Council Bluffs, Iowa (CNN) – The first event of Rick Perry's Iowa bus tour was billed as a town hall meeting, but Perry didn't take any questions from the crowd of roughly 60 people gathered at a Victorian mansion in Council Bluffs. Instead he introduced a surprise guest: Captain Dan Moran, a former Marine who was severely wounded in Iraq.
Moran –who has endorsed Perry and appeared in a video on the governor's behalf– spoke passionately about American exceptionalism, and ran through several reasons why he believes Perry is the most qualified candidate to be president.
"There's no doubt in my mind that he can get America working again," Moran said of Perry. "I started my own business when I came back – a simple idea. I want to create jobs for veterans. It was because of the conditions that he set in the state of Texas that I was able to go with that vision and be able to have a thriving business."
When Perry took the microphone he also touted his job creation record, portraying himself as the only outsider in the race, and without naming any of his rivals he took aim at the two frontrunners in the GOP primaries.
"Changing one Washington insider for another Washington insider is not going to change a thing," Perry said. "Taking a Wall Streeter and sending him to Washington DC is not going to change a thing. What this country's got to have is an outsider."
While Mitt Romney's private sector experience isn't technically on Wall Street, the company he founded, Bain Capital, manages $66 billion in assets and bills itself as "one of the world's leading private, alternative asset management firms." The leader in most recent polls, Newt Gingrich is a former House Speaker and spent twenty years as a member of the House of Representatives.
With voters fed up with both Wall Street and Washington, Perry spent time today highlighting his Texas roots in the hopes that some Iowa voters are still looking for someone untainted by either.
Following up on a recent ad aimed at social conservatives, Perry also doubled down today on his claim that President Barack Obama is engaged in a war on America's Christian values.
"His Justice Department is trying to impact longstanding law that basically says whether or not a church can hire or fire a minister and or their staff because of their values," Perry said. "Think about that. That's a war on values. That is a war on religion. And Americans won't accept this assault on their values anymore."

Sen. Rubio for vice president?
Mr. Perry can say anything he pleases as is his right but his accusation that President Obama is anti-Christian has no basis. If he is judging everyone by the standards of the most conservative religious then more than three-quarters of the American people will fail. This country does not have a religion. This country does provide for religious freedom, If his remarks are acceptable to people then we are all in trouble.
Well there's no doubt in my mind that this guy will rob us all blind. You can tell by the wrinkles in his face.
Perry, what the country needs is somebody who gets the job done. Whether this is a career politician, an outsider or bugs bunny really doesn't matter a bit. The question is who is this "wonderboy" ?
Yes, Rick used the federal aid he took for his state, and the government jobs that he brought to Texas and started using it of his platform of less government. You say what??
On creating jobs..., Texas Monthly, thru thorough research, determined that Perry did, indeed create a lot of jobs. However, these existing businesses/employers, were actively lured to Texas from other States. Tax breaks, little union threat, no personal income tax and other significant incentives. So, the jobs came from NY, WA, CA, etc, etc. In addition, the jobs created were little more than minimum wage positions.., the execs & mgt came from outside TX. After all, TX is vigerously fighting MS for the bottom rung on the ladder for effective public education. With Gov. Perry's leadership, they will likely succeed.
Mitt won't be the GOP candidate, fact is, that the Baptist, Evangelicals, etc., won't vote for a Mormon and the GOP know it.
Funny. The Ron Paul story is filled with shills hired/appointed by cnn, so there is no option to post. Yet, turn the page and say all you want on "also-ran" Perry. Ron Paul is right. Why should the federal government have any say on local law? Hands-free cell phones are fine in a car. What's next, no talking? Pay attention to what's being said shills. Ron Paul is the only choice for freedom. All the rest are just more of the same. Police state.
God let me be hurt grately in 2005. He said, as long as they hurt you and do not change from hurting you,
I will hurt them also grately. So I cry to GOD in pain. Do you see the joy they get in the pain they cost. Look back
at the years, June 2005 tell 2011. It is not the earth heating up. It is GOD heating up.
You may say I am off topic, but if only you could know how off topic the world is.
There are people, that all holy books say, do to them no harm.
I doubt you guys will see this but . . .
David – libertarianism might have worked in the early 19th century but in a nation of 310 million people, I don't think so. It is idealistic and impractical. When liberty becomes license, there can be no society, no culture, except that of the individual who is only motivated by self-interest. I may be a lib, but I still agree with Christ that we are our brother's keeper.
Robert – should we trust our local governments, who cannot even pave the damn streets, with out national defense? Should one township make driving with cell phones illegal, and the next not? Is that practical?
who is running rick perry's campaign? they run a pro-christian, anti-gay ad on tv in iowa and it uses aaron copland music...did someone forget to tell them aaron copland was gay?
It would be a major disaster if Perry get elected as the republican nominee. This would be the greatest landslide victory in American history. Why don't the republican electorate put this to the test. At this point NO ONE in the republican field can match up with Obama, so why don't they just give Perry a chance to do so?
This Nerd would be so ashamed of himself, that maybe he would rush as fast as he can back to grade school to upgrade his Speaking, debating and word usage skills.
And just because the guy is a vet makes him qualified to discuss Perry's qualifications. Hell, Joe the plumber is more qualified. At least he's a business man.
Ron Paul has the Plan: 2hrs ago
Paul is breaking into lead in Iowa. Along with young voters and swingovers Paul is leading America select (3rd party).
GOP may suffer but third party will represent 1/3 of all popular votes. That said Paul may win by default in Presidential elections........
Rick Perry has been underestimated before and emerged victorious — even against an old fighter like Karl Rove. Perry just keeps getting steadily better as he calibrates his Texas persona for a national audience.Gov. Perry has an unmatched record of job creation and the most substantive reform platform of all the candidates. He is a true leader who inspires supporters with his bold ideas, unwavering principles and strong moral character. Presidential leadership should NOT be defined solely by the ability to respond to complexity in a sixty-second sound bite.Resilience, moral courage, and grace under fire, are far more important character traits for America's Commander in Chief.A genuine sense of humour, and humility, are also helpful. I look forward to voting for him in 2012. He is the only candidate I truly want to vote for. If he runs with Marco Rubio, the Electoral College map will be a sea of red with a couple of tiny blue dots. Rick Perry 2012!

Betcha $10,000 that he'll do it again!!!
If anybody from Iowa reads this, please do NOT even consider our stupid governor as a possibility for POTUS. He's not smart enough, he's crooked as a dog's hind leg, and he would have you think that he talks to Jesus on a daily basis. He's a fraud. Please send him home. We'll tolerate him for three more years, then he'll become a professional lobbyist. . (in Washington, of course)
Every time I see Perry at the debates, I keep thinking didn't we vote this guy off already?
