Romney mail hits South Carolina

Bettendorf, Iowa (CNN) - South Carolina voters received a lengthy fundraising plea from former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney over the weekend, a sign that the Republican presidential candidate is ever-so-slightly upping his efforts in the first southern primary state.

The four-page mail piece, penned under Romney's name and provided to CNN by a Republican in Columbia who received it on Monday, says that "America is desperate for strong focused, fiscally responsible leadership."

"Our economy is struggling," reads the letter, the first mailing from the Romney campaign to hit the state. "And South Carolina has been hit particularly hard by the recession."

"I am humbled by the support I am receiving from all over the country, but in order to run a successful national campaign, I will need to build a strong grassroots campaign team in South Carolina," the mailing reads.

The mailing touches on Romney's record as government of Massachusetts and on the "moral tragedy" of the economy under President Barack Obama, particularly an unemployment rate over 9%.

"Liberals should be ashamed that they and their policies have failed these good and decent Americans!," the letter blares.

Romney made just his sixth campaign visit to the state on Tuesday and has done nothing until now in the way of paid advertising or mail.

But even without a large organizational presence in the state, no candidate has so far emerged as a viable mainstream alternative to Romney, leading Palmetto State GOP insiders to see an opening for Romney in the state - even though the conservative bastion has long been suspicious of him and his record in Massachusetts.

I live in SC. I think I might sign up to volunteer so Romney might have a better chance of winning the primary here.

(Truth is – he doesn't have a shot of winning the national election. In the primaries he is the ultimate vote splitter.)

Where do I get my yard sign?????

I wish that I lived in South Carolina right now--I would gladly/proudly help to assist the next President of the United States in 2012!!

Romney is intelligent, and a business/financial genius. He is a class act, and will make a GREAT President!!

If Romney wins the nomination, Obama will be defeated in 2012.

The majority of Independents have made it clear in all state/national polls--they will support/vote for Romney over Obama!!

And, the Independents are the largest voting block, and they will decide the 2012 elections.

Mitt Romney for President in 2012!!! It is now time to put intelligence/experience into our White House!!

Why is Mitt Romney is unfit to be POTUS?
Because he wants to go to war against Iran. Because he wants to privatize Social Security and Medicare. Because he wants to eliminate Medicare. Because he wants to dismantle the education system that built this country's workforce. Because he say anything that he thinks you want to hear. Because his policies are for hire to the highest bidder.

@Woman In California – how you know ? you met the devil ? He might be your best buddy with all comments you have posted in the last couple of weeks. The only truth is that Romney is the person to lead the country. He has proven it and he has principles that people do not really look at. He is the person that he can't move on until he solves a problem, he is the person that if he sees something wrong, he wont go away until it is corrected, he is the person that can't see someone else helpless. You just have to know Mitt to see it. When Perry needed help with the third program he will cut, it was Romney go said EPA, to help Perry. After for a second time he also needed help with the Second program, it was Romney who said Commerce. It is something people do not see. He is a Family man and with good principles. He is the person that will rather not get paid for 20+ years at different positions he has held. He is the man !

The truths we cling to are highly dependent upon our point of view. To some people, getting the current guy out of the White House is in their ultimate best interest, and a task of the highest priority.

@Suzyn, I think it would be great if you went to SC and supported him. This intelligent businessman will be happy to let you train employees from overseas to take over your current job. He is a class act... working people in India and China call him Sugar Daddy.

@Suzyn, really that is your conclusion for the man who sent jobs overseas to get richer. You better rethink who you are casting your vote for. This man is nothing but a flip-flopper. Which ever way the wind blows at the time he is going in that direction. Mitt is a coward pure and simple.

Know what is REALLY sad? People who happen to think they know what other people's best interests are.

The only thing Romney's record proves is that he doesn't know how to help others. Only that he is very good at looking out for his own *personal* best interests.

When Romney suggested "EPA" to Perry, he was making a mockery out of Perry. Romney knew all too well that Perry was looking for "Energy". Romney wasn't being the benevolent being you seem to think he is. He was throwing bricks, not life preservers, at a drowning man.

Did you know.........That while Romney was Governor of Massachusetts, that he worked for free?

Each year while Governor of Massachusetts, Romney and his Lt. Governor both donated their salaries to charity every year!

Mitt Romney is definitely the person that we need in the White House to save our economy/country.

What is really sad are the people who allow themselves to be told/taught what to think, and what is in their best interests.

@Lolo – He has given up so much more to help others than what he could have made. He rejected to get paid as governor of MA. He rejected to get paid when he was at the Olympics. He rejected to get paid over stocks in a company who promoted rated "R" movies. and it keeps adding on.

Remember Romney laid off a lot of people so he added to the 9% employment rate. It does not matter if you laid off one person you put somebody in the unemployment ranks. So if I was Obama I would tell him that the people you laid off did you help them find a job Romney. You can't complain if you have laid off workers yourself.

  21. The Greedy Old Pigs have declared class war on US!

What America "desperately needs" is a GOBP that renounces its failed policies and obstructionism and instead gets to work on behalf of average Americans instead of the 1%ers.

If they take Obama Health Care bill to the Supreme Court then he should remind the state that they are the ones who demand people get car Insurance. People don't want a mandate on Health Insurance but the States mandate that you have car Insurance. If I was Obama I would tell these people to get rid of the madate for each state requring Car Insurance.
