CNN Poll: Gingrich soars, Cain drops

politicalmugshot

Washington (CNN) – A new national survey of Republicans indicates that it's basically all tied up between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich in the race for the GOP presidential nomination, with Gingrich on the rise and businessman Herman Cain falling due to the sexual harassment allegations he's been facing the past two weeks.

According to a CNN/ORC International Poll released Monday, 24% of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP say Romney is their most likely choice for their party's presidential nominee with Gingrich at 22%. Romney's two-point advantage is well within the survey's sampling error.

Full results (pdf)

While the level of support has pretty much stayed the same for Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who's making his second bid for the White House, Gingrich has seen his support jump 14 points since October.

The poll also indicates that 14 percent back Cain, down 11 points from last month. Four women have alleged that Cain sexually harassed them during the late 1990s when he headed the National Restaurant Association. Cain denies the allegations.

"Cain is struggling with the charges of sexual harassment, and while most Republicans tend to dismiss those charges, roughly four in 10 Republicans think this is a serious matter and tend to believe the women who made those charges," CNN Polling Director Keating Holland said.

The survey indicates that only a bare majority of Republicans tend to believe Cain, and more than a third say he should end his presidential campaign. Among the general public, Cain has a bigger credibility problem - 50% of all Americans say they tend to believe the women and only a third say they believe Cain.

"Not surprisingly, there is a big gender gap on this matter - women say this is a serious matter and believe the women, but men say the story has been overblown and are split on which side they believe," Holland added.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry is at 12% in the survey, basically all even with Cain for third place in the hunt for the nomination. Perry was at 13% in CNN's October poll. The new survey was conducted Friday through Sunday, entirely after last Wednesday's presidential debate where Perry suffered an embarrassing "oops" moment when the one-time front-runner struggled for nearly a minute to name the third of three federal agencies he would cut if elected president.

While Perry's overall horse race number has not suffered, dig deeper into the poll and it appears the "oops" moment is hurting his standing with Republican voters. In September, 72% of Republicans said Perry had the right personal qualities to be president. A majority of Republicans still feel that way, but that number has dropped 14 points since September.

According to the poll, Rep. Ron Paul of Texas, who's making his third run for the presidency, is at 8%, with Rep. Michele Bachmann of Minnesota at 6%, former Utah Gov. and former ambassador to China Jon Huntsman and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania each at 3%, and 8% are unsure.

The poll's Monday release comes seven weeks and one day before the Iowa caucuses, the first contest on the primary and caucus calendar. The survey indicates that just over six in 10 Republicans say they may change their minds, with 31% say they will definitely support the candidate they are currently backing.

With Cain dropping and Perry flat-lining, it looks like it's Gingrich's turn to become the "anybody but Romney" candidate. If the GOP race becomes a two-man battle between Romney and Gingrich, the poll indicates they are well-matched. Romney and Gingrich are the two most popular Republican candidates among the GOP rank and file, and the only two with favorable ratings above 50% among the Republicans surveyed.

More than three-quarters of Republicans think both men have the right personal qualities to be president and more than seven in 10 Republicans say they agree with Gingrich and Romney on important issues.

The key difference between Romney and Gingrich is electability. For the first time in CNN's polling, Romney now tops Barack Obama in a head-to-head matchup among registered voters. But Gingrich faces an 8-point deficit when paired with Obama in a general election matchup.

"Among all Americans, 58% say that Romney has the personal qualities a president should have, compared to just 45% for Gingrich. Most Americans don't agree with either man on important issues," Holland said.

The CNN poll was conducted by ORC International, with 1,036 adults Americans, including 480 Republicans and Independents who lean Republican, as well as 552 men and 514 women, questioned by telephone. The overall sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points, with a sampling error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points for questions only of Republicans and independents who lean towards the GOP.

Newt comes across as a smug arrogant guy sometimes. Speaks like a know it all most of the time, I don't think he knows it all... and I hear interesting things about his previous 'track-record' that are disturbing.

No doubt the scandal has hurt. But part of the problem is probably that his 9-9-9 plan is incredibly stupid, and outside of that one little trick, Cain has got nothing.

Oh well, with a FOtM GoP candidate, at least we can expect a new Bad Lip Reading of Newt.

Hilarious! One pretender to the Crown [Gingrich] SOARS to 20+% and another drops like a rock [Cain]. But the "heir apparent" [Romney] doesn't budge, either up or down. Looks like the 'anyone but Romney' Tea Party faction has found an new BFF in Newt (at least until the NEXT one comes along).

While Romney may "look" more presidential, he wouldn't compare in a debate to Gingrich. And if you put Obama and Gingrich together in a debate, it would not turn out good for the president.

