Gingrich promises 'personal fidelity' in pledge

(CNN) - Newt Gingrich stepped up his efforts to appeal to evangelical Christian voters in Iowa Monday by promising in writing to "defend and strengthen the family."

Gingrich, who has been married three times, specifically said he would "uphold the institution of marriage through personal fidelity to my spouse and respect for the marital bonds of others."

Gingrich made the pledge to The Family Leader, a socially conservative group based in Iowa. The organization has its own Marriage Pledge that other 2012 White House hopefuls have signed, including Texas Gov. Rick Perry, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.

Gingrich did not sign The Family Leader's pledge himself, but did provide a lengthy written response to the organization. The former House speaker said he was fully committed to defending traditional marriage, including enforcing the Defense of Marriage Act and supporting a constitutional amendment defining marriage as between a man and woman.

Gingrich also used his pledge to lambaste what he called an intrusion of federal courts in the private lives of Americans, saying the phenomenon "amounts to a constitutional crisis."

In a statement accompanying Gingrich's pledge, Family Leader President and CEO Bob Vander Plaats welcomed the former House speaker's commitment.

"We are pleased that Speaker Gingrich has affirmed our pledge and are thankful we have on record his statements regarding DOMA, support of a federal marriage amendment, defending the unborn, pledging fidelity to his spouse, defending religious liberty and freedom, supporting sound pro-family economic issues, and defending the right of the people to rule themselves," Vander Plaats said.

In November, the group said it had narrowed the list of candidates it might endorse to four: Gingrich, Perry, Bachmann and Santorum.

Political observers have long questioned Gingrich's appeal to socially conservative Christian voters because of his multiple marriages. The pledge made Monday came after Perry questioned Gingrich's marriages at a Republican primary debate in Iowa Saturday.

Perry warned that a politician who was unfaithful to his wife might also cheat in other ways, adding, "if you cheat on your wife, you'll cheat on your business partner, so I think that issue of fidelity is important."

Gingrich took the criticism in stride, saying "I've made mistakes at times. I've had to go to God for forgiveness. I think people have to measure who I am now, and whether I'm a person they can trust."

How many crazy pledges do republicans have to make before voters realize that they are putting less important things above our country that will negate their pledge to our government and our people? Pledges to teavangelicals and Norquist are un American.

OMG, don't make promises you can't keep! What is it with the republicans and signing pledges??? You signed a marriage certificate too, but you chose not to honor that. Newt said "I asked God for forgiveness and had to reconcile my faith" then why are so you judgemental and critical of others? The bible I read says the merciful shall obtain mercy, there is nothing merciful about Newt, except when he is begging for mercy from others! HYPOCRITE!

How old are these people, 15?! What's with all this pledge crap? The only pledge they should be signing is to the American people, not these nut-job fruitcakes that want to impose their will/religion onto the rest of the country. I hope Gingrich get the nomination, I really do, because the republicans will lose in a landslide. The majority of Americans don't appreciate this crap nor do they trust Gingrich any further than they can throw him.

Can you say, "serial philanderer"? A pledge from this guy is like, well, no pledge at all. If this is what passes for a political candidate in America these days, we are all in deep trouble. Bob VanderPlatts and The Family Leader make me embarrassed to be from Iowa. Come on, people. Use your feeble brains once in awhile. Gingrich is a first-class clown who is interested in nothing other than hearing himself speak. Don't be fooled. He is still the same boob he's always been. We deserve better. I'm an Obama man, but take a look at Jon Hunstman. He's got brains, experience, and a heart, and he seems to be more concerned for America and all the Americans living here then any other Republican.

As for Gingrich, it's not just his hypocritical stance on marriage that I don't trust him. Doing some research on his actions as Speaker of the House in 1994 (I was only a child that time), I see no reason to trust him running this country.

The article incorrectly states the following:

"Political observers have long questioned Gingrich's appeal to socially conservative Christian voters because of his multiple marriages."

Being married multiple times is not really the problem; it was the adultery that lead to two divorces and to the second two marriages.

@So what was the marriage ceremony for?

