Santorum: Iran 'must be stopped'

New Boston, New Hampshire (CNN) - Former Sen. Rick Santorum offered a robust defense of Israel and faulted presidents Bush and Obama for their dealings with Iran in a minutely-detailed foreign-policy speech Thursday.

His comments came after a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency said Iran appeared to have continued its efforts to construct a nuclear weapon.

Santorum said the United States had an obligation to offer support - though Israel would take the lead - should the Jewish state choose to strike Iran. He said he did expect Israel to take action against Iran to protect its interests.

"A country that is developing a weapon of mass destruction to use it or destroy another country must be stopped in a pre-emptive strike," Santorum said.

He added: "I cannot imagine that any leader of the state of Israel cannot act at this point."

Iran has vowed to destroy Israel.

The speech, given to about 45 voters on a rainy night in New Boston, New Hampshire, included several lengthy divergences into Iranian and Muslim history.

Santorum emphasized his foreign policy credentials by recounting his actions in the Senate, where he sat on the Armed Services Committee.

He said he would have advocated for more strongly supporting nascent pro-democracy movements in the Middle East and toughening sanctions against Iran.

Santorum was asked by a member of the audience if he thought Americans had the appetite for more war.

"We need to stand up and fight and draw the line when our security's at stake," he said.

Carter had iran. He failed. Obama has iran. obama cannot fail on iran. The national security of america is at stake. iran having nuclear weapons must be made an impossibility. The iaea is not pro america so for it to sound such a clear, near undiplomatic alarm (the language it used were not crouched) says that we are already in a crisis. Obama, do not let history record that you were president when iran got nukes. The american people have your back and realized that you will have to take 'harsh' actions against irans nuclear capabilities. We called you 'inexperience' but you have been successful way above all expectations when it comes to foreign policy- now this iranian nuke crisis and your resolution of it will not only be your legacy but decide 'americas future security'(all that you have achieved can come to nothing). We are of different political ideologies but when you decide its time to stop iran in its nuclearization track, we all must say, 'God speed'!.