As a Democrat, I guess I am actually hoping to see a REAL Tea Partier become the GOP candidate. Why? TP needs to be thoroughly discredited. If a Romney/Gingrich emerges as their nominee and barely loses to Obama, TP will simply exhume the tired argument that if only they ran further right, they would have won. I say, let the TP field their candidate, and let the TP'er get whipped by Obama by historical margins. Then, and only then, will the moderate Republican re-emerge and take their Party back from insanity. A functioning Democracy needs two credible Parties. I would like to see an electable Republican Party staffed by adults take back the reins.

I'm not a Republican and probably never will. However, for the first time I got to watch the Republican presidential nominee debates and I gotta admit – Cain to doesn't at all have the strong poise, that formidable character to be trusted. He did not directly answer the questions he was asked and It just looks like all he can say it 99 as a response to any question. 4 women alleging sexual harassment by Cain cant all be phony money mongers paid by Democrats to thwart his hopes of making it to the white house. Ron Paul is the only one who will bring meaningful change. He sucks at delivering his message, but if you piece together what he says, he's spot on. I like Newt Gingrich a lot, and I'd love to see a debate between him and our disaster in the White House. However, he carries a lot of bagage and the Democrats succeeded in trashing him pretty well with the general public including the independent voters needed to beat Obama. Considering the terrible damage Obama has done to our nation in less than 3 years, and the damage he could inflict with 4 more that Republicans have to be focused on insuring that he is not reelected. Right now it still looks solidly like Gov Romney is the Republican most likely to beat Obama! Under Obama our nation has had enough decline and despair. We have to make a change or our country might never be able to recover!

I don't think Cain's problem is whether people believe the charges or not but how he has handled it. He knew that, at one time in his career, charges were made. He should have been out ahead of this story, he lost the narrative. He is botching this and Republicans can't afford this kind of campaign. Also, after John Edwards citizens are leery to fully believe ANY politician, there will always be that nagging doubt.

Oh Pleeze. Gingrich. lol. Nuff said. The Republicans cannot make up their minds. Every month they have another person leading in the polls indicating how fractured they are as a party. If a new person was to enter the race at this late appointed hour, that person will be the new front runner. It seems every last one of them with a few exceptions have been at the top of their polls at one time or another only to fall back to earth. Remember Backman? Remember Perry? Remember Cain? Remember Sarah? Remember Trump? Whose next? Rick Santorium? Well, my advise to Gingrich...enjoy your fifteen minutes while it last as it surely will be over before the month is over.

Just think. When the GOP regain power, they will start a war with Iran (totally unfunded of course). Then they will draft all the poor people to fight(die) in the war (just like the GOP wants) and give "no bid" contracts to the rich people. Killing two birds with one stone!!! Then we can use Iran's oil to pay for the war. And when the war is over, Iran will sell us cheap oil!!! Just like Iraq........Oh wait........Never mind.

Here is a candidate that talks about conservative values but certainly has not demonstrated that in his privarte life. He is also talking about repealing the Sarbannes Oxely and Dodd Frank laws. Both laws that were put in place to check the banks and Wall Street. Do we want to go back to Wall Street and the banking system of the year 2000?

I would say that the Republican hopes for a Presidential change, are looking pretty dismal right now – with not quite 25% of their followers agreeing on a contender. The 'anyone but Obama' mantra will not get out the vote since there is really no appetite for experimenting with 'fixing' the recession any more. If the economy inexorably improves – and there is perceptible improvement, as little as it may be – then the White House is really Obama's to keep.
But even more chilling for the GOP, is the growing dislike the Tea Party is generating. The three (rapidly fading) sweetheats of that flash in the pan movement are/were Perry, Bachmann and of course Cain.
While the OWS phenomenon amy never translate into a formal political muscle – it is indisputable that a very large body of ordinary Americans identify with their values – and these values run counter to mainstream Republican ideology.

Corporate interests and an elite financial oligarchy control America, not the American people. Democracy is currently an illusion. The people need to realize that without introducing campaign finance reform, or completely eliminating private interest contributions to candidates, it will remain the same. Ron Paul is the closest to a government founded on America's original core principals. No way Romney can beat Obama. These polls will be drastically different after Romney starts debating Obama.

One critically essential thing that Obama and even GW Bush has is their ability to relate to the average American voter. Romney is seriously lacking that and it will be his downfall.

