Obama urges Congress to extend payroll tax cut

(CNN) - President Barack Obama on Monday said extending the payroll tax cut set to expire at the end of the year will help the nation's economic recovery.

"Our recovery is still fragile, and the situation in Europe has added to that uncertainty," Obama told reporters at the White House.

"Keep your word to the American people and don't raise taxes now," Obama said in what he called a message to Congress.

Obama also urged Congress to extend unemployment benefits set to expire at the end of the year, saying too many people remain out of work to deny them money that helps their families get by.

You are part of my everyday prayers, Mr. President, right after my family and prayers for our country.
Intensify the fight sir, they aim to take you down in 2012 and the country with you if it stands in their way.
    Obama 2012. Seriously America.

Mr. President, you need to take some real responsibility. And soon!!! You should be ashamed of yourself. For you it's all exclusively about politics and personal attacks. Never ever about America and its people.

Shame, shame. It's about time you ass(umed) full responsibility for your failures and those of your minions. You need to stop the blame game. The American people are on to you. You simply can't continue to blame the Republicans for all your foibles.

Will you listen!? I think not!!! On the other hand, if you really want to be reelected, you better start to better tune your hearing (listening skills) to the American people. Continuing to blame the Republicans will no longer work for most responsible/enlightened/working Americans.

The Obama administration is giving Republicans all the rope the need to politically hang themselves. Obama is asking for a tax cut *and* proposing a way to pay for it, which Republicans never do. Short sighted liberals think caving in to conservatives demands that the tax cuts be paid for is weakness. No, it isn't.

It's a trap because these cuts will be extended and paid for. It also plays in to the Obama administration strategy to request as much in cuts as possible, demanding mroe cuts than what Republicans have asked for. It comes to a cusp in 2012. By the time 2012 gets here, our budget will be completely "cut out". The "fat" should be gone.

When the fall debate comes up over the extending the BTCs for the wealthiest Americans, the debate will return to how do you pay for the tax cuts. Now the real cost of the BTCs will come to light, and Republicans will be forced to come up with cuts or allow them to expire.

But, we know that they cannot come with another $500B in cuts because the Obama administration strategy has been to push for cuts until no more cuts can be made. The "reasonable and responsible" administration even made spending cuts to advance their own tax cuts. Republicans will be hard pressed to defend extending the BTCs without cuts.

The President will win re-election. Not because he's at all good...but because the others are so much worse.

I only hope 5-years from now when the real leaders stand up it's not too late.

So this is all money being collected for social security, which is already operating in the red. What $100 BILLION in spending cuts is Obama proposing to compensate for this? Is he going to cut social security spending? yeah, right! Or does he intend to just whip out the China credit card once again? I get the distinct feeling that all Obama knows how to do is spend, not save, not cut.

Studies have shown over and over that the longer you give unemployment benefits, the longer people stay unemployed. He is turning unemployment into another long term government welfare program. If he gets re-elected can we expect the government to pay unemployment for another 4 years?? because one thing is for sure, unemployment is not going to improve as long as he is President.

You, sir, are the epitome of fragile! Best thing is for you to be voted out. Next best thing is a viable third party to emerge since the two party system is a scam being run on us for years.

@ Jerry you ned to get real. You talk of standing up and accepting blame but you never ask republicans to do the same. How easy it is for you to just point the blame on only one person. You show your ignorance to everything that is and has been going on.

"Studies have shown over and over that the longer you give unemployment benefits, the longer people stay unemployed. "

No they haven't. In fact, unemployment insurance consistently gets placed at the very top of th elist of efefctive means for stabilizing and helping get a receding economy back on track by shoring up demand. Wanna know what consistently gets listed as the least effective? That's right: tax cuts for the wealthy. This ain't no joke either...both CBO and the Dept. of Labor made these exact findings (and Dubya told the Dept. of Labor to do the study...just didn't like the findings...so no, it wasn't a liberal kunspurrissy).

What you tax, you get less of. Tax the rich, you get less capital for investment in the economy. The money goes to more investment friendly parts of the world. Tax business, prices go up to provide businesses with the profits they need to survive. YOU end up paying for this! YOU HAVE LESS!

