Pro-Perry group blankets Iowa and South Carolina with new ads

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) – A pro-Rick Perry group is unleashing an ad campaign this week in Iowa and South Carolina on behalf of the Republican presidential candidate.

The Super PAC Make Us Great Again is spending a combined $382,000 over 10 days in the two early nominating states, where the Texas governor needs to gain traction to clinch the GOP nomination.

U.S. sues South Carolina over immigration law

(CNN) – Justice Department officials pressed their campaign against an immigration law in South Carolina on Monday, saying the measure passed there this summer unconstitutionally pre-empts federal authority.

South Carolina's law also could lead to the harassment and detention of authorized visitors, immigrants and citizens, federal officials argue in court documents.

Perry's flat tax plan: The rich make out

New York (CNNMoney) - No matter how you slice it, the richest Americans would do better under Rick Perry's tax proposals, but the picture is more of a mixed bag for those on the lower rungs, according to an analysis released Monday by a nonpartisan tax research group.

More than 95% of the highest-income households would pay a lower tax bill under Perry's optional flat-tax system.

Obama gets clean bill of health

(CNN) - President Obama is “fit for duty,” his doctor concludes in a medical report released Monday by the White House.

According to the report by Dr. Jeffrey C. Kuhlman, the president was found to have normal blood pressure and cholesterol levels. He also tested negative in colorectal and prostate screening exams while his vision is 20/20.

Activists propose 'shutting down' candidate offices during Iowa caucuses

Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) – Occupy Wall Street activists plan to amass in Iowa one week before the Iowa caucuses - up to the day they're held on Jan. 3, CNN has learned.

The plan has been dubbed the "First in the Nation Caucus Occupation" - a play on words for the first-in-the-nation presidential contest. The idea is to have activists from across the nation, and possibly beyond, descend on Iowa.

Cain breaks out in song

(CNN) - During his much-watched appearance at the National Press Club Monday, presidential candidate Herman Cain concluded his speech with a rare performance of singing a gospel song.

The former Godfather's Pizza executive - also a Baptist minister who was featured in a gospel album earlier this year - said he wanted to express the importance of faith in his personal life. Cain fielded questions all morning over sexual harassment allegations, which he called falsely made and baseless.

Second clean energy loan company files for bankruptcy

(CNN) - A second clean energy company that received a loan guarantee from the Department of Energy has filed for bankruptcy. According to their website, Beacon Power received $43 million loan guarantee from the Department of Energy. The company was working on a new technology that would allow the nation’s electricity grid to store energy by constructing what, on the company’s website, they call “a state of the art energy storage facility in Stephentown, New York.”

The company also received $26 million in stimulus grants from the Department of Energy.
