Columbia, South Carolina (CNN) – Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann on Friday described protesters who interrupted her foreign policy speech aboard the USS Yorktown the day before as "ignorant" and "disrespectful."
"They haven't been told what was done for them and that's what's a shame. And I think that as soon as they would know, if they understood the heavy price that was paid for that First Amendment right, they'd be much more respectful," Bachmann said while shaking hands at a Veterans Day parade in Columbia, South Carolina.
On Thursday, about a dozen protesters caused a stir when they stood up and delivered a coordinated message through a tactic known as a "human microphone," where one person yells out a message and the rest of the group repeats it collectively. A group called Occupy Charleston claimed on its website that it has staged the interruption.
"Blaming people that disagree with you, unpatriotic socialists… this does not help the American people," the group shouted.
The disturbance drowned out the Minnesota congresswoman's remarks, and she briefly left the stage until it was over. When she returned, she praised the group's right to protest.
"Don't you just love the First Amendment? It's great, we have a great country and I want to thank you all for your understanding," she said.
But at the parade on Friday, after a woman unrelated to the group apologized for what happened at the speech, Bachmann talked about the incident with a harsher tone than the one she took the previous day
"I was surrounded by heroes yesterday on the USS Yorktown who paid a big price for them, and they're just ignorant of that," Bachmann responded. "That's all. They're ignorant and they were disrespectful, but you know someday hopefully they'll come to know the price that was applied."

The protesters are right though calling people who disagree with you "unpatriotic socialists" only hurts our country.
"And let you lying puke libtards have free run of this blog to spew your lies and self delusion?"
Now now...if you weren't a conservative and therefore missing the gene that permits the detection of irony, you'd probably recognize just how much you help us "libtards" by presenting a picture of the angry Teatroll spewing misinformed, virulent, limibaugh-esque, substancless vitriol. We thank you for your support.
The Real Tom Paine – if it's any consolation, I've raised the same complaint whenever I've seen speakers prevented from speaking, no matter who the speaker was. At best, this is childish behavior; no matter what light it is cast in, though, it remains fundamentally un-American to prevent someone from even expressing their views. I'm not familiar with the incidents you mentioned, but if someone was shouted down while trying to speak I would find that just as shameful and disgusting.
"Yeah! If they knew the price that was paid for the First Amendment, they wouldn't exercise their right to do so!!"
What a moron.
You know, she reminds me of that song by Dr. Alban called "Look who's talking now". Yup...look who's walking
@Scott and Annie from Atlanta. The difference is the tea party protesters, as offensive as their signs might be, organized their protests on their own time, their own event, getting permits from the city in advance. They did NOT crash an Obama event or an Obama speech. If you want to hear Obama speak at an event, that's fine. The tea party people are not going to show up and rudely drown out Obama. The speech is organized by Obama-supporting organizations, for Obama fans. Tea party will not be there. But YOU guys are now rudely invading, ambushing, and crashing events that are not organized for you, but for their own supporters. This Bachmann speech event was NOT an open town hall meeting for open debate. It was a speech for Bachmann supporters. Please respect each others events and venues, or else I guarantee you the Tea Party will retaliate with your own, rude "mic check" medicine when Obama speaks in the future.
Michelle the founders were very quiet and respecful of british rule when the shot was fired ( in concord nh).
The first amendment provids a redress of grievances by the citizens ( thats us) against the government ( thats YOU).
There is a time and place for everything, including protests. The Yorktown on the eve of Veterans Day was not the time or place. I disagree with Michèle Bachmann on just about everything, but I certainly agree with her on this issue.
Bachman I wish was there to say you a do nothing crongress and we are 99%.
Vote all the republican out of the office.
She doesn't get it. She's a moron. She's worthless.
When is this delusional loser going to vanish from national discussion? She's toast by Feb 1. By then, GOP Prez wantabees will have been thinned out of coo coo teabaggers.
My first awareness of this lady was when, on the floor of the House, she called the late Congressman John Murtha a "coward" who wanted to "cut and run" in Iraq. When she showed such disrepect for a genuine war hero like Mr. Murtha she lost all credibility in my book for being taken as a serious human being, much less a serious and responsible office holder.
"Ignorant" and "disrespectful"? OMG. Bachmann just described herself!
This from a woman who disrespects the President every opportunity she gets. Michelle, you are one of those who started this practice about 3 years ago.
Bachmann does not get that just because she stood in the presence of patriots and men and women who have served our country, does not mean that she A) understands and B)is a patriot herself. Rarely does standing in the shadow of something make you a giant
"Hey pot, this is kettle. How you doin'?... Good, good.... Hey, you know what? You're black."
Democrats, liberals, leftists, "progressives", communists, anarchists, OWS losers, etc. all the same trash. Shouting people down, intimidating people, suppressing free speech (unless they agree with it), disruption, violence, destruction of property, turning public parks into open sewers.
Yes, these are the people that we want to run this country. America has been awakened thanks to the Three Stooges: Obama, Reid and Pelosi. We witnessed how much damage you can do to this country in a very short time. 2012 will see the rest of this disastrous leftist experiment thrown on the garbage heap.
"And let you lying puke libtards have free run of this blog to spew your lies and self delusion? Not a chance in the world "FLIndependent" (yeah, right... independent! Like I said, LIES!)"
Excuse me..I am an Independent. What, are you so delusional that you think all Independents are right leaning?? And where are the lies...please inform us since you seem to know so much.
I think they understood their rights and their comments. Only Bachmann would take a direct insult to her as a slight against our troops. They just spoke back when she started labeling people. Bachmann is one of those dangerous people that uses rhetoric to make people hate. Maybe a soldier should inform Bachmann that they are free to speak for themselves too.
Ms Bachmann is the one who needs to learn that you EARN respect, not demand it! Why the voters in the Mn 6th district continue to send her back to Washington is beyond me. They need to send her packing. She has been nothing but a backseat congresswoman and an embarassment to Mn.
I am a vet and I find her ignorant and disrespectful. How dare she use the military, soldiers and their families to spread her bull$#!*.
I always thought here in Kentucky we had the worst of the gop (McConnell and Paul) but I think Minny has topped them with Bauchman. One can only hope that she will eventually go away. Obama/Biden in 2012.
When I hear the words ignorant and disrespectful, Bachman comes to mind. Why is someone this unintelligent still being considered a viable canidate?
In America, many live who have seen first hand the tortured and broken bodies of our war heros. Some carry the remainder of their bodies into our American lives, and on foreign soil their body parts remain. In our freedom, however, we do not take away the freedom of others, who equally deserve the right to speak. When we do, we become no greater than those who would silence us with their heavy hand of death. Freedom of speech can easily be taken from someone by the "human microphone". To pretend that it is simply a group exercising their freedom of speech is to offer no respect to the one s who patiently wait to hear the one voice. Is it with respect that the crowd of "human microphonists" drown out the words of one that others might want to hear. The voice of one is not a property for the one who speaks, but instead, it is a symbol of representation, that others may listen to and decide if they want to use it to a greater means..... or not. It would seem that the injustice is not upon the respect of Miss Bachmann, but, the disrespect was felled upon those who wanted to hear her words and eventually vote for her..... or .... perhaps.... not!
A BIG thank you to The Real Tom Paine and Lynda/California for telling it like it is.