So if you really want to screw this country over royally and GUARANTEE long term high unemployment, keep voting for tax increasing class warfare Democrats.

Demanding spending cuts is the conservative solution, not the first choice of liberals, but at least it is a choice and not a non-starter. Before all is said and done, I expect spending cuts will be solution that gets enacted. Have you considered what that means when the Bush Tax Cuts come for extension next year?

Of course, you have. You're already demanding spending cuts, and that nothing more gets put on the credit card. Good. Republicans are painting themselves into a corner, and the smart ones know. They are the ones grumbling about the Norquist Tax Pledge, and how it is handcuffing them.

Between the super-Committee and all of the other cuts Republicans are demanding *right now*, there will nothing left to cut to extend the BTCs. It is an unwinnable position. Like I said, smart conservatives see it coming. Why don't you?

We live in a consumer economy, all politicians know that. So why do Republicans keep calling the smallest segment of society the Job Creators. The true job creation comes when consumers spend and companies hire to meet demand. I don't care what the tax structure is, companies will hire when they need more employees! They will need more employees if consumers consume more. So $1500 in the pocket of someone making 50000K a year is bound to have some benefit.

Mr. President, I appreciate you reaching out to those fascists republicans, but you're wasting your time. If extending the payroll tax cut or extending unemployment benefits benefits you politically anyway, you can forget about it. Those TEApublicans know they're on the wrong side of this issue. They took a pledge to someone other than the American People. That's treasonous and they all should be voted out of office.

YOU have less? Don't you mean "We, the 1%" have less disposable income? Sorry, I don't buy into the argument that a *personal* tax cut somehow makes a difference on a *business* tax return. I have been encouraging others to ask the same question of conservatives. So far, no one has a been able to come up with a logical answer except to repeat some nonesense using the phrase "job creators.:

    >>>"Studies have shown over and over that the longer you give unemployment benefits, the longer people stay unemployed. "
    >>>No they haven't.

And I'm sure you can provide legitimate studies that prove what you say? Of course you can't. It is basic human nature that many will delay or put off taking a job if they have an existing money stream to tide them over. Some people out there actually game the system by working only long enough to collect unemployment over and over.

    >>>In fact, unemployment insurance consistently gets placed at the very top of th elist of efefctive means for

Ahhh yes, the Nancy Pelosi warped logic of "stimulus". This of course assumes everybody that collects unemployment has saved NOTHING or has NO other income earner in the family, or continues to spend at the same levels after lossing their job (only dumb Democrats do this). The usual nonsense UNPROVEABLE argument Democrats throw out there.

How is it the Grover Norquist says the payroll tax cuts are unpaid for but the Bush tax cuts are?? They are both tax cuts! So if you are going to let these expire then let the Bush tax cuts be reveresed since neither are paid for, right? Unless it is for the rich then the rules change, right GROVER NORQUIST?? Every Republican that signed his pledge needs to be voted out. Period!!

    --------------
That is not what Norquist said on the Sunday talk shows following Thanksgiving. I heard him to say on MTP that not extending the payroll tax cuts would be a tax increase, and that they would need to be paid for. He was never directly asked anything like your question above, although David Gregory came close.

I think Gregory asked an innocent sounding question that seemed to have not teeth. He asked about where is the funding coming from for the BTCs next year. Norquist more or less dodged the question by alluding to the fact that more business tax cuts and deregulation is needed to help economy.

  23. GROVER NORQUIST IS A ENEMY OF THE STATE

Any republican who signed a pledge to protect tax cuts for the rich should be branded a traitor and should be tried for treason. YOU, as elected officials, take an oath of office to uphold the Constitution of the Unites States of America, NOT an oath to Grover Norquist to protect tax breaks for the rich!!!

Everything in politics is about politics. Once you stop, then your political career is over.

Can you name one incident of Obama launching into a "personal attack" against someone? Can you? Can anyone? I know that type of sloganeering sounds good to the uninformed, but it sounds silly to those of us with degrees.