All candidates should be asked whether they have ever been involved in abortion or not. Some may have paid or urged old girlfriends or sidekicks to have abortions.

Because someone is pro-choice does not mean that the person supports abortion, just like allowing atheist not to believe in God does not mean that one does not believe in God too.

Been a while since I left the Catholic faith, but I think annulments come into play if one was previously married in a catholic church and want to re-marry as a catholic again (which would not apply to Newt)... but like I said, been a while...

How much did it cost to be accepted into the church when divorced twice. Good Catholic who found Jesus? A recent quote/analysis of Newter,
Newt Gingrich’s mind is in love with itself. It has persuaded itself that it is brilliant when it is merely promiscuous. This is not a serious mind. Gingrich is not, to put it mildly, a systematic thinker. His mind is a jumble, an amateurish mess lacking impulse control. He plays air guitar with ideas, producing air ideas. He ejaculates concepts, notions and theories that are as inconsistent as his behavior. He didn’t get whiplash being a serial adulterer while impeaching another serial adulterer, a lobbyist for Freddie Mac while attacking Freddie Mac, a self-professed fiscal conservative with a whopping Tiffany’s credit line, and an anti-Communist Army brat who supported the Vietnam War but dodged it.

More good news..... Romney is a 1%er and cannot relate to anyone and even more important doesn't know why! Paul is circling Neptune. Bachmann's husband will bring her down. How in the heck did Perry get elected Governor anyway??? Santorum is running for VP with anyone..... Huntsman is the only remaining candidate with integrity, experience, and wisdom required to beat Obama. Can't figure out why he isn't getting respect!

I don't really care that he's an adulterer. We can forgive that. It is when he promises to imprison or stone to death anyone who commits adultery -starting NOW – that I find to be unacceptably immature and arrogant. There is no punishment for adultery, just sleep around all you want, and when you get caught, or when you are 68 or so, just say you made some mistakes and now you repent, then you can be the role model for all the boys and girls to follow.

Gingrich also emphasized the importance of character in one of the speeches in January, something that will factor into voter decisions during the 2012 election cycle.

"The fact is what matters in life is your character, not your I.Q.," Gingrich said

The Presidency should is held in High Regard. Chracter is what we should use to determine who will best represent us. Gingrich's character is shameful and no one who has a consistent record of adultery should ever be considered for the office of the Presidency. How do we really know what he says now we can really beleive. He has switched religions 3 times and his wives 3 times as well. He signed the marrige pledge, but I feel he signed many years too late. Had President Obama or any other Democrat had done the same as Newt had done I doubt if they would be so willing to turn a blind eye. Newt is just pandering to the early caucus state voters–most of which are the most undereducated, underpriviledged republican stronghold states in the union. If some of these states would vote out their oppressors, they might actully see what it's like to live in a democracy as opposed to a dictatorship or theocracy.

Newt may be enjoying his standings in states like Iowa, NH and SC, but there are 47 states that he has to pass the test, and with his record and past ethics sanctions, I doubt he will convince everyone in every state. He is a bloated pig that should be shown the door out of Washington DC for good.

Democrats answer to everything, TAX THE RICH, TAX BUSINESS: with regards to your comments about Bill Clinton: Gingrich lost seats in the '98 midterms, and he was exposed ( pun intended) as a hypocrite. The GOP, to its credit, did fine him for the cost of the investigation while sparing him from the bulk of the charges against him. He resigned his Speakership and his seat with a minimal amount of whimpering. No one enjoyed watching the sordid details of Clinton's affair with Monica Lewinsky ( except for the conservative voyeaurs that used taxpayer money to publish and purchase the graphic grand jury testimony Clinton was forced to give), but apparently you did. Its a pity you don't hold Newt to the same standard Clinton was held to by the GOP, but see fit to do the now standard line of lies and attacks by the GOP, all the while blaming the MSM, the DNC, etc. This is about Newt's hypocrisy: stay on topic so you don't appear as an even bigger ass than you normally do.

