Romney names possible running mate

killough.mugshot.4

(CNN) – GOP presidential front-runner Mitt Romney on Monday dropped a name for a possible running mate should he secure his party's nomination.

"There are probably 15 names of people, including (New Hampshire Sen.) Kelly Ayotte," Romney said in an interview on Fox News. "I mean, there are terrific Republicans in the Senate, in the House, in governors' offices."

Programming note: GOP presidential candidates face off at 8 p.m. ET Tuesday, November 22, in the CNN Republican National Security Debate in Washington, D.C.

Ayotte, who was sitting next to Romney at the time of the interview, threw her support behind Romney this weekend in a highly coveted endorsement.

The first-term senator was elected in 2010 with 60% of the vote and is seen as a strong conservative on issues of finance and defense. A former state attorney general, Ayotte voted against the debt deal hammered out in Congress this summer.

Asked who she thinks Romney should consider for vice president, Ayotte pointed to names already floating around in GOP circles: Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

She also pointed to Gov. Susana Martinez of New Mexico as a strong candidate.

While Romney has been criticized from the right for being too moderate, Ayotte said her main focus was electing a Republican who could oust President Barack Obama from the White House.

"(Romney) is the person who can lead our country, change the direction, bring those conservative principles that we need to the White House and most importantly make sure that Barack Obama is a one-term president," Ayotte said in the interview.

The former Massachusetts governor has remained steady in the top tier of the GOP presidential field, but a new CNN/ORC International Poll this week showed Romney falling slightly behind former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

And while Romney was hesitant to list any more possible VP contenders, the candidate said there's no short list of potential names.

"You've got extraordinary men and women," Romney said. "We have a very deep bench."

– CNN's Rachel Streitfeld contributed to this report.

Willard's trying to court the women' vote. Too bad he flip flops so much on abortion. No matter who Willard's running mate is, he'll still lose. I guess he's not that good at math or just oblivious to facts. His poll numbers don't move and they won;t move. True TEAvangelicals are not going to vote for Willard.

America, do you want a Chairman-In-Chief, or do you want a Commander-In-Chief? That is what the general election is going to come down to. Do you want someone who is going to return to ideologically driven policies of the Bush Administration, protecting the wealthy at the expense of the middle class? Or do you want someone who answers directly to the middle class?

BIG mistake for Willard to try and appease the TP crowd so early in the game. It is way too soon for him to be talking potential vice presidents - not to mention boxing himself into a TeaParty frenzy he won't be able to dig himself out of in the general election. Absolutely a mistake he will undoubtedly regret the day he gives his concession speech ... and every day after, I suspect.

The thoughts of any one of these republican buffoons becoming President is beyond ludicrous. The flip-flopping of Romeny, the hypocrisy of Newt, the phillandering of Cain, the stupidity of Perry, the radicalism of Bachmann, Santorum and Paul all make for quite a menu of the absurd. The only one of them with any real credibility is John Huntsman and he is just being ignored. I will be voting for President Obama because the thoughts of one of these jesters becoming President is too far beyond the pale.

A page taken out of the McCain playbook: He's pandering to the women's vote especially, but to all the other voting demographics as well. That worked for McCain for about a month or so, then it fell apart.

I'm sure his handlers thought it an excellent strategic move to float this info in an attempt to win votes by hinting who his VP choice might be. If his campaign peeps think they are being the vanguards in this very calculating move, then they are underestimating the voting public in the most insulting way.

If you are Kelley Ayotte and you believe this, I have a bridge (needing repair) to sell you.

Romney has few right wing conservative credentials. This headline: "9/15/10 at 2:41 PM Comment ‘Granite Grizzly’ Kelly Ayotte Narrowly Beats Tea Party in New Hampshire" would suggest that Ms. Ayotte is not going to mobilize the right- wing conservative base either.

If he nominates a woman, it will be someone like Nikki Haley. If it is a man, perhaps someone like Haley Barbour, without the soft on racism storyline. Ayotte doesn't have a chance.

He really thinks that he has NH and Mass locked up already just like the nomination. He figures since the first primary is right around the corner and he has not made any huge blunders, he can just coast right through 2012. He figures that Republicans might as well get use to the fact that he will be the nominee. He might be the nominee, but we Republicans should focus on winning the House and Senate and making sure the president either governs as a fiscal conservative or does'nt govern at all. I don't trust Mitt to handle the economy and I definitely would not trust him to lead our military or handle foreign policies. This man has no allegience to any government. It really doesn't matter who he says he'll pick. America will correct the massive, economy-destroying mistake of the 2010 elections and the Republicans and conservative Dems will be packing up their offices to make room for sensible people who are able to compromise and do the work that's needed without being beholden to Grover Norquist or any other extreme PACs. We sure won't put a GOTP in the oval office.

And I may add that this is the first time in our nation's history that a First Lady was booed at a political or non political event. But I'll remember to pray for these people and when they sid down with their love ones this Thanksgiving, I just hope they remember to tell their kids that they're most thankful for booing the First Lady.

