old guard. They see his fight as their own.

RJWTimes, no thanks for contributing your ignorant comment, "obsessed with the deficit", the economy is probably the number one priority on all the candidates this election cycle and if anyone knows, or cares about it, he is the chairman of United States House Financial Services Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology. It is evident that RP is the only candidate that is supported by real Americans. All other candidates get support from corporations and special interest groups. RP has the most individual donations from military personnel than all candidates combined. His ideas of liberty and peace resonate with our troops. His foreign policy is what America should stand for, a beacon to freedom and peace!

You guys really do get excited about these straw polls that you can flood. Why don't we concentrate on real polls. How about the average of all the polls: Real Clear Politics. Look it up:http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/2012/president/us/republican_presidential_nomination-1452.html

Note that only 5 candidates have broken above 10% in the last year in that chart: Cain, Gingrich, Bachmann, Perry, and Romney.

Three candidates have never broken above the 10% mark:
    Ron Paul, Huntsman, and Santorum

Why did 400 to 500 voters show up only to" NOT CAST A VOTE FOR ANYONE. After all it is a Straw Poll, you go there to VOTE. "Had the missing votes gone to Ron Paul the 82% is now in the high 90's And that is a real "LANDSLIDE" for Paul. But where are the missing 400-500 votes ? Something smells here in Iowa like BULL. Anyone got a count of the tickets sold?? Also it was when they said Newt was next on a recorded tape is when everyone took off. It was a good day for Ron Paul in Iowa. Those who support Ron Paul haven't really taken an objective look at what he thinks would make a better country. He feels you can abolish regulation and the market will regulate itself. WRONG! That might have worked when Paul was growing up and companies were run by their founders to hand picked successors, many of who were immediate family members. These people had a history with the company and their family name and history were at stake when it came to quality, safety and honesty. That's no longer the situation. The CEO's of most Fortune 500 companies are hired guns who have no prior association with the company before their hire. As we have seen, they will not think twice of "jackpotting" the company, actually using the companies good reputation to rob it blind. Think Enron. As a retired airline pilot, should Paul become POTUS, I plan on going into the scrap metal business. I'll just buy property near major airports and wait for the planes to drop on them.

I do like Ron Paul, and the passion among his supporters. But let's not kid ourselves here with these straw polls. Paul's supporters throng by the bus (which is awesome), and go from state to state to vote. But that's a VERY SMALL segment of the overall population that is HIGHLY motivated.
I will bet a large cup of coffee that Paul will not even get 5% in the GOP primaries (overall). It is sad, but just real facts.

I will however concede the media bias against Paul (especially Fox news). There is NO reason to marginalize or ignore a truly iconic figure in US politics (I disagree with him a LOT but have utmost respect for his unwavering opinions)

IF Herman Cain would've won this straw poll, it would be EVERYWHERE. And those saying Ron Paul just bused in voters...so does all the rest of the candidates. This just shows how completely out of touch the Iowa Republicans are with not only the rest of the Republican Party but also the rest of the nation. Why do we let Iowa get the first nominating event every four years? They are not representative of the rest of the party.

    404. 101. Hardly large sample sizes. It is sad how little press Huntsman gets. He is a true republican, a GOP of the 80s and 90s when people worked together. He is too conservative for my taste, but I am liberal and he is moderate. Romney flips too much. Ron Paul is an interesting character. At least it wasn't Cain or Perry who won. Still, this poll means very little in the scheme of things. The sample is both small and skewed.

Ron Paul supporters are such dopes. The guy buses people in from everywhere to win these meaningless straw polls, and his supporters flood the message boards to proclaim him 'the real deal' and 'the next President' and other such nonsense. Truth is, the guy has never won a caucus or a primary; he's never even come close to winning one. He's not going to win one in 2012, either. He's a cartoon character, not a real candidate. While straw polls mean very little, it's always the choice of the media to either promote the results and project a candidate into the mainstream (as they did with Cain), or minimize the results and sweep it under the rug (as they do with Paul).

Fortunately, the main stream media is going the way of the dodo, and other people will step up and report the truth.

This will make a nice blog subject for next week.

Once again the Paulbots bus in a ton of supporters to skew the results. I saw this personally at CPAC and even work with an individual that states that is what their intentions are. He is a big Paul supporter and has participated in numerous bus ins. As much as Obama is killing our economy, I would take him any day over Ron Paul. Has anyone really given any thought to some of things Ron Paul is proposing? If this was maybe 100 years ago, then ok, yeah some of his ideas would fit but not today. They are grand and appealing but not realistic. He is nice, but he is removed from reality in terms of how the government works not only domestically but also on the international level.

Lets see, the straw polls that are tallied in public veiw are considered null and void but the ones done behind closed doors are the ones that count. I see a trend here, anyone else besides me smell something fishy? We need to demand paper record of our votes because I feel there will be voter fraud going on this primary. @ RJWTimes, Bradford, England: You eloquently state, "Ron Paul should draw his campaign to a close. Dennis Kusinich, dream on, anyway he is obsessed with the deficit and should quit now as he is boring everyone."

