(CNN) - Notorious anti-tax crusader Grover Norquist said Democrats who've blamed him for the super committee's bipartisan budget gridlock are simply lying.
The president of Americans for Tax Reform encouraged Republican members of the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction to sign a pledge that binds them to resist raising taxes as they work to find $1.2 trillion dollars in deficit-cutting measures by Wednesday, but on CNN's "American Morning," he said the pledge was between the country and its congressmen, and not with him.
Programming note: GOP presidential candidates face off at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday, November 22, in the CNN Republican National Security Debate in Washington, D.C.
Democratic Sen. Patty Murray called Norquist out Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union" saying his name came up too often during super committee negotiations.
"As long as we have some Republican lawmakers who feel more enthralled with a pledge they took to a Republican lobbyist than they do to a pledge to the country to solve the problems, this is going to be hard to do," she said.
Norquist fired back Monday.
"The senator is not telling the truth," he argued.
"For the congressmen and senators who signed the taxpayer protection pledge, they and the American people know the pledge is from them to the voters of their district and their state."
And although he admitted, "they have tried to say I'm the reason Republicans won't raise taxes, that's not nonsense," Norquist directed blame back at Democrats saying, "The Democrats want higher taxes. That's off the table."
"It's been off the table for a year," he continued. "The Democrats are a little hard of hearing."
Defending his role in promoting the pledge, first signed by President Ronald Reagan in 1986, Norquist insisted again, "The pledge that congressmen and senators make is not to me despite what Reid and other Democrats pretend. When they say that, let's use the kind word. It's not true. It's a lie."
this man should be tried for treason and summarily executed at dawn for the damage he is doing to our great nation. yeah great grooooooover-give the rich more money–starve the poor–cut the educational programs so the exceedingly wealthy can have bigger planes and faster cars....how about our servicemen? they will bear the brunt of this mans diabolical plan to destroy the middle and lower classes....this man is satan incarnate....absolutely horrible...it's terrifying...and most of america doesn't even know he exists...
Ok, i'll say it again, in order to reduce the debt, you have to have more money going in than going out. a "balanced" budget will not lower the debt. Even if the budget deficit was eliminated, the debt will remain as long as there's no surplus. the only reasonable way to handle the debt is to increase taxes AND reduce spending. Any politician who advocates a 1 sided solution is engaged in class warfare and doesn't really care about the mounting debt. Anyone who suggests that cutting spending and cutting revenues will help needs to sit in on a 2nd grade math class. If every dollar you cut in spending is matched with a dollar in lost revenue, you are still running a deficit and increasing the debt. if you play with the ratio of spending cuts to tax cuts, you will need to have significantly more cuts to spending than cuts to taxes in terms of percentage just to balance the budget, which again, won't help the debt.
It's time to get real, If federal spending is lowered significantly, that would place the burden on the states or allow a lot of people to stave to death. states that have balanced budget amendments will be forced to raise taxes on people. if they choose not to, then roads and bridges will crumble, police won't be able to patrol the streets, houses will burn because the fire department doesn't have the funds...u know this is a bleak picture so i'm going to stop. I just hope that if things actually go in this direction that the republicans are right about the Gods of Big Business blessing the country. otherwise, bowing at the alter of big business will just seem silly.
And while i'm at it, can some of my conservative friends tell me a single time before 2001 when any civilized nation in the world went to war and didn't raise taxes to fund that war? (Remember, the key word is Civilized.)
Norquist is a confirmed illegal money-launderer and panderer to the nut cases who cut taxes and borrowed us into this hole. He is a guilty party more than once over and all his hand wringing will neither alter the truth nor exonerate him and his kind for the destruction they have wrought on this country's economy. But the 1% wil not suffer until the destruction of middle class is complete and there is no one to work for them or pay takes to prop them up.