Gingrich is just as sleazy as Cain, he just has affairs with multiple women. He served one with divorce papers when she was in the hospital for treament for breast cancer. This is no moral man. He also was involved in a Congressional scandal back when he was Speaker in th 1990s – so this is evangelical's dream. Gingrich has shown himself to be an arrogant wind bag in the debates. He is just out selling books like Cain and Palin. He never intended to be in office again. I think Romney is the really one wants to be a real candidate but he is so unqualified, so unpriincipaled, and not trustworthy. Who knows he might decide to be a Democrat tomorrow if it would raise his poll numbers? He is laughable and about as genuine as his last 20 different positions on every issue.

I felt for months that there is one person in the Republican party who could beat Obama by a landslide. The man already has credibility with Democrats and Republicans, having served in both administrations, and has experience. The man already has credibility with fiscal hawks since he took the initiative to reduce spending. The man already has great credibility with average Americans since he has held others in power (but still his subordinates) responsible for failure – and fired them. The man, who I would vote for in a heartbeat over any one else, is former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates.

Why are people not evaluating Huntsman? He is the logical choice from those before us. I feel sorry for Perry with his mind going blank, ... and as if it has never happened to each of us!! Come on, give the man a break!! And Cain, this is an injustice if he is innocent. Penn State riots yet on real evidence, and a lynching of Cain on what evidence?? But, Huntsman is maybe better than America deserves and America will elect accordingly. But I hope America gets on it;s knees and repents of it's pride and gets on with being whom it claims to be. Huntsman, ... people need to do their homework and look at this man who is clearly the best choice, and for all the right reasons.

The Republican Party apparently doesn't believe in history repeating itself. The GOP chose Bob Dole and John McCain because the party felt it owned these men something for years of service. The result was a Democratic victory. Now Romney is running again and I am willing to bet that the party faithful will reward Mitt by nominating him. The result will be an Obama victory in 2012.

In some way, it is better for Cain to go down this way. At least, he can claim that he was 'destroyed' by the left-leaning media and what not, instead of having to remain in the race and expose further his total lack of credentials and knowledge of the issues.

The liberal whining on here is hilarious...."Newt comes across as arogant....a know it all...." These are the EXACT traits of the Oblunder in Chief. Newt will destroy Obama in a debate...it would be worthy of pay-per-view. The reason you libs call him "Smug, arogant, etc..." is because he's simply intelligent, and you aren't capable of understanding anyone that can discuss the issues in depth; but instead want to cling to the shallow "fads," and "catchy phrases," spewed by the DNC and Obama's minions....the Occupiers are the best cross section example of the Obama base, and the liberal media continues to show the country just how pathetic they are...

Gingrich has been vilified in the media since he was Speaker of the House and the assaults on Cain is nothing compared to what is coming for Gingrich. The democrats should be concerned with Newt. He led the republican charge during Clinton's first term and forced him to move to the center. If there is anyone who has the capacity of compromise and civility, it is Gingrich. He would be the only one to annihilate Obama in a debate. Everyone brags about the "Clinton" economy. Remember, the first two years of the Clinton presidency was social medicine and higher taxes. Why else would he lose the congress at mid term for the first time in 40 years? Balanced budgets, welfare reform, etc. came out of the Contract with America and Clinton at least was willing to compromise. If we end up with Obama for a second term, there is no more campaigning required and we will see an epic disaster for this country. God help us.

Newt is the real reason Bill Clinton gets so much credit for his presidency. Newt, as speaker, balanced the budget, reformed welfare and increased defense and intelligence capabilities, all against President Clintons best judgement. The result: Budget surpluses which are always credited to Clinton by the left, 60% of welfare recipients were able to find jobs or get job training and of course, strong national defense and intelligence gathering speaks for itself. I can't think of a better person to fix all the problems Obama has refused to even address.

    Newt Gingrich on foreign policy.....

Newt Gingrich is raising funds and speaking out against Obama's decision to withdrawl from Irag...

Funny in a very sad ironic way, because Mr. Gingrich played such an important secret role in the planning of the war in the first place.. Hired as a consultant to the Pentagon's Defense Policy Board, by Rumsfled, and Cheney, Newt was involved from the start, that is in September of 2001, just days after the September 11th attack, invited to a 19 hours planning meeting at the Pentagon, on what to do in response to the 9-11-2001 attack. Even at this early date Newt was pushing the invasion of Iraq as the opportunity to replace Saddam... the members of that meeting agreed to attack Iraq as soon as the initial phase of the war with Afghanistan was over. Newt has stated ”If we don’t use this as the moment to replace Saddam after we replace the Taliban, we are setting the stage for disaster.” Newt was right there with Cheney and Rumsfled involved in several meetings at the Pentagon and the CIA. One reference to back this up is a March 16th 2011 story by Megan Carpentier, just google it.

Who decided to disband the Iraq army leaving the pipeline, power plants, arms depots unprotected, even Patton used Nazi's to run the country until he had people to replace them...

