Obama budget aide doesn't see shutdown

Washington (CNNMoney) - White House budget director Jacob Lew said Thursday he's optimistic that Congress will avoid any more threats of federal shutdowns later this month over a 2012 budget.

"After living through April and July, any reasonable person would have to say there's risk" of a shutdown crisis, said Lew, director of the White House Office of Management and Budget in a forum sponsored by Politico. "(But) I generally don't believe that Congress wants to be in that kind of a showdown. I'm optimistic they'll work through these issues and make the right choice."

I wonder if the neo-cons realize that the White House has just put the ball on the tee for them to hit, took a step back and said, "Go ahead. Take your best shot." The Republicans "best shot" would be to paint a less optimistic picture for the FY2012 budget.

But doing so would be shooting themselves in the foot. If the Republicans relight their ideological holy candles and gives us a repeat performance of this year's high stakes stand-offs, then they will be a sure bet to be voted right out of Washington.

    I don't think so.

This administration has wanted a blank check from the git-go, and I don't think Congress is going to continue to tolerate the lack of a budget, and fiscal responsibility.

There will be no end to this problem right now because the Democrats have no intention of cutting government spending to the government dependence class they have created in this country. The schemes they have created using the tax code to redistribute the wealth are simply unsustainable. This country needs to get its financial situation in order and STOP the insane spending levels. That is why Democrats were thrown out in record numbers in 2010. If they insist on continuing the spending madness, then many more will be thrown out in 2012.

Obama's budget got rejected by a 99-0 vote in the senate. The white house shouldn't talk.

What in the real world are you talking about? First, all budget and spending legislation must originate in the Republican controlled House. Second, a real FY2012 budget cannot be written until the super-Committee makes it official that the automatic cuts will be kicking in. Thirdly, the American people anxiously look forward (with gritted teeth) to yet another year of fiscally irresponsible, Republican brinksmanship, further damaging our economy.

Wait a second. If his budget was rejected 99-0 (it included too many cuts in entitlements for Democrats, and it included elimination of tax loopholes which Republicans rejected) , then why is it every neo-con in the country has been admonishing the Obama administration for never having submitted a budget proposal. Case in point, Rick's reply above.

Mr. Lew you aren't dealing with a REAL congress right now. This TP trash will do ANYTHING to hurt and destroy our president. With the OWS movement getting so much attention – they are being seen for what they are and it is not good. I think they will go just as far as they did this summer only this time I hope the American people rise up and throw them all out on the streets where they belong. I personally wish they would all go live in another country made up of TP trash, TP schools, TP government, TP stores, TP trailers, etc. I for one would donate to their exit. Good riddance.

The Dems had control of Congress and the WH for two years and DID NOT pass a budget. We have been without a budget for 900 days. Harry Reid is sitting on at least 15 different jobs bills, including Obama's, and is not letting the Senate vote on them. It's not the Republicans causing Obama problems. It's his own party!!

In a town where everybody NEVER agrees on something, they ALL AGREED Obama's budget proposal was a joke, just like him. Didn't it maintain or increase spending levels??? Total economic incompetence has become the hallmark of the Obama administration.

Good point. The tax code has been used to create a corporate welfare system that far exceeds entitlements. The defense contractor industrial complex is another example of conservative spending excesses. Is it truly coincidence that fighter engines have been built in Boehner's home district?

Corporations pay hundreds of billions in taxes and the people they employ even more. How much are the nearly 50% who pay ZERO income tax contributing to this country's expenses? (trick question for the libtards that flunked math)

Defending this country is actually a legit federal government duty! It figures the leftists object to defense spending. It cuts into their welfare state model I guess.

No, they don't hundreds of billions of dollars. But, you are correct about the the people paying even more. The people pay far, far more than corporations. Almost 3/4 of our revenue comes in the form of payroll taxes and income for paychecks. The rest is split 50/50 between corporate taxes and capital gains taxes.

Over a 100 corporations pay very little or no taxes on a regular basis. If you truly understood the loopholes they used to achieve this, you would be appalled. Our tax dollars are used to pay for their foreign corporate taxes. They can deduct it from their US obligations. It almost adds up to enough to balance the annual budget deficit, if the Bush Tax Cuts were repealed.

Poke fun all you want and ignore the warning. I really don't care. The conservatiev mind's cognitive dissonance in its ability to cling desperately to "the way things were" while simultaneously ignoring the lessons of history is incurable, and I understand that...though I pity it as well.

It was a symbolic vote. You know, politics. ALL spending must originate in the House. The Tea Party in the House didn't even want to read it, much less bring it to the floor for a vote. So, Sen. Reid brought it to the floor so that it could be voted on. I'm no constitutional scholar, but I suspect that since, technically speakig, it was a spending bill originating in the Senate, every Senator was compelled to vote it down.

Check out some recent articles over at CNNMONEY to see how LITTLE corporations actually pay in taxes and how they have DECREASED employees while expanding their profits

You are correct. Defending *this* country is a federal government duty. But, invading other countries and turning them into indentured resources of a privately owned plutocracy is not a duty of our government. Go ask, Dr. Paul about that.