I guess when you are the candidate who has a couple divorces under his belt already you really need to more vocally promise to be faithful to your current wife than the guys who haven't cheated on and divorced two previous wives. But, then, I've never quite gotten why for all these christian conservatives the vows they actually took to their wives and their god are simply not enough for them.. they have to promise to everyone else that they will keep the promise they already made years ago.

Yes, Canuck, exactly. AND how many are pledging fidelity in a non-binding pledge when the binding pledge meant nothing to him, while trying to tell sheep how meaningful it will be, and how it makes him so electable. I do not object to the divorces per se, I object to A) his attacking President Clinton while engaging in *exactly* the same behavior, and B) the completely sanctimonious way he is portraying his Godliness while being totally judgemental at the same time. Democrats answer blah blah blah: "So was this your assessment of Bill Clinton and his conduct while being a married sitting President? Like I said, all hypocrites..."

Let's see...Warren Harding's (R) one and only child was born to his MISTRESS in 1919, the year before he was elected President (his long-suffering wife served as FLOTUS). Herbert Hoover (R) used to bang his secretary in the same room where Monica gave Bill his BJs. Dwight Eisenhower (R) had an affair with his driver. Divorcee Ronald Reagan (R) got Nancy pregnant before the wedding. But hey, at least Richard Nixon (R) was faithful to Pat.

Nobody cares about Newt's divorces. It's his total lack of honor that makes him unworthy to serve as leader of the greatest nation on earth. How clear does it need to be for you? He was hasmmering a staffer while he prosecuted Clinton for the same thing! His wife had cancer when was fooling around on her! He was disgraced by the House for ethics violations. Newt sounds like a parody of the Verizon commercial: "Can you trust me now?" He will be faithful until he isn't. And he will decide when that will happen. Let's not overlook that he chooses which marital bonds he will support.

On a related note, the concept of candidates and elected officials signing pledges offered by single-issue organizations and then using that pledge as an excuse to not participate in the public discourse while in office should be a reason for removal from office.

Evangelicals have descended pathetically from who they are - committed Christians wanting to share Jesus Christ - to political fanatics who will believe anything anyone says, as long as they claim to be Christians - no matter that they have demonstrated that they care noting at all for Jesus, Christianity, or any moral principles at all. Newt Gingrich is a conscienceless megalomaniac who will do and say anything at all to gain power. Have the Evangelicals forgotten the reminder that the Devil can - and does - quote Scripture?

Didn't he already make that pledge – technically under oath by getting married whether it be with a government employee or in a church? He didn't keep those promises. why this one? Oh yeah, he's old now.
And what's with all these written pledges and promises given to our elected officials and those running? Are they even legal? Can they take an oath that will affect their ability to vote on given bill s while in office?

according to the catholic rules newt can be "forgiven " for adultery–but being forgiven for divorcing the first wife for having cancer and divorcing the second wife for having MS does not make the the girl friend a legitimate wife. in order for this "confession" to "take" he must regret his "sin" and seek to make his life clean -that would make him leave his girl friend.

Newt Gingrich's wife has released a statement in support of his renewed marriage pledge.

"I stand by my husband's commitment to family values and fidelity. As a wife, I cannot emphasize how much this means to me. Forget weddings wows and promises to your spouse – what can show more commitment than promising fidelity to a social conservative group in Iowa? I am proud to be married to a man of his integrity and honor.

Newt might have made some mistakes in the past, but I am firm in my conviction that he is a changed man. I trust him fully to always – no matter what happens – stay truthful to his vows made in Iowa. And if he doesn't, he can always make a new vow at the next campaign stop. That's just the kind of man he is – and I love him for that."

How about the GOP pledge to the American people that they will stop acting like grade schoolers and start acting like responsible adults. How can you on one hand vow to "defend the right of people to rule themselves" (aka small government) and on the other support the right of the government to unilaterally intervene into the most personal choices that someone could possibly make (the choice of whom to marry and the choice of how and when to have children)?! Government doesn't get any bigger than when it invades our lives in that way. Perhaps these people should finally wake up to the FACT that freedom OF religion MUST BY DEFINITION also include freedom FROM religion. Henry Ford famously said "you can have ANY color Model T you want, so long as it is black." These hypocrites are saying "you can have freedom of ANY religion you want, so long as WE APPROVE OF IT."

