Storm Lake, Iowa (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry suggested Friday that Iowa may be ripe for natural gas drilling.
Speaking to packed coffee house in Storm Lake during his statewide bus tour, the Texas governor accused President Barack Obama of blocking domestic energy exploration.
"I say, Mr. President, free us in this country to create jobs, free us to allow us to be more dependent on domestic crude, crude that comes from the domestic hemisphere," he said. "Open up our federal lands and waters so that we can have access."
Perry pointed to the Marcellus Shale formation that extends from New York down through Appalachia, saying that scientists only recently discovered large amounts of natural gas under the ground there.
"I mean, we don't know what's underneath Iowa," he said. "There is new technologies coming along. You may be sitting on one of the big gas formations."
"Ten years ago, they didn't know that the Marcellus Shale was there," he said. "They didn't know that we have this massive amount of energy that we are sitting on."

Reach Perry reach.
Perry Breaking News, GOD does not like you!
"I mean, we don't know what's underneath Iowa," he said.
Yes, we do. There are these things called aquifers that contain water that is used for drinking.
I don't dare use my lighter around my faucet in fear I will be burned
and the rich get richer, no fracking
people in iowa beware
More lies from the GOP. The fact is that domestic oil production under Obama is at its highest level since 2003. You can Go o gle it if you don't believe me.
how much money is perry getting
iowa beware
conservatives STILL don't get it. petroleum products ... and that includes natural gas ... are a FINITE resource. we can not ... CAN NOT ... drill our way out of that fact. sooner or later, there will be no more petro-chemicals. the time to develop renewable fuels is NOW!
People have known about the Marcellus formation for decades the technology to tap it was limiting factor, and as far as opening up federal lands –Iowa is comprised of a colossal 0.8% federal lands–the rest being private. As far as opening up water–the EPA gets involved when water is contaminated, otherwise water rights are a state issue–to me this is just another shallow unintelligent argument by Perry. (For record I'm pro-drilling)
So more gas and oil can be exported to China?
Rick Perry would start a new war guaranteed !
This guy must be on Hillbilly Heroin , " Back Pain " !
Mr Perry just wants to prepare you for your possible future Iowa... yippee http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-12-08/gas-fracking-chemicals-detected-in-wyoming-aquifer-epa-says.html
Haha. Maybe someone should tell Rick that the last thing the domestic nat gas industry needs now is more supply. Prices are in the toilet thanks to a glut in supply. If Rick was capable of more than tired talking points he'd point out that the real problem is using it. Obama has failed to embrace gas as a foreign oil alternative.
In ten years, scientists will find a lot of hot gas hiding inside of Rick Perry's head.
I live in Iowa and the only natural gas we have around here is the constant flow of gibberish spewing from the mouths of these Republican president wannabes.
"I say, Mr President, free us to rape the landscape, create more and more pollution, and destroy the environment. What is important here is money, and there's money to be made. We will also create jobs. In the short term they will provide for more pollution and all kinds of neat stuff. In the long term, they will ensure that our children have more work to do...cleaning up after we've destroyed the world. It's a true win-win! Heck, the bill won't come due until after I'm out of office. Not my problem!
I live in Texas, but if another state wants to keep this idiot, then welcome to him. I'm embarrassed every time this fool opens his mouth.
That right perry they dont know what under them it just may be the pit of hell. I say let em drill so we will be rid of a lot of redneck.
Look Rick, if you really think there's going to be drilling in Iowa you need to coordinate things with Warren Buffett first. Are you guys friends?
Rather than talk about what he didn't know 10 years ago he ought to be brushing up on what he didn't know 10 minutes ago. -
Well, if the Iowans don't mind having water you can light on fire, who am I to judge?
Perry like bush couldnt find oil in Texas lol
There is no oil and gas left in Texas so Perry who is in the pockets of the oil companies is rounding up more business. Kind of tells you who would run the USA if he was President!
He has blocked it per George Soros orders. They expect Oil from Alaska and Canada to go to China and will do whatever to see that it happens. Wake up America.
Perhaps there should be a minimum IQ requirement for presidential candidates. Perry would surely fail.
