Bachmann: Protesters were 'ignorant' and 'disrespectful'

Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) – Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann on Friday described protesters who interrupted her foreign policy speech aboard the USS Yorktown the day before as "ignorant" and "disrespectful."

"They haven't been told what was done for them and that's what's a shame. And I think that as soon as they would know, if they understood the heavy price that was paid for that First Amendment right, they'd be much more respectful," Bachmann said while shaking hands at a Veterans Day parade in Columbia, South Carolina.

On Thursday, about a dozen protesters caused a stir when they stood up and delivered a coordinated message through a tactic known as a "human microphone," where one person yells out a message and the rest of the group repeats it collectively. A group called Occupy Charleston claimed on its website that it has staged the interruption.

"Blaming people that disagree with you, unpatriotic socialists… this does not help the American people," the group shouted.

The disturbance drowned out the Minnesota congresswoman's remarks, and she briefly left the stage until it was over. When she returned, she praised the group's right to protest.

"Don't you just love the First Amendment? It's great, we have a great country and I want to thank you all for your understanding," she said.

But at the parade on Friday, after a woman unrelated to the group apologized for what happened at the speech, Bachmann talked about the incident with a harsher tone than the one she took the previous day

"I was surrounded by heroes yesterday on the USS Yorktown who paid a big price for them, and they're just ignorant of that," Bachmann responded. "That's all. They're ignorant and they were disrespectful, but you know someday hopefully they'll come to know the price that was applied."

It was you & your supporters ( the poor fools ) that were disrespectful Michele Bachmann!
The protesters exercising their first amendment rights only wanted a minute of your time.
As President ( you only wish – in your dremas ) you would be required to represent ALL the people of the United States of America!

I am embarrassed that this person is even considered a serious contender to run anything but a prison road crew. Every time she opens her mouth i cringe. Take a lesson from your twin sister sarah and go away. Maybe move to alaska and you two can talk to each other about how smart you are – you are the Only ones who would believe it.

And yet the Westboro Baptist Church folk aren't ignorant and disrespectful to our fallen troops, but Michele Bachman will support them wholeheartedly? And she is the voice of the Republican Party??? Yes, people are finally getting smart.

Our country is under attack from fundamentalist extremism. It has cost us over 4,000 human lives, hundreds of thousands of physically and mentally injured young people, trillions of dollars in war costs and corporation greed and corruption. Perhaps trillions in offshore accounts by those who push the propaganda that supporting them is somehow patriotic!

Michelle Bachmann is a willful and horrid participant in ignorance and is arrogantly rude, unpatriotic, and the nastiest she can be with her ignorance toward our president.

I go on several site every day and on all of them except CNN you get rational people who agree to disagree. On CNN you get people who are so full of hate for anyone who has a different opinion from theirs. Read all the post above almost everyone includes name calling and down right disrespect. Is that what is taught in our liberal universities? Everyone of you could learn a lesson in civility.

QS, Nice try but the very first line shot your argument out of the water " the right to hold opinion without interference" these so called enlightened ones were indeed interfering with someones opinion.

Don't particulary like her but she's right. The difference here is that she was giving a speech and these so called protested think it is ok to disrupt it. That my friends is disrespectful. And if you don't think so then your parents didn't teach you very well. Where does it end? I'm sure some of these people making comments here were offended when that clown called the Prez a liar. It's no different. Both were disrespectful.

Listen Ms Bachman, youre on the campaign trail, and people dont like your message..not even Republicans. If the blowback bothers you...fold the tent.

just because you give a speech in proximity to a place of significance to those who have served in the military does not mean you deserve the respect of those who served in the military. why would you even try that?

She is bad news. I hope she keeps making these comments so OWS will keep showing up at her speaking appearances. It is probably a plan of hers becuase without the protestors she would have no coverage in the media. She is so far off to the right and uncompromising that she would be the final nail in the coffin of the USA is she ever became President. Just another Repub to poke fun at nothing more.

I think it is only right the Bachmann shoud come out now and officially state to the country that the tea partiers who disrupted the town meetings last year and any another events the dems have held were "ignorant" and "disrespectful" and that "someday hopefully they'll come to know the price that was applied." She should show the world that she is not as two-faced as she appears!

You and your kind has kept Congress at a "stalemate" for your own personnel agenda. You have shown disrespect for the President of the United States, by never calling him President Obama or even Mr. Obama. You got your nerve, you hypocrite! Go back to you day job, preaching that Gays are sinners. What happened to the Christian Creed "Love they neighbor as yourself". Again you are nothing but a neo con hypocrite!

WHY does OBAMA remain Silent on these Protesters ? WHY does he run off to Bali ? USA looks silly – the President should SHUT IT DOWN – PUT THE PROTESTERS TO WORK

I find it funny that Bachmann has the nerve to call anyone 'ignorant and disrespectful.' Her entire campaign has been based on ignorance and disrespect of people who do not share her extreme beliefs. The protestors were not vulgar to Bachmann (despite her supporters shouting back that they are uneducated socialists) and they were also exercising their First Amendment rights to free speech.

Dear CNN, you could actually do some journalistic work and interview the protesters to see if the Congress woman's claims of ignorance are true, instead of just being her megaphone.

This woman is an idiot. First of all, she should look in the mirror when she talks about people being socialists. Her family has received government subsidies for their farm and her husband also gets medicaid checks for his useless clinic. So please, Michelle stop talking and go away. You, like the rest of your party, are pathetic!!