Romney would have had the general election in the bag...say what you will about the guy, but not only does he have the experience to turn this country around, he's proven time and time again that he's capable. Flip flopper? Meh...that would describe every single politician. Obama's the biggest flip flopper of them all...he just sugar coats it a little better by framing it as "my position is evolving..." What a sad, sad state into which our political climate has fallen. Why? Partly because we demand no better. We will accept what is spewed at us because we have no time to bother demanding better for ourselves and this country. We just care that we get to WalMart and buy presents in time, and hope no one steals our credit card information in the process. And partly because we know no better. Ignorance abounds because too many of us were not properly educated. People fall into roles of parenthood, administration, clergy, mentoring and teaching without having sufficient moral composition to do right by those they affect, and the cycle continues to new generations. How to fix it? Educate yourselves. Realize each one of us has an obligation to him/herself and others to be enlightened to Right and Wrong, what life is about, and how to treat those around us. It doesn't require much, nor does it require a school, or religion. It requires attention, intuition, curiosity and some work.

"ACTIONS speak louder than words". Evangelicals, will you really choose Newt to be the standard bearer for your values??? The Democrats will love taking over as the party of "family values" if he wins.

Newt's "pledge" is proof positive that he will say or do whatever it takes to get elected. I'll bet that he ha his fingers & toes crossed when he made the pledge!!!

Interesting that the country is so concerned with gay marriage. I have been with my wife for 20 years happliy and legally married for 2. Seems lesbians can be more faithful than an GOP candidate.

Are you Republicans really buying this crap out of Newt Gingrich's mouth?
He promised this in his vows to his first two wives.

Doesn't Newt realize what an embarrassing mistake he just made? He had to promise not to commit adultery anymore to get Christians to vote for him. Newt has now publicly branded himself with the Scarlet Letter.

The evangelicals are like the unions. Who else are they going to vote for? These candidates shouldn't be spending their time worrying about them because theyr'e going to support whomever the GOP nominee is. Just like the unions will support Obama no matter what. That's why Obama is holding up the 120,000 jobs for the Keystone pipeline. He knows he has the union support, so securing the enviro vote is more important.

It's not so much that Gingrich cheated, but that he cheated on a dying wife, and then had the audacity to go after President Clinton when he was doing terrible things on the Capital parking lot! That tells you a great deal about his lack of character. Now that he's 68, and a Grandfather? well, sure he's cleaned up his life, because he's too old to get away with anything at this point in his life. I'll never trust this man!

Except for that time he divorced his wife while she was going through chemo, guess they'll just give him a pass on that. I really wish these people would realize that marriage has nothing to do with their religion, it's technically a legal contract.

I can't think of ANY promises Gingrich has kept in the past. NOT ONE. He is whistling Dixie. He prides himself, even brags, about his own silver-tongue. "I can sell ice to an Eskimo" he once stated. His degree openly states
"Propaganda Deception". There is a sure-fire way of detecting his deception........when he moves his lips.

Ask his first two wives, how good his pledges are. How can you be married 3 times and be a "good Catholic"? I am a catholic and it seems like the church has made a big mistake dealing with this man.

Will this be as good as his "Contract to America"? Boy with all the contracts, pacts and vows that this
Blowhard has ever done and consistently reneged his lucky he didn't made one to the devil. But I bet his ambitions to be the leader of the free world everything is possible except that if he does not fulfill it there's only one outcome of it and it won't be pretty for him

Gingrich says anything to get votes, that is so obvious. The immigration amnesty was for latino votes, the invented Palestinians was for Jewish votes It is hard to understand how he is leading the pack now. Don't voters think anymore?

Newt, the guy who was fined $300,000.00 for ETHICS? The guy who was fired by HIS OWN PARTY?
Newt, the guy who "ADVISED" Freddy Mac, to the tune of 1.6 MILLION (taxpayor) dollars?

It would seem the epitome of hypocrisy to expect that any Christian could in good conscious put into office, any man of such low moral character. Surely the evangelicals would not rally behind such a man without risk to their own concepts of righteousness.
