Des Moines, Iowa (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich's campaign confirmed Wednesday he is squeezing in a quick trip to South Carolina while continuing to make a final push in Iowa and New Hampshire.
The former House speaker will attend a "Christmas Lunch with Newt" charity event at in Columbia on Dec. 23. Blue Marlin restaurant owner Bill Dukes is sponsoring the shrimp and grits luncheon, and according to the invitation, guests are being asked to bring a non-perishable item to donate to Harvest Hope Food Bank.
The current GOP frontrunner is making a big push in the early nominating states and boasts of having the largest organization among other candidates in South Carolina, which holds its primary contest on Jan. 21.
According to Gingrich's campaign, in South Carolina the candidate will speak and take questions at the 12:30 p.m. lunch. He'll also attend a couple private meetings.
Dukes tells CNN he sponsors events for Harvest Hope every holiday season but the Gingrich supporter was happy to work the event around Gingrich's schedule.
