Sports broadcaster Craig James weighs Senate bid

(CNN) - The crowded field of GOP Senate candidates in Texas may soon add one more hopeful to the mix: ESPN broadcaster Craig James.

The sports network announced on Friday it granted a short-term leave of absence for the college football analyst as he considers a Senate run just days before the Lone Star State's filing deadline on Monday.

Romney clarifies Medicaid comments

Greenville, South Carolina (CNN) - Mitt Romney quickly clarified comments he made regarding Medicaid Friday, saying he had in fact been familiar with the entitlement program in the early 1990s.

At a town hall in Sioux City, Romney told an audience he had once been unclear about the particulars of the program.

House passes spending bill

Washington (CNN) - A compromise spending bill to keep the government funded for the rest of the fiscal year won approval Friday from the House of Representatives, the first step toward averting a partial government shutdown at midnight.

The nearly $1 trillion measure passed on a 296-121 vote and now goes to the Senate, where approval is also expected. It was unclear if a Senate vote would take place Friday or Saturday.

Haley robocalls South Carolina touting Romney

Sioux City, Iowa (CNN) - Mitt Romney's presidential campaign moved quickly Friday to capitalize on a high-profile endorsement from South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley by sending out a wave of robocalls across the early primary state that feature Haley herself making the case for the former Massachusetts governor.

"Hi, this is Gov. Nikki Haley, and this morning I announced my endorsement of Mitt Romney for President of the United States," Haley says in the call, which was received by a Republican voter in Rock Hill who provided it to CNN.

Bachmann on Gingrich: 'I am not a student of his'

Sioux City, Iowa (CNN) – Republican presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann kept up her full court press against frontrunner Newt Gingrich on Friday morning in Iowa, the morning after the two exchanged blows in the final debate before January's caucuses.

Speaking to reporters before launching a 99-county bus tour of the Hawkeye State, Bachmann also targeted former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, who is making a late play in Iowa.

Congress to vote on spending bill to avert shutdown

Washington (CNN) – The House of Representatives will vote Friday on a compromise $1.043 trillion spending bill to keep the government funded for the rest of the fiscal year, then go home for the holidays, Speaker John Boehner said.

If approved as expected, the measure would then go to the Senate. While Senate approval also is considered certain, it is unclear if a Senate vote would take place on Friday or Saturday.

Sioux City, Iowa (CNN) - Mitt Romney boarded a charter airline quickly dubbed "Hair Force One" to fly to South Carolina Friday.

His wife, Ann, told Romney the plane was named in honor of his famously coiffed mane.

Checking the transcript on Gingrich's debate pushback

(CNN) - During Thursday's debate, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich pushed back against charges that he initially derided House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan's plan to overhaul Medicare before ultimately coming out in support of the plan.

Citing comments Gingrich made during an appearance on NBC's "Meet the Press" back in May, Fox News host Neil Cavuto asked Gingrich if Mitt Romney's claims that he has been inconsistent on the issue are fair.
