Bookstore episode with child was 'reprehensible,' says Bachmann

(CNN) - GOP hopeful Michele Bachmann said Wednesday that a recent episode at a book signing, in which a young boy told her his gay mother "didn't need fixing," was "reprehensible."

"He obviously didn't want to say what he was put up to say, and I just think it's reprehensible when someone uses a little child to advance a political agenda," Bachmann said Wednesday on CNN's "John King, USA."

"That's what was going on in a book signing. I'd never do that to one of my children, and it's really unfortunate that this poor, little boy was used in that way."

The incident, which was recorded and has since received millions of views on YouTube, took place at a bookstore in South Carolina. The Minnesota congresswoman said it was clear the boy's mother goaded him into speaking to her.

In the interview Wednesday, Bachmann stood firm in her opposition to same sex marriage.

"I'm very unashamed, I believe that we should all be allowed to have our opinions respected, and I stand for marriage and marriage between a man and a woman," Bachmann said.

As for the current GOP frontrunner Newt Gingrich, Bachmann said the former House speaker had distracted voters from his record using finely-tuned language.

"He's very good at co-opting the conservative language, and he's using that conservative language, but his record completely belies his language," Bachmann said. "No one has been more the epitome of a Washington, D.C., insider than Newt Gingrich. He's taken over $100 million for influence peddling in Washington, D.C. His office is located on the Rodeo Drive of Washington which is K Street, and he's taken over $1.6 million to influence senior Republicans to keep the big mess at Freddie Mac going."

Bachmann continued, listing a host of issues she disagreed with Gingrich on.

"He's wrong on immigration, he's wrong on global warming, he was wrong on the $700 billion bailout, he was wrong on Libya. On issue after issue, his positions have hardly been conservative. He's had more in common with Barack Obama than he has with our conservatives. That's not what we can have for our nominee."

Just because the kid seemed a little awkward talking to a bug-eyed crazy woman, doesn't mean he was "put up" to talking to Bachmann.

Bachmann, doesn't get it today, and will not get it tommorrow.....even if you believe the mother put her son up to asking her that question......Bachmann, in your statement you are telling the children in same sex families that something is wrong with their parents....period........you are insulting, and admittingly shameless.....You DO NOT deserve to be POTUS

So trotting out your kids on stage doesn't further your political agenda?

Bachmann is still one of the most crazy candidates and that is saying a mouthful. BTW, the other candidates aren't far behind her.

Is that like bragging about your foster children? Where the heck are those kids the state paid you to care for. You are the one who is reprehensible.

First of all – how YOUNG is the boy?? A young boy could be 12 years old or 6 years old – 3 years or 15 years old.

►"He obviously didn't want to say what he was put up to say, and I just think it's reprehensible when someone uses a little child to advance a political agenda,"◄

How does Bachmann know that the young boy was put up to it? Did she ask him? Regardless of what Bachmann wants the world to believe what they should be – the world is NOT that and she should learn to deal with it!!

Obama 2012 because there is NO ONE else that knows how to Win the Future by uplifting the middle class!!!

If you want your opinions respected, you should respect the opinions of others who have a different viewpoint .

She is a witch, and if she was in charge during the Salom witch trials there would be no one left to tell about it. The hate in her towards science, compassion, and anything logical is unnerving. For someone like her to be able to make as much money as she does with the hate the she spews makes me loose faith in the world.

Apparently assistance and government subsidies are okay for Bachmann to get, but not those Americans who are elderly, poor, disabled, or unemployed Seems Bachman's husband doesn't have a problem with collecting money from insurance companies and medicare to "wish away" homosexuality. Hypocrites!!

This is the kind of republican that makes the party undesirable

God Bless that young child. And God Bless his Gay mother...

Bachmann is disgusting. I hope the voters in MN vote out this hate monger in the next election. There is no 'cure' for being gay – just like there is no cure for the pile of excrement that is Michelle Bachmann's character.

Doesn't suprise me a bit. Part of the homosexual agenda is the brainwashing of children. Good parents beware.

Sure Shelley. By the way how are your 23 former foster children that you bragged about a bazillion times?

The boy's right. His mother doesn't need fixing. YOU DO.

Why does Bachmann feel qualified to judge other peoples' lives and beliefs? She says "we should all be allowed are opinions respected" but shows no respect for anyone who disagrees with her. I hope someday she reads the Constitution of the United States and decides to follow our laws.

What I find "reprehensible" is Ms. Bachmann's reaction to the child....she withdrew from him as if she just found out he had the plague! As a potential Presidential candidate for the United States of America I would think, no I would hope, that she would conduct herself in a more appropriate manner. She should, as an adult, be able to think on her feet and at the very least acknowledge that the young boy even spoke to her....even if it was only to say "thank you for coming to see me today"....what must that boy think seeing an adult draw away from him with such fright in her eyes?? And, how does Ms. Bachmann know that the boy was coerced into saying anything by the parent? As we all know and are aware, children are subjected to and hear many things that go on around them these days and he may have made that statement to his parent and the parent thought it important enough for Ms. Bachmann to hear. It doesn't matter who believes in what regarding the issues of today, what matters is common decency and Ms. Bachmann did not show any sign of it towards this young boy. If this is how she is going to handle every comment or action that catches her off guard in her endeavor to become the leader of our country, and make assumptions without knowledge of truth, well....I for one am quite disappointed

"He obviously didn't want to say what he was put up to say, and I just think it's reprehensible when someone uses a little child to advance a political agenda," -says the woman that mentions her 23 foster children every single chance she gets, even when they have nothing to do with the question she's answering.

Sounds like she's got a lot of respect for differing opinions, doesn't it.

Does Michelle Bachman not get that for some people, these are not simply political issues, but their actual lives she is trying to legislate. Perhaps this child was put up to saying something, or maybe he developed his own opinion and wanted to share it. I imaging if a child came up to her supporting her bass ackwards opinions, she would find it just charming. She is such a joke. Glad she has no shot at ever being president.
