Bachmann: Protesters were 'ignorant' and 'disrespectful'

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) – Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann on Friday described protesters who interrupted her foreign policy speech aboard the USS Yorktown the day before as "ignorant" and "disrespectful."

"They haven't been told what was done for them and that's what's a shame. And I think that as soon as they would know, if they understood the heavy price that was paid for that First Amendment right, they'd be much more respectful," Bachmann said while shaking hands at a Veterans Day parade in Columbia, South Carolina.

On Thursday, about a dozen protesters caused a stir when they stood up and delivered a coordinated message through a tactic known as a "human microphone," where one person yells out a message and the rest of the group repeats it collectively. A group called Occupy Charleston claimed on its website that it has staged the interruption.

"Blaming people that disagree with you, unpatriotic socialists… this does not help the American people," the group shouted.

The disturbance drowned out the Minnesota congresswoman's remarks, and she briefly left the stage until it was over. When she returned, she praised the group's right to protest.

"Don't you just love the First Amendment? It's great, we have a great country and I want to thank you all for your understanding," she said.

But at the parade on Friday, after a woman unrelated to the group apologized for what happened at the speech, Bachmann talked about the incident with a harsher tone than the one she took the previous day

"I was surrounded by heroes yesterday on the USS Yorktown who paid a big price for them, and they're just ignorant of that," Bachmann responded. "That's all. They're ignorant and they were disrespectful, but you know someday hopefully they'll come to know the price that was applied."

  3. Just Saying

    Michelle, Michelle, Michelle,

It is you who are ignorant – ignorant of just about everything. As to being disrespectful, to whom were they being disrespectful? America's veterans who fought and suffered or who were maybe injured or even killed protecting the right to free speech? As one who wore the uniform for 34 years, I don't think so. Disrespectful to you? Not possible. You have never done much to earn respect and you have more than wiped out any credit you might have had coming by the hate-filled nonsense and treasonous drivel you spout every time you open your mouth. Just Saying...

I personally believe that it was only a matter of time before these Occupy Everything protests just turned into a bunch of people looking for reasons to heckle candidates they don't like. Be that as it may, Michele Bachmann calling these people out as abusers of the First Amendment is like the pot calling the kettle black. Her entire support base is the Tea Party, a group of people who do pretty much the exact same thing as the Occupiers, just at the opposite end of the political spectrum. The whole lot of them – on BOTH sides – abuse the rights that they have been given by people who have fought and died for their right to do so. It's the worst form of hypocrisy, yet people only recognize it when their opponents are doing it.

Seal Team I think I've contacted the disease. It started as a rash, then a serious desire to breed my very close relatives. I caught it after skimming the stations on the radio and picking up a split second of Sean Hannity. I knew the Rush strain was serious, but the Hannity version as lowered my IQ at least 50 points in the past ten minutes. I nnneed hhelp soo\ne.

Wow, while tea baggers and Congressmen from the GOP interrupt and insult the POTUS Bachmann calls them great Americans. When Occupy folks interrupted her she calls them ignorant and disrespectful. The POTUS deserves much more respect than you lady.

Free speech doesn't just mean that YOU have the right to free speech. The protestors have a right as well. Doesn't sound like they were ignorant to me – sounds like they knew EXACTLY what they were doing. Did you get the message, or are you still ignorant?

Like she would know anything about fighting for freedoms. That she would hint that anyone died so that she could speak her garbage is an insult to the dead and the living alike.

These "occupy" people need to find something better to do than waste time staging protests and camping out. Don't like what you have in life? Here is a clue, do something about it for yourself... don't blame everyone else. News flash, it isn't the governments job to make sure you are provided for... although a lot of people think it is. Do something productive and maybe you won't need to complain about everything!!

  19. PleaseWait

Its like a little child screaming when the adults are trying to talk. Just be a grown up, let them have their turn to speak, then its your turn to use your freedom of speech given to you and say what you have to say. Don't pretend that these protesters speak for for 99% of America.

I don't like Michelle, but she's right. The right to free speech is that the GOVERNMENT can't make rules/laws infringing on speech. It does NOT mean you can stop someone else from speaking by simply shouting over them. If you disagree with someone, stop them and dialogue. You can't drown someone else's ideas/beliefs/right to communicate those belief by not allowing them to speak.

The people in this country suck sometimes.

"Ignorant and disrespectful" is very much like "fair and balanced". Bachmann's quotes are a lot like scratching a blackboard, irritating and worthy of silence.

This is a woman who goes around the country with her horrible husband trashing Gay people, calling them horrible names and demeaning them in the most ignorant and disrespectful fashiion. This is a woman who insults and demeans our President in the most un-American way. This is a woman who calls the unemployed lazy and insults people who don't share her narrow view on religion, country and family values. This is a woman who is so ignorant she actually signed a pledge that stated slavery was a good thing for black children. For Michele Bachmann to call anyone ignorant and disrespectful is just about the most hypocritcal and incredible things I have ever heard this insane woman say.
