(CNN) - Herman Cain, the latest Republican presidential frontrunner, clarified his stance on abortion Sunday by saying he opposes any abortion after conception, with no exceptions.
Cain, the former pizza executive, distanced himself from a previous comment that abortion in cases of rape and incest should be up to the family.
"I am pro-life from conception, period," Cain said Sunday on the CBS program "Face the Nation."
Last week, Cain said on CNN's "Piers Morgan Tonight" that that he was against abortion rights, but when asked about rape or incest, Cain said the government shouldn't have a say on those issues and the decision should be left to the family.
Some social conservatives slammed Cain for his remarks in the following days, prompting him to be vocal about his "pro-life" stance in subsequent campaign appearances and interviews.
Also Sunday, Cain responded to prodding by "Face the Nation" host Bob Schieffer to publicly declare his opposition to smoking in the aftermath of a novel campaign ad in which Cain's chief of staff takes a drag on a cigarette and blows smoke at the screen.
"Young people of America, all people, do not smoke," Cain said to the camera after Schieffer, a former smoker and cancer survivor who acknowledged he was editorializing, admonished the ad as possibly giving a pro-smoking message. "It is hazardous and it's dangerous to your health. Don't smoke. I've never smoked and I have encouraged people not to smoke."
To further prompting from Schieffer, Cain added: "It is not a cool thing to do."
You all talk about the choice of murdering a child in the womb like it is a choice whether to go to Disney World or Universal Studios. "Pro-lifers" do not advocate big government, they argue that abortion is murder, and I do not see any of you on your hypocritical pulpits arguing against the anti-murder laws.
what a joke ... God save this country from itself!
Brian, if that's what he meant that's what he needs to say. No one & no organization especially the government has the right to force a woman who has been raped to carry a baby from that rape to term & have the baby. In addition, in otherwords, according to pro-lifers, the woman's life is at risk if she continues the pregnancy but she can't have an abortion. Therefore, it's ok for the woman to die so that the baby can live? No one & no organization especially the government has the right to make that choice for that woman.
Next, Cain's re-clarification of his re-clarification; Romney must be so proud of his protégé...
I,m a bit confused. The GOP says smaller gov, less regulation but keeps wanting to create and introduce legislation to limit peoples freedom of choice, especially woman.
Hello guys here's a nice one ( not ) for you to those that promote from conception to whatever to consider. There are other equally naseous variations. You are a staunch Republican your wife (my wife)plus two kids (saved hard to ensure they can go to college 14 and 16 respectively) gets raped by some stupid drug filled zombie whose got syphllis and after we fix all that the doc says its 90 % sure your wife will die giving birth.
I tell you what we would both do. Get the abortion. The multiple reasons why are obvious. Ban it in US and we'll pay for it elsewhere as the economics of me having a moral obligation to take care of a child not mine dont make sense, let alone anything else. I do not personally agree with Roe vs Wade ( the case should never have been brought ) but it is the law of the land and any politician who states what Cain, Romney, Bachman do on this topic no longer get my vote even though normally its only a 5% influence factor on how I vote.
The reason bringing religion into politics, and one which clearly does not have the 60% mandate in polls and certainly not that 2/3rds majority needed to overturn effectively Roe vs Wade. in the house and Senate
At the end of the day it is a nonsense discussion and pure pandering in the belief it gets someones vote. For those voters giving it for that reason I feel sorry you have been duped.
It is also the worst example of big government I can think of.
If you get Raped you MUST have that baby and raise it as your own! CAIN knows what's best for YOU!
Herman Cain: "Ok let me reclarify my position. I am NOT going to win the Presidency, leave along get nominated"
More like flip flopping.
y is it that a man has 2 make the decision 4/if a woman can have an abortion? who made them the chief decider?
When a pregnant woman visits a 'planned parent hood' (oxymoron- fathers really cannot stop an abortion) clinic, what are the possibilities of her leaving with a living baby? They speak of 'women's health'- oxymoron with the number of female babies that are aborted (killed) at these clinics. The most dangerous place for a unborn child is at an abortion clinic! There is nearly a hundred percent chance it will be killed there. Nazis death doctors will have been quite at home in abortion clinics. Doctors in abortion clinics kill unborn babies. How does the killing of her helpless unborn child gave a woman right over her body against a hypothetical man whom it is said wants to control her? Say what you want about abortion, the fact is; abortion kills unborn babies.
Tsk, tsk Hermie. You're not staying on message (again). Does anyone else get the impression that the minute he gets off camera he's getting a phone call telling him that he needs to clarify his far-right wing stance?
It's like he doesn't even know what he's supposed to think. Herman Cain...The Clarifier.
What a loser. Does he think the American people are stupid?
I'm 42, gay, premenopausal, in a long-term relationship. Chances of getting pregnant next to nonexistent, yet I'm thinking of having my tubes tied because idiots like Cain might just get elected and I want to make sure, absolutely SURE, that I don't bring any children into their world.
And here I thought the Tea Party was about economic issues ...so what in theee fawkes are they doing touching social issues. Me thinks they flip-flop on their totally incoherent position.
Cain, you can't make everyone Catholic. Abortion laws aren't going to change so presidential candidates shouldn't even comment on it. First of all, it's none of your business. Secondly, if it's religious reasons for being anti, just remember an unborn "baby" will go straight to Heaven and avoid the chance of corruption, right? Unless your god has cursed them to Hell before they're born anyway -if that's the case, you really need to rethink your religion and god.
"...abortion in cases of rape and incest should be up to the family."
So he's Pro Choice, but is still trying to finesse his way through the Social Conservatives.
How can you be Pro-Life and stand by a Party that brought on a war that killed hundreds of thousands and not speak up?
