Washington (CNN) - Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski told CNN on Tuesday she is "concerned" that the most recent charge of sexual harassment against Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain "is not an isolated incident" and that he should quit the race if there is any truth to the claims.
"I'm learning about this at the same time as any of the rest of you. But I would suggest that if, in fact, there is substance to the claims - and now there are apparently four individuals that have been involved or who have come forward - if that's the case, I think that his opportunity as a nominee are gone," the senator said.
Nearly all of the Republican senators contacted by CNN sidestepped questions about the scandal that has rocked Cain's campaign, saying they want to learn first if there is real evidence to support the mostly anonymous charges.
However, Murkowski made clear she was moved by the public account of Sharon Bialek, a single mother from Chicago who held a news conference on Monday to say Cain wanted sex in return for helping her to find a job.
"It takes incredible courage for an individual to come forward as this latest, as this one woman has," the third-term Alaskan said. "So it does cause me to wonder exactly what is out there. I am concerned."
Cain is scheduled to hold a news conference later Tuesday to address the claims.
Murkowski acknowledged that it's possible the claims against Cain are "spurious" and said it's important "that we get to the bottom of it and make a determination."
Asked if Cain should quit the race if he had done anything like this, Murkowski responded without hesitation.
"Yes," she said.
Once is a happenstance, twice is a coincidence, thrice is a habit.
After four claims how can he even still try to deny any truth in them?
It's truly great to finally see a woman with true Courage like the latest one to come forward, step out and speak up on this issue of what allegedly happened to her without fear or intimidation! More women are now coming forward since this story began. We just have to wonder how many more there will be. I hope the Tea Party is taking good note of what is going on instead of placing a blind eye on their candidate who is the darling of their political party and who they feel is above reproach!
In this polical atmosphere I must say it takes guts to call it like it is. Good job Murkowski!
Numerous allegations, hush money, avoiding the allegations even though he was warned it was coming. This isn't smoke, it's an inferno.
All the little clowns from the liberal lunatics believing this fraud woman , Gloria Alred must have had one woman left over from Tigers harem , she decided to help her Dumbocratic friends with this slob
Well if it was just one woman, you would say he is just a politician, 2 maybe he is following clinton, 3 he is acting like a religious leader but 4 he is the republican candidate for president
obama has my vote again!
Let's see. In his prepared closing statement in the first debate he quotes lyrics from the song from the Pokemon movie as being from a great poet. (it is all there on record – check it out – he quoted word for word). His 999 plan is from the Sims video game. And now he uses the "brother from another mother" line from Rush Hour 3 movie to describe his relationship with the mega billionaire Koch Brothers. Oh – and has his campaign manager smoking a cigarette as a key transistion part of his online ad. Oh wait – that's not all – and he signs a song at the end of a speech at the National Press Club. This guy is NOT a serious candidate. he is an entertainer going for money like Palin did. Oh – and I forgot – went on book selling trip to India (the country India – with very few American voters there) during the beginning of the campaign. Do we really need any more evidence than this that he is NOT a serious candidate? it is just that Republicans are desperate for anybody other than Romney – the only serious candidate they have.
..and Herman says that he has NEVER acted inappropriately.......and, he has NEVER EVEN HEARD OF SHARON BIALEK. Similar to Clarence HAVING NEVER HEARD OF ANITA HILL.
...OH, THOSE FAMILY VALUES..................OH, THOSE LIB CONSPIRACIIES.
..If there WERE a lib conspiracy, it would be to eliminate A VIABLE CANDIDATE. COME ON, HERMAN, YOU VIABLE?
...SOMEONE BETTER DIAL 9-9-9................a 20" pizza with extra cheese, pepperoni, anchovies, and green peppers!!
Why thank you, Anonymous, for providing us all with your sharp, yet balanced, analysis of the article. Your insight into the nuances of the Cain story proves once again the intellectual superiority of [R]s. Boy, how can [R]s lose when upstanding people like Anonymous are voting for them.
The amount of malignant stupidity that goes into being a [R] today is just overwhelming!!!
In Obama'a words "I'll just wait until they get voted off the island . . . A wise man indeed! Truly worthy of the presidency. Laughing at the republican candidates, a sad affair.
What?? How DARE you bring family values into the discussion! The GOP reserves the 'family values' weapon for attacking Liberals! It's not meant to be used on each other – that's why they all get a free pass on philandering, adultery, cheating, etc...
Hey mannycl: why would Wire Palladin add Bill Clinton to a list of predators, when Clinton's activity was between two CONSENTING adults?
The problem with these Teatards is that they will say anything to hear their own voice. It doesn't matter how stupid they sound, they just want to hear the sound.
Another chump bites the dust. The GOP needs to pick their most likely chump and stick with them. Let's bump up the election date and get the charade over with.
Many Republicans are probably through with Cain, but are afraid to say so until his campaign fizzles, then theyll jump on board the Murkowski truth train, too late to get respect as she did from Democrats like me.
Did Bill Clinton quit?
How long did Anthony Wiener stay in denial before he was forced out of office?
Should we continue?
It is truly impressive watching you Teabaggers try to find a way to stand up for Creepy Cain. He's done. Just another clown in an already sizable line of buffoons you've hitched your wagon to. Lol. Idiots.
Teabaggers don't believe in 'We the People', for them, it's "We Hate You People"..
More leaders like the senator from Alaska please!!!. That makes this American proud. Not afraid to make a statement that states the situation as is and what direction to follow from there. No personal judgements no nonsense just the facts. Gotta love it!
Liberals have no reason to tear down Cain at this time. But, Mr. Cain believes and insists that it is liberals who are behind this issue, not any of his colleagues running for President, or someone acting on their behalf.
If Mr. Cain really believes that, and is not just saying so appease some hypothetical base of support, then he's an idiot.
Herman Cain did this to himself. He's an ignorant black man and sorry excuse for a man. All those negative comments he made towards other people just to get votes and acceptance from those tea party racist idiots is so distasteful! What goes around comes around ten fold. Herman Cain is an absolute phony!!!
Face it, there will never be or allowed a Black conservative to run for the White Housr.
BTW – where were all these women during Cain's bid to become a Senator?
Where were they 6 months ago?
Something smells like left wing conspiracy from David Axelrod.
When will they ever learn? They have a perfectly good candidate in Mitt Romney, but no-o-o. The GOP loony fringe has to run out and hitch their wagons to the first loony like them that comes along. Never mind that he's a complete amateur and that no vetting was ever done to flush out these problems before wasting everybody's time on this non-starter. The sad thing is that the once-great GOP (though I haven't liked their politics for at least 40 years) kowtows to the lunatic fringe instead of taking care of business the right way. George Bush Sr., where are you when we need you? We need a good legitimate opposition, not this loony-bin circus.
