Bachmann: Gingrich was paid to 'influence' Republicans for Freddie Mac

Webster City, Iowa (CNN) - As Newt Gingrich denies he was paid to lobby Republicans for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, fellow Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann on Wednesday challenged Gingrich's denial.

"Whether former Speaker Gingrich made $300,000 or whether he made $2 million, the point is that he took money to also influence senior Republicans to be favorable toward Fannie and Freddie," Bachmann said after a campaign event in Webster City, Iowa.

The congresswoman was referencing payments to the Gingrich Group - amounts between $1.6 million and $1.8 million, CNN has confirmed. The payments, first reported by Bloomberg, were made from 1999 to 2002 and 2006 to 2008.

In recent days Gingrich has steadfastly denied he lobbied the agency amid the subprime mortgage crisis, saying instead he offered advice as a "historian" and that his group offered "strategic advice."

Yet Bachmann cast an unfavorable light on Gingrich's actions.

"While he was taking that money, I was fighting against Fannie and Freddie," Bachmann said.

The congresswoman also lumped Gingrich in with her other GOP rivals, saying that each would not be able to claim higher ground, on some issues, in debates against President Barack Obama.

"Whether it's Freddie and Fannie or whether it's being against the Wall Street bailout, on every single issue, that's important to the voters in this upcoming election, I take every issue off the table with Barack Obama," Bachmann said. As she often does, the congresswoman talked about "flip-flopping" and one candidate creating the blueprint for "Obamacare" - both references to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.

"I'm the only candidate, in the entire field, that doesn't have any issue of compromise with President Obama…I'm consistent and they won't find any policy surprises in my background," Bachmann said.

Aside from the fact that she was a democrat who worked for Jimmy Carter, of course. And, let's be honest, how much money from the Government has her family received through subsidies? Where is you're high ground there?

Politicians are sound-bite machines. They rely on a high percentage of ill-informed listeners. Democrats are definitely guilty of playing this game, but no where near as well (as devious) as Republican politicians. Sound-bites like "Christianity is threatened" and "they're gonna raise your taxes", really wake up the idiots who basically get all of their information from FOX News >> USA's version of 'Ministry of Propaganda' (Nazi Germany) and USSR's Polit Bureau.
So, Newt will continue to spout he's clean even though he's one of the very dirtiest.
I am so sick of the absolute idiotic minions that FOX News spawns.. and they all talk like Bill Riley.. pretentiousness does not hide the fact that what's spewed from your mouth is pure pollution. You're sick.

Gingrich is a hibitual liar and flip flopper. He is like a whirling dervish who tries to talk above his misguided GOP/Tea Party base.

Keep on imploding GOP and Bachman will win the nomination. I hope they only have 1 debate, Obama will bury her on the intro. GOP no longer stands for Grand Old Party does it. The "fat lady" is singing and your party is over.

CNN Politics just confirmed & reported:

"Freddie Mac confirmed to CNN that Gingrich was a consultant and NOT a lobbyist."

"Gingrich was consulted about Freddie’s efforts to become more transparent about “risk and capital management” procedures, risk information disclosure, and how those efforts would be received in Congress, specifically by Republicans, according to a former official who worked for Freddie Mac during both of his stints."

Consistent, no compromise...sounds good for the Tea Party/GOP base, but that won't fly in the general election.

lately Bachmann has been doing great work for the DNC going after her fellow 2012ers even in ads on television. It's kind of like "if I can't win the GOP nomination then NOBODY WILL!!!" I have to admit that this is the first time Bachmann has done something I find really entertaining.

The worse her numbers get, the more shrill and antagonistic she becomes. She was once a figurehead for the TP's, but now she's only good for comedy relief.

This candidate is desperate to make an issue out of anything. These races are about how to fix the problems of the country. No one gives a darn what her opinion is on the bad judgment of another candidate. That is up to us voters. Her opinion is not telling us voters what she would do. It tells us that she desperate for attention

Wonder TITAINIUM woman herself. A woman of impeccable character. Liberals cannot stand before her wisdom on the issues so they resort to insults and being crass. It will be delightful; when she becomes president in 2012; to see the migration of liberals to katmandu or in obamas case timbuktu.

it is very easy to be consistent Mrs, Bachman when you do nothing but complain, pass no bills, enact no laws, forge no treaties....just complain....Yes, Mrs. Bachman you are indeed the best complainer on the hill and the least effective legislator.

"I'm the only candidate, in the entire field, that doesn't have any issue of compromise with President Obama…I'm consistent and they won't find any policy surprises in my background," Bachmann said.

Meaning that she is the only one who has been and is consistently WRONG. Better than that of course is that we have arrived at the point where the GOP begin to eat their own. You couldn't make this stuff, it makes for great TV.
