Cain campaign considers lawsuit

Washington (CNN) - Herman Cain's presidential campaign said it is considering filing a lawsuit against the news organization Politico, which first reported that two women who worked with him at the National Restaurant Association alleged he sexually harassed them while he headed the group.

"It is being discussed," campaign spokesman J.D. Gordon told CNN Friday. He would not discuss any details on the basis for the possible lawsuit or when a decision might be made.

Political Notebook: Listen as CNN’s Candy Crowley and Bob Costantini look at the broad picture of the ongoing Herman Cain controversy. Plus, who might and might not want to be seen with President Obama in 2012.

Cain and his campaign aides have been very critical of Politico's reporting citing the use of anonymous sources and a lack of some details about some of the claims. Cain has vehemently denied committing sexual harassment and said he recalls one settlement with a female employee as part of an employment termination agreement.

Politico stands by its reporting, saying it was extensively reviewed and it is comfortable with what it has published. "We have heard nothing from the Cain campaign. We stand comfortably behind every Politico reporters have written on the topic," executive editor Jim VandeHei said in a statement.

Separately, the Cain campaign said it did not cancel a TV interview with Mr. Cain and his wife, Gloria, on the Fox News Channel. Spokesman Gordon tells CNN there were discussions about doing an interview Friday, but it was never finalized.

Asked whether the couple will do a joint interview in the near future Gordon says: "When we have something to announce we will."

Mrs. Cain has not been seen frequently on the campaign trail. Cain earlier this week said that was because she helps keep the family calm and tranquil and that it was not her "style" to join him at every campaign stop.

On Thursday, when asked about his wife, Cain told the Sean Hannity radio show: "She is feeling for me more so. She knows it is baseless." He said the controversy is "having a toll on her."

Step up, take responsibility for your actions (you know, like you want the poor and unemployed to do), and move on. A few of us on both sides consider integrity to be kind of important and in short supply for our elected officials, you fail on this point.

They really don't like it when their dirty laundry comes out. Didn't Palin say she was suing over that book about her? Wonder what happened to that. Same thing here- he won't do a thing because he has no case.

@Shiela – uh, Shiela, Politico is a conservative site. Maybe you should check your facts before you spew your thought.

This is no different that our little Sarah. Threaten a lawsuit, then fade away because you know the truth is in there.

I think the Cain camp should be pressed to make good on their threat to sue Politico.
Can you just imagine ol' Heman sitting down to make a deposition about these events (singing)?
    That would be priceless!

If the accuser comes with a statement that Cain had no any wrong doing, it was just an assumption. Politico must face the music. These media people have been rushing to report on anything without considering the consequences. We all learn through mistakes we make. Politico should also be taught the lesson.

There is no basis for a lawsuit. And the woman who received the hush money wanted to come forward, but part of the agreement was that she could not speak publicly on the matter. Her lawyers are currently trying to find a way to let her speak. Hush money is hush money. Things aren't looking too good for you Herman, especially when your campaign was a joke to begin with.

Isn't that sweet. Mrs. Cain standing by her man. Does that mean he's innocent? No. It only means "If I don't care why should anyone else. Please! Money talks.

Do you know what the settlement payment is for? Settlement is used to sweep something under the rug, and the rug need to be unfolded right now.

Marco: "We can't accept this smear business as a norm anymore, it takes our focus away from the real issues serves only as a distraction while our economy and morals are slowly dissolving."

hahahahahaha...why do you think the Repubs. leaked it? Too much focus on little things called "issues". They have no platform except the "anti-Obama" platform...they have been obstructionists like we haven't seen in decades, offering nothing in Congress to change what's going on, just pointing the finger at our President, who, by the way, is the only one in Washington that even appears to be trying to get something done. He has had three years to try to turn around a mess that was years in the making by ol' George and his boys raiding the Treasury for thier Defense and Oil interests. UNLESS YOU ARE PART OF THE 1%, YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS VOTING GOP...they are just using you.

can you actually sue someone if the accusations made are TRUE?? Whoever is advising Herman Cain needs to do a btter job of it because the more Cain talks the worse it's going to get for him. Of course though he'll raise more money because his far right supporters have about as much sense as God gave a flea. Today's far right the dumber you appear to be the more they like you.

He is a typical 1%er BIG CORPORATE REPUBLICANT FACIST! Lets sue to keep the truth from being reported because we have the resources not to have to be treated like everyone else! Let the truth out! Release these ladies from thier agreement not to comment on the matter and be a man!

What can he possibly sue over? The women admit they made the claim. Cain admitted there was a settlement. As for lack of detail sin the reporting, that's due to the settlement Cain made with the women....they can't talk about it!!!

Smoke and is he going to handle the campaign spending issue, they are holding off until this dies down? Cain has never held office, let alone president. They call it an "Administration" for a reason. Running the Government is hard and he has no clue how to do it. He can't even manage his campaign. This Republican circus has been fun to watch, but does anyone else have a sickening feeling that one of these clowns really could be leading our Country?

Sue Politico on what grounds, for reporting what was is a fact?? This guy has blamed everybody this week, but his momma. Actually Cain is getting exactly what he deserves! He is an arrogant, slick talking man who obvious thought he was untouchable and would stay on top without being crutinized. He knew about his dirty little secret and knew it had the potential of surfacing to for him to sit and think the media is to blame, he is really nuts!
