Paul questions Gingrich's draft deferment

(CNN) - Ron Paul issued a new hit on Newt Gingrich Thursday, suggesting his rival was incautious by taking a hawkish stance on U.S. defense while having deferred military service himself.

"He's probably as aggressive with the military as anybody," Paul said on Fox News. "He supports all the wars in the Middle East a thousand times more than I would. But you know in the nineteen-sixties when I was drafted in the military, he got several deferments. He chose not to go. Now he'll send our kids to war."

Paul, who has seen a recent jump in Iowa polls, served as a surgeon for the U.S. Air Force in the 1960s after graduating from medical school.

Gingrich was an active student during the 1960s, earning a bachelors degree from Emory University in 1965 and a masters from Tulane in 1968. He later earned a Ph.D from Tulane.

In his criticism of Gingrich Thursday, Paul noted an explanation the former speaker has given about his deferments.

"At that time he said that one person wouldn't make a difference," Paul said. "He didn't see how he could make a difference. So I see that as important information. People should know that. It reflects on him."

Thursday's comments aren't the first time Paul has gone after Gingrich. The Texas congressman released a round of negative television ads last week, painting Gingrich as inconsistent and not sufficiently conservative. The ads ran in Iowa and New Hampshire.

A spokesman for Gingrich did not reply to a request for reaction to Paul's comments.

Ron Paul's campaign should have thrown that bit in with the "Serial Hypocrisy" ad! A wannabe hawk who took one too many deferments in his time.

The SAME can be/is said of Romney. They are BOTH willing to send our sons and daughters off to die but are more than willing to keep theirs protected. Are you kidding me? I will do EVERYTHING in my power to get people to vote AGAINST BOTH OF THEM on that issue ALONE.

He's following in the tradition of Cheney. The ones who had no interest in serving themselves are real quick to ask others to serve. And they have no hesitation in committing troops to combat, even when the nation is not threatened. Republican "chicken hawks" gotta love them!

thanks Ron Paul for bringing it up. Newt is another old man sending someone else's kids off to fight and die in a war.

BTW what did Romny do, Santorum etc?

Newt is nothing more than a bully and a coward......with no plan to rebuild the middle class.

I believe he was deferred due to MENTAL INSTABILITY.

Gingrich said "he didn't see how he could make a difference " ,
If that is true, that dose it for me .
We are going to have a new President in 2012.
The only question is who? You have to wait for the punch line before rejecting my argument.
Just like I had to listen to RON PAUL explain the ramifications of his policies before I
decided to make RON PAUL my first choice for the Republican nomination.
With Ron Paul’s election we could have sixteen years of stable Government if you assume his
son Rand Pall would follow him.

Thank you Mr. Paul for bringing up this subject again. Those who did not serve are too willing to send the young men and women to war. How many thousands of young women and men need to be pawns in this game to show who is the biggest hawk. How many of their children have served or are serving in the military and fighting in this war? It has to stop.

lFYI: We were and active duty military man and family for over 20 years. War is evil.

Thank you Ron Paul i did not know that. Adding it to the list of why Gingrich should not be President, darn i'm running out of paper it's getting quite long.

"Thursday's comments aren't the first time Paul has gone after Gingrich. The Texas congressman released a round of negative television ads last week, painting Gingrich as inconsistent and not sufficiently conservative."-Kevin Liptak

All you have to do is look at Gingrich's past voting record to see that he is NOT conservative at all. He is a PROGRESSIVE through and through. I can't really say much better for Romney. Both Gingrich and Romney have been on both sides (flip-flopped)of many hot-button issues for conservatives (i.e. individual mandates,Bank bailouts, gun control, etc, etc.)

If you want consistency, you have to look elsewhere. This is common knowledge, so what is it that you are trying to suggest here? That, somehow, Ron Paul is wrong or vicious for pointing out the obvious? Give me a break! FAIL

Yes, let me take your sons and daughters and send them half way around the world so they can fight in wars that achieve nothing for this country but put money in the pockets of the defense contractors who paid for my campaign. Oh, and by the way, I didn't serve myself because I was studying really important stuff like European history in college at the time. What a phony! Thanks, Ron Paul, for bringing this to everyone's attention. You rock!

It seems the politicians most eager for war are those who never went and do not have to go. They get their kicks vicariously. I still remember with shame Bush crowing that he was a 'wartime president' and Cheney's cowardly defense of torture. What happened to my father's America?

"At that time he said that one person wouldn't make a difference,"

Odd, now the salamander thinks one person CAN make a difference if we will just elect him President, but one more did not make a difference if it meant his fat ass might end up dead in a rice field.

All the architects of the Iraq and Afghan wars are chicken-hawks, getting deferments instead of serving: GW Bush, Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Rush Limbaugh, etc., etc., etc.

And these yahoos had the nerve to attack John Kerry, who actually served in Viet Nam and was decorated for his actions.

What is with our country that there are so many dumb people out there willing to vote for these GOP yahoos and against their own self-interest?

If for nothing else, Ron Paul has been put on this earth to strictly speak the truth. Although I don't know if I would put him in charge with that much going on in the Middle East, but I have fallen in love with Ron Paul. The guy is not afraid to speak the truth CONSISTENTLY!!!

Most republicans are very ready to start wars using other peoples children but when it comes to serving themselves they are chickens who seek deferments. Not just Gingrich but Cheney, the man who almost started the Iraq war on his own, had 5 or 6 deferments. And of course there was Dubya who used his fathers power as Governor to avoid active service in Vietnam....the list goes on

I just became a Ron Paul supporter. George H W Bush (Bush 41) is the only president in recent memory deserving of any respect from veterans.

The Texas congressman released a round of negative television ads last week, painting Gingrich as inconsistent.
I think the portrait of inconsistency was painted by Gingrich himself. Dr. Paul merely blew the cobwebs off of the painting. I think Ron Paul's intention is to show people the true colors of Newt as opposed to the colors Newt would like for us to see through rose colored glasses. Too bad for Newt, he can't flop that mop back in Dr. Paul's directions, since Ron Paul's true colors are the only ones there are to see. This is why Ron Paul is gaining momentum and I hope will be the Candidate to end up in the White House as our next President. President Paul . Let Freedom Ring!