Someone should check out Grover Norquist. David Horowitz, says: “On the basis of the evidence assembled here, it seems beyond dispute that Grover Norquist has formed alliances with prominent Islamic radicals who have ties to the Saudis and to Libya and to Palestine Islamic Jihad, and who are now under indictment by U.S. authorities. Equally troubling is that the arrests of these individuals and their exposure as agents of terrorism have not resulted in noticeable second thoughts on Grover’s part or any meaningful effort to dissociate himself from his unsavory friends.” We should also investigate Norquist's wife, Samah Norquist.
Norquist wouldn't know the truth if it beat him over the head.
My Repo congressional delegation has signed the pledge. I have pledged to actively act against them at every opportunity.
The U.S. Treasury needs to reprint all our currency with the faces of Norquist and all the "Madoffs" of the world so at least, we know what it represents. That way when we spend our money or unwillingly donate it, we will know it's going for a great cause.
It's pretty amazing that Republicans are ideological slaves to this nutball. Unfortunately, our entire nation will suffer because of this bizarre anti-tax extremism. How many JOBS did the Bush tax cuts create again? Oh yeah...minus MILLIONS. Tragedy.
No Grover, the Dems aren't lying and neither are the American people. You do NOT represent the views of the majority of the voting public nor do you have the authority or credibility to speak as if you do. For all those representaives and senators that have signed Grover's little pledge I have some news for you. "We the People" are speaking and you have deliberately chosen to ignore our voice. As of this point you are in fact malfeasent and our anger is rising by the hour. When American history classes teach the subject of the "Second American Revolution" twenty years from now guess where your names will be discussed. King George the III my a$$, the biggest threat our nation will ever have to face didn't come from outside, but our own supposed representatives and archaic government. It's clear to us now what this is really about and it's time to pay the price. Watch what happens in the next few months leading up to the elections, voting out obstructionists will be the least of the changes coming!
didn't even Speaker Boehner not want to acknowledge Norquist existence? He was trying to distance himself and his party from ol' Grover so who is REALLY lying here?
Brilliant how Grover has made himself the de facto leader of the GOP. This is commendable seeing as how it seemed impossible to unseat Rush from that position.
Reagan didn't raise taxes, he called them Revenue Enhancers. At least he cared to do the right thing with another name.
it goes to prove the fact that there is a mafia mentality in Washiington, you are either with us or we will put a horses head in your bed.............did'nt anyone in Washington learn anything from the Cheney era ? If you want to learn how scary Cheney was, look at the Frontline website and pull up the story on Cheney. This guy is just as scary because he has the ability to get the morons in Washington to follow him. Do they not have a mind of their own ????? the sheep that signed the pledge will be blackballed if they cross him and his pledge or vote against what he wants...........
Of course he's going to be against the Democrats. Why is this a story? He's a big reason for the stalemate in Washington that is crippling our government.
Since Mr. Norquist is so insistent that the Republicans adhere to his theories and he likes to run his piehole so much, why doesn't he stand for Congress? He would then have a legitimate forum and not be a sideliner or a sideshow. Until he is willing to put up or shut up, maybe the latter should be his course of action.
There is something very wrong here, fundamentally wrong. Politicians – voted by the people – swear allegiance to this man and his pledge BEFORE their duty to serve those who elected them. I hate to say it, but this is borderline treasonous as far as I am concerned. Those leaders that signed this and then went to office are telling the people that they are part of a faction and place that faction above the interests of the country. That is treason, I am sorry to say.
When our country is in financial trouble, when there is work to be done, NOTHING should be OFF the table.
Norquist is the one peddling the pledge and the one who the repugnants are afraid of. The majority want a balance of legit cuts and revenue increases.
Dont blame this guy. The elected officials who signed this pledge chose to do it.
Don't blame the elected officials who signed this pledge, they were elected into office by people who knew they had signed it.
Don't blame the people who elected these officials, they got what they wante.
Blame the 63% of people who failed to vote in the 2010 elections. Their apathy allowed a vocal minority to bring us to this state of affairs.
IF YOU DIDN"T VOTE IN 2010, YOU HAVE ABDICATED YOUR RIGHT TO COMPLAIN.
Just look at Norquist ????/ Is this the face of a sane man ???? I mean REALLY
What an arrogant POS he is. Who made him king and to decide what is on and off the freakin table?