Anyone who lays their cards on the table early in this race is not running an effective campaign.

We all know–or at least should know–that the Vice President is supposed to be the person you're throwing out into the spotlight as your possible successor. Republicans better get with the picture: As it so happens, the only kids on the block for 2016 are Chris Christie and Marco Rubio, and possibly even John Huntsman. That's it. They are the only hope for the Republican Party's survival.

Now, lets not be naive...There is no hope for the Republican Party.
Eight years of damaging policies and three years of Tea Baggers has defamed the Republicans and the effects will last for a loooong time. Democrats will control the White House at least until 2024. Our future will wind down to whether Americans can sacrifice their ideologies–put their country before their ideologies–and vote Democrat. Unless we have Democrats holding majority in the House and Senate for the next twelve years after next year's election, no problems will be resolved.

I believe that only actual small businesses are eligible for the tax credit. There is a ceiling that defines gross sales.

Democratic Presidents sign tax credits for business for hiring unemployed vets out of work for extended periods.
Republican Presidents sign tax breaks for businesses that let them deduct foreign taxes off of their US obligations.

Four/Door: "These are tax breaks for the same filthy rich business owners he complains get too many tax breaks."

The tax breaks the President and the majority of Americans are the ones that reward American companies that ship American jobs overseas. Providing incentives to American companies to hire American vets is completely in keeping with the President's commitment to better our country.

BTW, over 61% of millionaires and billionaires in this country WANT to pay more in taxes, because not only do they know they've been enjoying the lowest tax rates in 50 years, but that paying their fair share would greatly help our country.

But do the "will of the people" Repubs listen? Heck no, because they are serving a select 400 few (including the Koch brothers) who are putting party and their own interests ahead of our nation's well-being.

NOBODY asked for an immediate $1T tax increase. Rather, short-term spending measures and tax relief followed by long-term revenue and tax increases is what has been called for. "No kidding. Funny though, you'll hear "Ronald Reagan" this that and the other thing though."

What's REALLY funny is Ronald Reagan wouldn't be allowed in the Repub party today, what with his tax raising (11 times during his presidency), negotiating with terrorists (the Ayatollah Kohmeni, to be exact), cutting and running after the Beirut barracks bombing, not wearing his faith on his sleeve and trying to "out-Christian" everyone else, the growth in federal jobs during his terms (over 60,000; contrast that to government payrolls shrinking by 373,000 during Clinton’s presidency), and the pesky little FACT that the national debt went from $700 billion to $3 trillion, and the U.S. transformed from the world’s largest international creditor to its largest debtor.

And don't forget Reagan while governor expanded Medi-Cal (California's Medicaid). He also established the Air Resources Board to intervene in the market and fight smog (so much for deregulation and letting the market "correct itself").

Speaking of the environment, Reagan, that tree-hugger, signed more wilderness-protections laws than any president before or since.

All you gun nuts: Reagan was a staunch backer of the Brady Bill, urging Congress in 1991 to pass it "without delay."

Last but not least, all you teabaggers, Reagan passed the Immigration Reform and Control Act in 1986, which eventually granted amnesty to 2.7 million illegal immigrants. The kicker: he continued to speak out for immigration rights after leaving office.

Reagan wouldn't pass the Repubs "purity" tests – but that won't stop all these GOP yahoo candidates from invoking St. Reagan's name. Guess they just all figure their base are a bunch of idiots.

On the same day the Supercommittee bailed out because they could not get the $1 trillion tax increase he begged for he signed a bill to give tax breaks to businesses for hiring veterans. These are tax breaks for the same filthy rich business owners he complains get too many tax breaks. He has a tough time staying on-message, doesn't he?"

NOBODY asked for an immediate $1T tax increase. Rather, short-term spending measures and tax relief followed by long-term revenue and tax increases is what has been called for. Of course, give that you have an overly simple mind, I am not suprised to find your oversimplifying it in a very poor attempt at selling the perception of hypocrisy.

There are probably 15 names of people, including (New Hampshire Sen.) Kelly Ayotte," Romney said in an interview on Fox News. "I mean, there are terrific Republicans in the Senate, in the House, in governors' offices."

The entire purpose to slipping that line in was because his campaign thought that it'd generate extra publicity for her endorsement of him, provided that journalists weren't quick-witted enough to realize how cynically he's playing them.

The same Marco Rubio? That Talks Big but Fails to Deliver?

Before the March 2000 session, Rubio was hardly the scorching conservative who would later woo Tea Partiers nationwide. He said he'd focus on supporting early education and community policing. And he wasn't particularly passionate about cutting spending. In his first three years, he supported adding a $4 surcharge to cruise tickets to fund a Marlins stadium and a $1.2 million earmark to build new bike paths in his district

Marco Rubio Really Admires Dead Racist Jesse Helms

So, Marco Rubio is going around calling America "weakened." He blames it on Social Security, Medicaid and Medicare.

spent thousands with GOP credit card

Records show Rubio sent payments to American Express totaling $13,900 for his personal expenses during his tenure as House speaker. But those payments were not made monthly. He made no contributions to the bill during a six-month stretch in 2007, records show.

