BREAKING: Senate Republicans block Democrats' payroll tax cut plan

(CNN) - Senate Republicans Thursday blocked a Democratic measure to extend the payroll tax cut and assess a new tax on income over $1 million to help pay for it.

The vote was 50-48. Sixty votes were needed for the measure to proceed.

The GOP is not going to bite the hand that feeds them (taxing the wealthy). If Obama can use his Executive Power to get this jobs plan passed he shouldn't wait another day. Just do It.

  2. Republican who supports President Obama

The GOP currently holding office should be recalled or voted out. This is not what I voted for and will certainly will not vote for a member of the GOP for many years to come until they are come to their senses. For those who wanted divided government – THANKS for NOTHING b/c nothing is happening in Washington. This is by far the least productive Congress in recent memory.

"and you wonder why congress has a approaval rating in single digits."

Have no doubt, that is a full-fledged feature of the GOP/Teatroll agenda and strategery...it's not a bug.

Vote the GOP out of every office they hold. Everyone must go out and vote in 2012. If there are consequences for harming the vast majority of Americans to protect the most privaledged among us, they might change their ways. The powerful can't buy our votes, which are stronger in the long run than their money.

@Terry,va – The reason it's 51-49 is that the GOP pushes a lot of social wedge issues, fearmongers, and spreads a lot of misinformation to get a very large number of Americans to vote against their own economic self interest. How does it feel to be a tool?

"I have an idea ... let's just force the rich to pay for EVERYTHING! My retirement, my medical bills, my clothes, my groceries, my car, my utilities, my football tickets, my vacations, ..."

Given that the GOP considers all the rich to be the "job creators" then your idea is already in place theoretically. It's called your salary. But you see, the problem is, the rich are so enamored of holding on to their riches with greedy little death grips that they've held average middle-class salaries stagnant for over 3 decades while they're own wealth and incomes skyrocketed, resulting in an actual decline of the buying power of the average middle-class salary, skyrocketing average household debt and a massive MASSIVE redistribution of the nation's wealth upwards. If the "rich" and "job creators" want to promise the entire country a nice raise, well, ummm, yeah...we won't be holding our breath. See, junior, the problem this all comes down to is this: even though they paid you your salary, they still think of that money as theirs, not yours. Think that one through.

Or, to put my response in a shorter version: it's such an inconvenience paying "the help" enough to live on, isn't it?

This is exactly what happens when you believe in anything a Donkey Republican tells you. They didn't hijack the Congress...STUPID impressionable overpaying tax paying Americans voted them into office in 2010 because they got tricked into believing that Obamacare was the root of all evil. Do you still believe that to be true? Vote every Republican out of office in 2012 and leave only one for the Republicans to beat up. This is the cost of your divided government people...NO VOICE FOR YOU WHEN REPUBLICANS ARE INCHARGE.

How much you want to bet that Pres. Obama will get blamed for Congress' low approval rating in the next election cycle?

"This election is about do you want food stamps and handouts VS. a job. Handouts vote for Obummie. People with respect for themself and want to work vote for the Repub."

So all the millionaires and billionaires (over 65%) who WANT their taxes raised are wrong? Folks like Warren Buffet, one of the richest men on the PLANET and a supporter of President Obama is wrong?

Terry, get over it. History and facts are on the side of President Obama's policies. Do a little research and you'll see that our country fairs better under Democratic administrations than Republican ones. Repubs always spend to much, redistributing the wealth upwards, playing fast and loose with our nation's well-being. Democrats put our financial house in order, invest in our people and our future and EVERYONE – across the income spectrum – benefits.

    THIS IS FACT!

Republicans, whose economic, military and foreign policies are all PROVEN FAILURES, have nothing to offer us except anger, fear, division and hate.

They want us to hate our government, so they can privatize everything, making their millions and billions, and then leave us in the dirt.

They don't care about our future, our people, or our country. And if some of them do (giving them the benefit of the doubt), then they are just plain wrong, historically ignorant and unable to face the fact that their plans and strategies DON'T WORK.

Get out in November 2012, folks, and vote for our future: VOTE DEMOCRATIC!

"How much you want to bet that Pres. Obama will get blamed for Congress' low approval rating in the next election cycle?"

Haha...zero...I agree. After all, it was his evil sekret mooslin soshulist jihad on 'Murikin Valyooz(TM) that made the GOP look bad...not the GOP's behavior. It's not their fault: he forced them to throw a 4 year temper tantrum and retreat to relying on domestic social issue wedges, latent race resentment, religiosity/fundamentalism and blatant misinformation campaigns to stop his diabolical scheme to turn 'Murika into a sharia law caliphate soshulist commune.