Clearly Ron Paul is boring you and apparently so is Dennis Kucinich. The topic of US debt must also be a big yawner for you. Whatever you have could be profitably bottled and sold to the rest of us who are losing sleep over the portent of the fragmenting Eurozone and the concern that similar insolvency and civil unrest will visit our shore near-term. Don't forget that Ron Paul accurately called the housing crisis several years beforehand. Perhaps we shouldn't be so dismissive.

I was there and there was nothing shady. You could see he was going to win big time almost everyone there had a Ron Paul shirts or buttons on, it was domination. He had people on their feet 4 times, it was a great speech. To the Obama lover that commented no one expects him to win a state by 84% that's a crazy impossible number. But win the nomination he will. Once again Obama fan you can rest easy, me and the 7 friends I went with drove together (carpooling, Al Gore would be proud...lol. What this article neglects to mention is that MSNBC reports that Paul's campaign purchased a large number of tickets for the straw poll and distributed them to supporters for $10, half off the price. Cain's campaign reportedly also purchased a large number of tickets and was selling them for $20 but had difficulty distributing all of them.

This was a "pay to vote" poll and Paul "subsidized" the voters.... not very Libertarian if you ask me!

Watched CNN all day and there was no mention of Ron Paul winning BOTH straw polls. It is completely ridiculous that they continuously focus on Cain and Romney. Go RON PAUL!!!

President Paul's supporters are increasing every single day. The more and more Americans are educated about what happens if we continue to vote in candidates backed by special interests who are selling short on America the more and more support begins to swell for the logical choice Ron Paul 2012.

As a recent Ron Paul convert, I have to say I'm impressed. I was once a follower of the MSM until I saw a youtube video of Ron Paul predicting the housing bubble back in 2003. Then I realized how mind controlling the MSM really is. Time will tell, but I pray others like myself will realize that Ron Paul is the candidate we have been looking for.

You likely won't win, Ron Paul, but I'm incredibly glad you exist. Your stances on personal freedoms, your stances on america's place in the world, your views on the umpteen wars this country is waging, your pristine voting record.... All of these things I admire and agree with. We need a few hundred more people like you in washington. It's just your economics that scare the hell out of me. I don't even really disagree, It'd be a grand experiment... But us humans only live so long. I don't want to give up most of a decade of my life, of my kid's lives, on a "let them duke it out and may the most exploitative win" economic policy. Because they will win, the way power and money currently work. Money buys power, and enough power buys more money. Average americans just don't have enough money/power to matter. Even as president you couldn't do a damned thing about it.

Remember when Herman Cain won the Florida straw poll? It was headline prime time news and launched his campaign in to the stratosphere. I fully expect the "Fair and Balanced" corporate news media to do the same with this win for Paul.

What the article doesn't mention is that it cost $20 to get into the event and Ron Paul bought lots of tickets and "sold" them to his supporters for half-price... subsidizing their entrance and buying their votes. Hermain Cain also bought tickets for his supporters in advance but asked them to pay the full price (cheapskate) and it's been reported that he ended up holding a whole bunch. Either way this poll is a farce.

Ron Paul is a straight forward candidate that does not flip flop and I quite enjoy it when he speaks, and when given the chance to speak he kicks butt in all of the debates. There is a huge difference between him and Flip Romney and Rick Perry who are just obsessed with becoming President for the power, Ron Paul actually has solid ideals and wants to help the country. Ron Paul is unique and his own man and Perry and Romney answer to a big machine and look for the popular answers to any questions, Ron Paul just answers with honesty

This guy Ron Paul is an idiot wanting to put us into some sort of 1700's fantasy world. He has no understanding of economics and a pitiful understanding of history. The fact that he is even being considered for any nationally elected office is a disgraceful reflection of the degradation of our educational system.

Great news! First, Donald Trump quits, Then, Sarah Palin decides not to run. With Bachmann and Perry sinking fast, the GOP Primaries were in danger of becoming a standard political event, rather than the freak show we've been enjoying. With Ron Paul's big win, the entertainment value of GOP politics remains high.

    RJWTimes, Bradford, England, Said:

"Ron Paul should draw his campaign to a close. Dennis Kusinich, dream on, anyway he is obsessed with the deficit and should quit now as he is boring everyone."

Hmmm not sure why someone from England should even care, but why should we be obsessed with that pesky debt? Maybe because it's driving our way of life into the ground, or through the use of fiat currency, debasing the dollar.

Nah – we should care more about who has the nicest hair, or who looks 'presidential'....Not me, not this time.

That's incredible! Not that RP won the Straw Poll (because he's done extremely well in many of them now), but that CNN decided to even mention it!

I've said it before..Ron Paul is the only Republican candidate I'd consider. Otherwise, I'm going with Obama again.