Disbanding the Iraqi army led to looting, blown up oil wells and pipelines, looted weapons, and IED's...

    Was that your idea Newt?

Newt failed in his foreign policy...

He is too reckless with the lives of our soldiers...as many who never serve in uniform...Cheney took 5 deferments to stay out of Vietnam, Bush trained on an obsolete aircraft...

After how many dead, and wounded U.S. soldiers, maybe Newt should just call it a day, and go home and file for bankruptcy

Cain never was in the race. So it doesn't matter what he did or didn't do. He did what many men in power do: abuse that power. What else is new!? Not presidential material anyway. So it's a non-issue. Always was.
Not a single one of Repub candidates remembers that the reason the health care law got passed was not that it made anybody happy, but that it made everybody equally UNhappy. That's the political "sweet spot", when everybody is equally ticked off. Or maybe they all have a memory like Perry's... here today, gone tomorrow.
They also forget that it passed because the CBO confirmed that it would reduce the deficit over 20 years. A fact that Repubs conveniently forget since it raises the question: Why abolish a law that will reduce the deficit when you are so much against the growing deficit? The deficit problem IS a reflection of the health care problem, solve one and the other nears solution. That's just one of the illogical stances that all the Repub candidates take that makes me wonder if they have a brain. If you draw conclusions on just the facts you like, rejecting or ignoring the rest, you can justify almost any conclusion you want to. They want to get rid of health care, so they conveniently ignore the link between health care and the deficit. For a President, that kind of "cherry-pick the facts you like" thinking could be extremely dangerous. We saw that kind of thinking with Bush – big time. And it has cost us many of our sons and daughters.

Let them continue to eat their own. Romney may have the greatest chance of both winning the nomination and beating President Obama but the long-standing facts remain: the economy was in the can during the reign of King George, has not been helped by the GOP and whatever plan they hatch is not going to solve our economic woes within a single term. If anything, a concervative will try to change America in ways which result in more problems and increased frustration by already fickle voters. Perhaps if the GOP would have cooperated more and obstructed less we'd all be in better shape.

I really hope people wake up to why the media is blacking out Ron Paul. If you looked at his 30 year record you would find a man who has NEVER swayed from his political positions, he's NEVER taken donations from banks, corporations or lobbyists, he's fought for our soldiers when they wanted to revoke benefits from them. He's fought for transparancy of the Federal Reserve, which is just a group of bankers who print money out of thin air that creates inflation, create interest rates that radically screw with the market. He's the only canidate that has actually served the military and that's why he's the most supported by our miltary men and woman!!! He's not bought like the rest of them. If you research him, you will see he is the most consistant record of all the other canidates. If you want your country to repair itself, he is the only hope!! $1 Trillion budget cut in the first year and his salary will be that of the working man $45k/yearly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Paul

Newt's problem is that he is almost always the smartest guy in the room- and he knows it, which is why he often comes across as arrogant. The good thing about Newt, as we have seen in the debates, is that he will call out the media when they aren't being truthful. This will create even more negative stories that the leftist lemmings will whole heartedly believe, while rallying the conservative base. A debate between Obama and Gingrich would be hysterical. Faced with having to display a grasp of foreign and economic policy without relying on someone else's words on a teleprompter, Obama will be left with nothing more the his usual uttering of "uh's" and "um's" the media delete from their transcripts.

What does CNN mean when they say " most americans don't agree with either on important issues"? Which issues do they believe are the important ones? If the issue is the economy, Mitt Romney will win. 16% of Americans are either unemployed or underemployed ( working far less than they would like to)

President Obama is working hard to try to get all of the Bush/Cheney mess cleaned up and, yes, it will take more than 4 years to do so. He's had a good start and putting someone else in as President (especially since it would be a Republican) would undo any progress the President has made and we will be right back where we started from in 2008. With your protection of Clinton, Kennedy and Obama in this area, you are hippocrites and BS astists. The majority of Americans, (after BHO has shown his cards), have completely caught on to the tactics of the Left. I'm impressed with Newt Gingrich. By far, he is the smartest and quickest mind. His capacity to answer and account for his positions makes him interesting. Notwithstanding past ethical concerns (politically motivated against him) and his personal choices in romance, he is sharp, conservative, innovative, happily and securely married, well-qualified to be president. At this moment, Romney may be tops because people aren't engaged yet. But once Americans hear Gingrich speak, his range, ideas, and focus, they will feel confidence in him. He's taken some positions I don't like before. But he lead the Republican takeover of Congress in the 1990s and has proven talent.

