Bachmann: Protesters were 'ignorant' and 'disrespectful'

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) – Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann on Friday described protesters who interrupted her foreign policy speech aboard the USS Yorktown the day before as "ignorant" and "disrespectful."

"They haven't been told what was done for them and that's what's a shame. And I think that as soon as they would know, if they understood the heavy price that was paid for that First Amendment right, they'd be much more respectful," Bachmann said while shaking hands at a Veterans Day parade in Columbia, South Carolina.

On Thursday, about a dozen protesters caused a stir when they stood up and delivered a coordinated message through a tactic known as a "human microphone," where one person yells out a message and the rest of the group repeats it collectively. A group called Occupy Charleston claimed on its website that it has staged the interruption.

"Blaming people that disagree with you, unpatriotic socialists… this does not help the American people," the group shouted.

The disturbance drowned out the Minnesota congresswoman's remarks, and she briefly left the stage until it was over. When she returned, she praised the group's right to protest.

"Don't you just love the First Amendment? It's great, we have a great country and I want to thank you all for your understanding," she said.

But at the parade on Friday, after a woman unrelated to the group apologized for what happened at the speech, Bachmann talked about the incident with a harsher tone than the one she took the previous day

"I was surrounded by heroes yesterday on the USS Yorktown who paid a big price for them, and they're just ignorant of that," Bachmann responded. "That's all. They're ignorant and they were disrespectful, but you know someday hopefully they'll come to know the price that was applied."

The problem with a democracy is that her constituents don't pay attention and don't realize how hypocritical she is. This woman is a menace, and yet she keeps getting reelected.....Amazing.

Thomas, what I meant was that he knows his craft: in other words, how to fashion a narrative that proves his point. I don't agree with a lot of his conclusions, but he does make people think. In his role as a politician, you see that ability to craft a narrative at work again: unfortunately for him, he's too undisciplined to pull it off.

Grover Norquist, having never won any election, got to make Congress pledge "no new taxes". And the republicans went along with it. Isn't it "treason" to put allegiance to a political party over a Congressman's allegiance to his country? Who the heck does Grover think he is?

Golden, did you ever hear about the Teabags invading Town Hall meetings and drowning out the speakers? What goes around comes around. Bachmann needs to stick to deepthroating corndogs and leave politics alone.

Sorry, Michelle, it is YOU who are ignorant and disrespectful of this country and all it stands for.

I piss on you and the Teabagger punks.

At least the OWS protesters weren't ARMED, huh?

Michele...what's the matter? Do you think the first amendment is reserved only for screaming, disrespectful teapartiers who carried placards at their rallies of President Obama as Hitler, and carried guns around with the veiled threat that they would use them? Get a clue, lady. Come back when you have one. On second thought, don't come back at all. Go help your closeted husband "pray teh evul gay away".

Actually she renounced to any respect we might have felt for her, by lying, or twisting the truth and just plainly being .
As for the ignorant charge, is the old pot against the kettle; cliche but true.

Yes Bachmann, if we didn't fight 2 decade-long wars half way around the world in third world countries then we wouldn't be able to speak our minds today. Thank you for bringing this to light for us.

Everyone knows that an invasion of American soil from Iraq and Afghanistan were imminent and once they conquered the US our free speech would have been taken away. Thank you for reminding us of this.

well I use to live in the 6th district of minnesota and moved away. now i have to listen to her whine about the occupy movement here in south carolina. While she was out there yelling and screaming as part of the tea party, I didn't recall her complaining about the noise she was making iin washington at the white house. Now she is heaing the noise and doesnt like it. A typical snob. She could always choose to stay home and be a good wife to her husband if she doesnt like protesters. What gets me is rich folks like her already have everything they want and government in their hip pocket and are still complaining.

    "Get a job Hippies

So if this was fine for folks to do, why was there a big uproar when the one Rep called obama a liar during the state of the union address a couple of years back????"

Because it's against the rules? Congressmen are NOT supposed to yell out during session.

I'm still laughing at the people calling her intelligent and gorgeous. Takes all kinds, I guess!
Personally, I think she's either a robot or a human/alien hybrid. It would explain the cold, dead eyes and her inability to speak unless it involves talking points. I also find her reactions to things to be quite odd. It's one thing to be "cool" in a calamity...her reactions are just...odd.

They may have been disrespectful - but this woman does not demonstrate that she is respectful of people who differ from her. One certainly cannot respect her intellect.

The people who do try to break up ceremonies and town meetings are not helping the situation. We have a Constitution gives individuals the right the free speech but that right does not include shouting so loudly that others cannot hear what is being said.

How about the protesters who accused candidate Obama of various infractions including questioning his patriotism. They continue to do so even after the election.

The TEA Party yelled and screamed during town meetings with members of Congress and did not allow people to speak. They have shouted down others at different public meetings and are just as rude as those who shouted down Ms. Bachmann. You cannot agree with one group and then call out the other group.

The truth is we should all be respectful.

I thought what they did was added some substance to her to a boring speech she was about to give. Oh yea, it was hilarious the way she looked puzzled and didn't know if she should give her speech or leave. PRICELESS!

For those who think Bachman is great, there is still a movie on youtube showing her when she was a Minnesota legislator, hiding in the bushes while snooping a gay rights rally in front of the state capitol.

She and her husband do not support rights for anyone they disagree with.

Well, they are ignorant and disrespectful. That doesn't mean they don't have the First Amendment right to be so, but their supporters don't seem to like it when other people exercise *their* right to call them on it.

Interesting how the first casualty of communists – well, after their opponents, which are typically killed or sent to "re-education camps" – is the right to free speech, along with the right to possess weapons. That tells you all you really need to know about "progressives" – who are, in fact, nothing of the sort.

She gets historical facts wrong almost every time she opens her mouth and she thinks that the protesters are being disrespectful to those that built theis country. Open a history book and learn the facts for yourself Bachmann instead of claiming that you are just repeating what you're told. Spending 11 million in 2010 to keep your seat in the house to win by such a small margin is just sad. Just do yourself a favor and stop.

Well I would never do that to a speaker but after reflecting about my feelings for her I would have joined in. I would for all the GOP and I am one of them. Need some new contestants to the mix.