Ayotte was sitting next to Romney when this statement was made in response to a question he had been given. He didn't say she was his VP pick. He was kindly and politely trying to let her and her constituents know that he held her in high regard. It is called people skills. Alternatively, he could have done as many on this board seem to have think he should have done... "Nope, haven't picked my VP candidate... Ayotte thanks for the endorsement... nice knowing you." ___________________________________________________________________________________________
Read the details of Toomey's "compromise". It was closing of what he called loopholes but in reality, it didn't close loopholes for the high-rollers. Democrats wanted to close real loopholes AND lose the Bush tax cuts for the rich. He didn't offer a single cent in increase in tax rates for the wealthy although they enjoy the lowest rates in 30 years – at a time when both entitlement cuts AND tax increases are required to reduce the deficit. Please... no more trickle-down economics crap. That is the Republican mantra but isn't supported by history. They had the Bush cuts when the economy went down the toilet. They had low rates when Ronald Reagan's spending drove us downhill – and caused George Sr. to call for a tax increase. Your "job creators" simply shipped the jobs offshore and spent their mega-millions on toys.

Tax increases are the last thing the federal government and our economy need right now. If taxes increased $500 billion I guarantee you the Democrats would increase spending $500 billion, probably $600 billion because of the increased confidence that they could get more tax hikes.

It has to stop. Look where we are. $15 trillion in debt. The economy is in the dump with corporate tax rates where they are now, which are the highest in the world. Game over. November 2012. It's time to start managing our federal government.

Four Door: “$1 trillion in job-crushing tax increases.”

If tax breaks resulted in job creation, then why haven't the last 10 YEARS of tax breaks resulted in jobs HERE IN THE U.S.?

And if taxing corporations kills jobs, then how do you explain the 40-year economic expansion 1940-1980, when corporate taxes were much higher than they are now?

You really need to wake up and admit that the American corporations that keep yammering on about needing more tax cuts have been using their extra cash to ship American jobs overseas and have no intention of creating jobs here.

A deep bench, right. The GOP junior varsity lineup can't compare with Obama this election cycle. Evangelicals won't come out in droves for Romney because of the Mormonism xenophobia they have. They also won't come out in support of Newt because surprisingly he has a more tattered personal life than Clinton. Which leaves them to support the least knowledgeable of the "deep bench" Bachmann, Perry, or Cain. Paul is the best one pursuing the nomination but he'll be torpedoed by the establishment.

Mitt Romney is such a phony, his political positions have been all over the place. Nobody from either can trust anything he says because he constantly changes like the wind. I remember even at one debate back in the 90's with Kennedy how Romney threw Ronald Reagan under the bus and now he claims how great he was. Which is it? One minute Romney is pro-choice then he's pro-life, now he's a so called moderate, again which is it? Romney will say whatever he thinks people want to hear to the time as he only cares about votes and power. Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann made Mitt Romney look like a fool. Romney takes first prize for the biggest loser in the race 2nd is Rick Perry. Many Independents like myself flat out reject Mitt Romney and Rick Perry. I think Herman Cain and Michele Bachmann both won this debate. Newt Gingrich lost me with his amnesty approach to immigrantion and his support for the Dream Act which the American people especially us Independents also flat out reject and the fact that Newt wants to put Social Security on the stock market. I think that the Democratic Party should convince President Obama to step down and convince Hillary Clinton to run in his place for President in 2012. I know that if President Obama is running in 2012 he will probably lose because he lost Independents like me.

Expecting the social conservative right, which makes up the majority of the early primary voters for the republican field, to accept Mitt Romney is an exercise of the highest stupidity.

As a political philosophy, conservatism has all but kicked the chair out from under itself, after tying the noose around it's neck. It's much to fractured to come up with a coherent message, it's far too radical to find any acceptance among middle America, and it's far too wrong to be taken seriously by anyone with more than a high school degree.

I gleefully await the next GOP presidential concession speech. Nothing sweetens my day more than a snifter of Neo-Con tears.

Pulling the old McCain trick, eh?
    It won't work, Romney.

Romney is going to win the nomination…and he will lose to President Obama, unfortunately by a close margin. Take a drive through Red State America, as we saw during the 2008 campaign, where parents teach their children that they need to wear gloves ‘to touch the President’, and you will see why this margin will be so close. I will never understand why these same Poor Uneducated Whites will blindly vote Republican when it is ‘Socialist’ Democrats who make sure their food stamps and welfare checks are in their mailboxes on time.
Huntsman and Paul are the only Republicans on that stage that I can respect. Cheers to Paul’s approach regarding if/when Israel declares war on Iran.

Expat, If you were still here among us getting your information from Main Street instead of online or from the news media, you would understand how completely gone the Obama administration will be when Americans get to vote him out. His economic strategies have failed miserably one after the other, he has avoided any form of leadership at every chance and he relies on political games for every decision he makes. It's not a combination Americans want.