I like Cain. But even before the unfair allegations, I still wanted to know and see more of the man's ability to be president. I like Michele Bachmann but feel she is not projecting well. Santorum did not look good in the debates. Perry is nose-diving; any candidate who sounds like George W. Bush and stumbles in speech like Sarah Palin will fail. No offense to them, either. Ron Paul is a libertarian nut whose foreign policy is kooky. Huntsman is a Democrat or at least laid down with them and came up with their fleas. Romney is an establishment capon. He's not the one to lead us. It looks like if we want a conservative, we back Newt. And it may not be easy at first. But listen to the guy.

Shows how easy people are influenced by news media. Newt been getting all the good coverage his numbers go up (just like Cain, Perry and Bachmann for a short time). So few decide for themselves, on facts and on candidate’s actual track record. Those that do choose Ron Paul

I laugh when people repeat negative things media says about Ron Paul. They don’t even know they are being manipulated subconsciously by pundits. But I admit it worked on me in the past election. Last time around when someone said Ron Paul, my mind instantly thought(negatives put there) by media . I said psss yea whatever hes crazy<- something that wasnt even my own opinion. so I didnt even look into him. Glad I did not make the same mistake again.

Newt is an extremely knowledgeable man who has proven over decades to be a good leader and a true conservative. Newt is book-smart, but he's unwilling to accept that all the Republican policies he advocates (trickle-down economics, etc.) are all PROVEN FAILURES. Plus, he's arrogant and has shown that he will put his own personal interests ahead of the welfare of our country. Where are your minds America. Wake Up! Obama, Romney, Perry and Cain are funded by the banking cartels. Ron Paul is by far our best choice.
Ron Paul serves on the House Committees on Foreign Affairs and Financial Services, and on the Joint Economic Committee. He is the chairman of the Financial Services Subcommittee on Domestic Monetary Policy and Technology, where he has been an outspoken critic of American foreign and monetary policy.
Dr. Paul is clearly the most qualified candidate to tackle our Nations critical economic and foreign affair issues. The rest of the top tier candidates like Romney, Perry, Cain and Obama are a bunch of clowns who receive their funds from major donors from Wall Street.
Ron Paul receives more financial contributions from active duty vets than all the other candidates combined. Why is this? They know that Ron Paul is the best solution for our National Defense, though the establishment media is trying to make him look like a kook who would hurt national security. We need to defend our borders and give all these National Guard troops who are on their 3rd and 4th tours of duty a break. What if there was a real war in the near future? Our military is already at the breaking point from wars started to help banks and oil companies. We need an agenda to help America. Vote for Ron Paul 2012!!!!

Many Mormonians...I mean many Mormons still support polygamy; not that a president Romney would reinstate polygamy in the USA but I rather have a Christian president than a president who is a member of cult or a dangerous ideology such as Islam.
And I am a liberal Democrat, so I am not word-processing this entry as a conservative Repugnican who thinks I am holier than thou; many Republicans believe all Democrats are atheists or Islamists but that is not the case.

valwayne – - – forgive the brashness, but "what the hell is wrong with you!" "The damage Obama has caused in 3 years ?"

Are you and others so distant from reality that you do not recognize the waste laid by the GOP since President Obama was sworn in? The GOP declared war on the Presdient and the Administration from Day 1. The GOP made it consistently clear they were going to say "no" to everything related to the Obama Administration – and they have!

The GOP has said "Up Yours" to the entire country – in fact, to the world – because of their bigotted rage over the concept of President Obama defeating their choise for POTUS. The GOP has demonstrated – as a collective group – they care not one whit about the country and its people. They are so full of anger, and arrogance, they are committed to throwing out the baby with the bath water.

How about "What's Good for the Country?!?" Well, that's not in the GOP's collective vocabulary.

Newt is just mirroring Ron Paul to steal his thunder. Newt's voting record will show you his true colors. He is just another globalist like every other president since Reagan. He is up there because he is a smooth talker and is the only one up there with a clue besides Dr. Paul.

The establishment is just cycling through it's puppets. Trying to gauge who will be best to continue the agenda. CBS gave Ron Paul 89 seconds to speak in the last debate. He wins the majority of the polls (they just show you the ones he loses on TV). They fear Ron Paul because they can't buy him.

The sad part is thesheep will still vote for the one with the best hair or catch phrase.

Jerry, what about the hypocrisy of the GOP spending 10s of millions going after Clinton and protecting Cain like he's a saint? Not one candidate slamming him for all those allegations, demanding full disclosure, calling for him to step down like they did over Clinton & Weiner. And how about Gingrich leading the charge to take down Clinton while nailing his aide and his wife's in the hospital getting cancer surgery. Gotta love those family values.

Thought I'd check out CNN site and boy have I confirmed what I suspected – Democrats and liberals hang out here. We all have our political opinions and preferences – that's one of the great things about this country. Gingrich may have worked with President Clinton to help balance the budget but his ideas are still stuck back in the 1990's. Now that Gingrich is nearing the top, they'll dig up something on him too. Interesting how nothing is coming up on Romney. He must be a media favorite. The media chooses someone and lynches the rest. It never really mattered how the public felt about it anyway because the public is to stupid to figure things out for themselves. Most people just spit out negative comments they see on TV because that is their ONLY source of candidate information. Barrack Obama was a media favorite. So, I predict Romney and Obama in 2012.

Huntsman definitely seems to be the best of the lot. He served a president of another party when asked to because he believes in service to this country over service to his political agenda or party (which of course makes him a traitor in the eyes of the GOP). He also seems to be the only one supports science, and even has a firm grasp on some scientific theories unlike others.

Would I vote for him? I would reserve that decision until some actual debates with Obama. But it isn't going to happen. The loudness is winning over the substance.

Newt is smart and smug and scary! He thinks it's OK for a government panel to decide whether or not a person can be assasinated by our government. Forget the rule of law. This is the same government that can't run anything well and has a history of corruption and bad decision making. Why anyone would like Newt is beyond me, but I think part of his appeal is that he's a sharp speaker. I'm sick of smooth talkers though. Obama is a smooth talker – a good speaker. It means nothing. Used car salesmen are smooth talkers. So are compulsive liars. Hey – maybe it does mean something? It means we are all suckers to fall for style over subtance. Give me substance now. Romeny may have the ability to gain more moderate votes but many of the far right republicans do not like the idea of a Mormon getting in office. Look at what Kennedy went through in 1960. Some Protestants, such as Norman Vincent Peale, still feared the Pope would be giving orders to a Kennedy White House. To allay such fears, Kennedy kept his distance from church officials and in a highly publicized confrontation told the Protestant ministers of the Greater Houston Ministerial Association on September 12, 1960, "I am not the Catholic candidate for President. I am the Democratic Party's candidate for President who also happens to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my Church on public matters — and the Church does not speak for me. He promised to respect the separation of church and state and not to allow Church officials to dictate public policy to him. I find the right wing Protestants the most appalling creaters in the United States. Why don't protestants have to make seperation of church and state statements when running for office?

Ron Paul is the only candidate who doesn't tell the people what they want to hear. He doesn't flip flop, he never lies, he has a perfectly common sense approach to everything from the economy to foreign policy. He's the only person you can bet will actually do the things he says, he's the only one who warned us about the economic bubble that was bound to burst and he'll get us all back to work without sticking his hands up any skirts. I don't know, has someone who makes people's skin crawl ever been elected President? Nixon, maybe, but we found that out afterwards. I wish people would take a hard look at Jon Huntsman. Best economic plan of any candidate. Common sense ideas and good experience on foreign and domestic policy. Obama needs to hope it is Cain, Perry, Gingrich, or Romney that get the nod... because as bad as his Presidency has been, America won't put one of those guys in. Cain and Perry are not smart enough for the job plan an simple. Obama will destroy either of those in a debate. Romney is politician. This is all he is, that's all he wants to be, and you can tell. That why he has no movement up or down, is does just enough to get by like a good politician. Should be a Governor of a northeastern state where no real issues need to be tackled so he can just coast along, oh wait he did that already. Romney is like Gore or Kerry. Look the part, but won't get it done, just something missing. Newt is just an old security blanket for Republicans. He's smart enough, but too idealistic. Still has a place in government, just not as the #1 guy. If Huntsman could actually get a look, Obama would be in trouble. The guy is smart, well rounded, has good ideas, proven record as a fiscal conservative, moderate on social issues, and center/right on foreign policy. That is combination we need.

Notwithstanding the fact I did not and won't vote for the present prez, (I haven't voted for a warmonger for over 50 years) I am fascinated that supposedly sophisticated and intelligent people are continuing this charade of "flavor of the month." it will take more than the limited theme of "out with Obama," to forge a reasonably strong challenge. There are serious and potentially devastating issues, both domestic and international, facing our nation. Major instability, as illustrated by the symptomatic OWS event(s). Unemployment and economic stability head the list. The trite and simplistic notions of the Tea Party types about "returning" to better times by constraining government domestic programs, is exactly contradictory. Historically, it is impossible to "go back." Only the government can bypass that "I got mine" greed; a mantra based upon corporate America's bottom line of profit above all. There is not a single innovative and charismatic candidate in the entire group of potential repub candidates. It's same old, same old, which will almost guarantee an Obama second tour.

Without knowing what she really would stand for, and all the negative speculation, Sarah Pain was the most viable, as indicated by the fact that she was, finally, her own person. After all, people with less attraction, and backing, are still "hanging on."

Only Ron Paul has a credible plan to fix whats wrong with America, more freedom, less government, no wars, less military and more trade with other nations. We create ur enemies with the wars and coups we support worldwide not because "they hate us for our freedom" – we are less free than many of the countries we complain about. Get a life and realize that simply because someone disagrees with the direction this country should be going in doesn't make them an awful human being. I am a libertarian and find it disgusting the personal attacks on the republican candidates' lives. Wow, Newt is on his third marriage, Romney is a crazy morman, Cain is a womanizing creep. So what; I'm sure you all have lived like saints your entire lives. Would you like to be judged in your next job interview based on the fact that you have been married before, or you used some lousy pick up line on a woman when you were at a bar in college, or based on your religion? Give me a break. Obama is an awful president, he may or may not be an awful human being. But you know what, my job is to judge his record as president and not judge him based on his friends, or what church he goes to, etc. Stop drinking the 'haterade' and listen to the candidates ideas. Believe it or not, a person you don't like personally may have the best ideas for this country.

Obama would wipe the floor with Gingrich on a debate. No doubt. I am an independent voter and I cannot see myself voting for any of the Republican candidates. They are just too out-of-touch with middle America, especially Romney.

Gingrich has risen to the top because in the debates he is so obviously the smartest, articulate and informed person on the stage. He truly thinks outside the box which is what this country will need in the coming years. He runs rings around the other candidates with the exception of Romney, and he beats Romney because Conservatives are not convinced that Romney is a RINO. That said, any of the Republican candidates are ten times better than the socialist Obama who the mainstream media got elected despite being a glib con artist with no experience whatsoever to be president.

sooo funny reading all your left leaning points of view, such as newt has no ideas or newt talks like a know it all, news flash Newt IS the smartest guy in politics, he has a wealth of knowledge along with a staggering amount of AMerican history knowledge in his hip pocket... doesn't have a plan? every time he opens his mouth he is talking about one plan after another, from health care to education to jobs to the economy to energy AND all the regulations brought on by odum bo that is crushing business AND he tells you where to go find the info he is talking about.

ok, now, ask yourself this... do you really think odumb o would stand any chance in a debate against Newt? as for social issues? I don't care what is in his past, everyone evolves and NO ONE is perfect, we don't need mr perfect we need a man with experience and vision, something sorely lacking in the current administration.

after iowa Santorum will be gone, Bachman will be gone, Paul will be gone, Huntsman is already gone, Perry's ego will keep him in and Cain's honor will keep him in, after New Hampshire Perry will be gone, after SC Cain will be gone... at that point Romneys weakness will become extremely clear and Newt's strengths will make him more and more appealing to the general electorate

Here's the bottom line. We (our government) needs to STOP SPENDING more money than we have coming in, period. Why is that concept so hard to understand? Doesn't matter if it's Republican or Democrat...the government is on a spending spree with YOUR money. The governement is so out of touch with reality it's crazy. The only thing the government should be doing is protecting our borders and protrecting our country from attack with our military. Period. Everything else they are doing causes red tape, more government and more opportunity for the government to spend money that is not theirs. Sheesh. When we are spending $4B PER DAY (oh yeah, borrowing 65% of each dollar we spend)....something is terribly wrong. It's a good thing we citizens don't live like that...or it'd be a lot worse.

Whadda choice when ole' eye of Newt with the Tiffany line of credit pops up, like Bozo the Clown, to a runoff with Mitt? Spare us, please. The Republicans had a very poor vetting process – I mean, really, Michelle gloats over 100 foster kids but denigrates our right to life by trying to kill fresh air and clean water? Hermie loves the touchy feely approach to CEOdom? Rick belongs only in PA, not in the national spotlight. And Ron Paul totters about, decrying any and all foreign aid and close our bases when the guy came of age during the Cold War when deterrence became the watchword and should remain so? I will vote for Romney if it comes down to him or Obama. As Obama has been a disaster, just as I thought he would be. It will be scary to have another 4 years of BHO as his plan is to collapse the whole American system and at the rate he is going Obama will have us in debt to the tune of 20 trillion dollars which is unsustainable. You claim Obama is an elitist yet you support candidates that are ultra rich and wouldn't know how to live like the majority of us, you say you want an "outsider" but are now supporting a guy that was a former (and disgraced) Speaker of the House and another that has been running for President for the past six years or so. Aparently, all the GOP candidates flunked biology (among other things based on their astounding collective intellectual prowess). YOUR HEART IS IN THE MIDDLE OF YOUR CHEST, IDIOTS!

Newt vs Obama in a debate....Obama gets slaughtered

That's funny, truly it is. There is so much material now to show that Newtered - in his quest to be the opposite of Obama in all things - is a flip-flopper supreme, only topped by the well-lubricated weathervane called Willard.
"Right-wing social engineering" along with Newton's ever-shifting positions on Libya (only thing consistent was he was consistently wrong) will not allow him to have any traction in any setting with Obama. Govt shutdown of the 90's?? Was that Newtie and Blowfish? Yup, sure was.
Newt is a legend in his own mind (and yours too apparently). Thanks for the laughs on a Monday!!

I checked the schedule. Two weeks from now Santorum will be the leader with a 3 point lead. The tea party wants to throw everyone out of office, just didn't realize they were only up for a two week term limit.

I think Herman Cain's problem is not so much that he harassed those women, but more that the American people are starting to see through his game. I can see Cain as the kind of guy who would do the kinds of things he's been accused of, but I am extremely skeptical of the women accusing him now when he's running for president. It smacks of shameless opportunism. Unfortunately for Cain, he cannot level that charge against him because it would be like the pot calling the kettle black. His entire campaign is nothing more than an orchestrated series of events to put him in a position where he can eventually bow out of the presidential race and make a fortune in speaking engagements, book deals, and maybe even a contract with Fox News. It worked for Sarah Palin and Donald Trump; it can work for Herman Cain. It's self-promotion at its worst. And even if the Cain campaign ends today, he will still be raking in the money hand over fist because he knows how to manipulate the right people. Welcome to America. This is what we've become.

Huntsman is by far the smartest of the bunch and is more qualified in both leadership and foreign affairs. Above all he is a moderate which is what America needs now. No more off the wall Tea Party ideas. Plain common sense is what this country needs

What shocks me is that there is anyone out there at all who still supports Rick Perry. His numbers have dropped ... but not that much ... Regardless of his idealogy (which is bad enough) he comes across as mentally challenged, to put it politely. The line up of candidates reminds me of the bar scene in the original Star Wars movie. What a bunch of trolls.

As I said in China this spring, there is no place for abuse in what must be considered the family of man. There is no place for torture and arbitrary detention. There is no place for forced confessions. There is no place for intolerance of dissent." "While we walked through the Rotunda. I explained to President Jiang how the roots of American rule of law go back more than 700 years, to the signing of the Magna Carta. The foundation of American values, therefore, is not a passing priority or a temporary trend." Newt Gingrich

Newt was seen singing after the debate:

    I feel pretty
    Oh so pretty
I feel pretty, and witty and bright
    And I pity
Any girl who isn't me tonight

I am voting for Ron Paul no matter if he runs on the Rupublican or Libretarian ticket. I am sick of all that is DC and I am going to vote for the guy that has warned us of what we are dealing with today for the last 30 years. I dont care if he can win or not, that will be determined. I however will never vote for the lesser of two evils again. Ron Paul 2012

Don’t Poo Poo Newt so quickly. He will kill Obama in debates.....A real intellectual against a prompter reader. The way society is today, the only thing that will matter is what they see on TV just before going to vote for the next presidential, and that will be the debates.

    Poo poo.
Donald thought he could match wits one on one with our President....he got roasted hours before Osama got toasted.
Family values....What'll it be, slim? Right wing social engineering, anyone? Or how about we talk about budget showdowns, that end up in shutdowns? Contract on America indeed. Newt, a sterling record to run from... oops - on.

The Republicans are going from bad to worse. Really, maybe they should just sit this one out, as none can hold a candle to President Obama.

For those of you who seem to think the race for the Republican nomination is a joke – I remind you of the last Democratic race. Check out the mud they threw at each other. It too was a 3 ring circus. Of course we don't want to forget about John Edwards. Joe got the V.P. job and Hillary got the Sec. State job so they forgot how they tried to convince America Obama wasn't right for the job – seems they were right.

    @ Jarod

Ya know, all this means is that we will be hearing about Newts problems/infidelity, newest mistress etc and then Santorum or Paul will surface as the next contestants on "Name that Republican candidate". In the end, it'll be a Romney/Christie ticket versus an Obama/Biden match up. Any takers?

    Yes.

Romney is a stiff by all accounts. His biggest problem SHOULD he win (and he won't) would be to find a VP who would not over shadow him. Having Christie as a VP would be too much for Romney as Christie has life and knows how to relate to people – something Romney knows nothing about. The TP would only be using Romney to oust the black man and then they would use Christie to oust Romney make no mistake about that. In 2016 Romney would be sent packing.

    Obama 2012.
