Storm Lake, Iowa (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry suggested Friday that Iowa may be ripe for natural gas drilling.
Speaking to packed coffee house in Storm Lake during his statewide bus tour, the Texas governor accused President Barack Obama of blocking domestic energy exploration.
"I say, Mr. President, free us in this country to create jobs, free us to allow us to be more dependent on domestic crude, crude that comes from the domestic hemisphere," he said. "Open up our federal lands and waters so that we can have access."
Perry pointed to the Marcellus Shale formation that extends from New York down through Appalachia, saying that scientists only recently discovered large amounts of natural gas under the ground there.
"I mean, we don't know what's underneath Iowa," he said. "There is new technologies coming along. You may be sitting on one of the big gas formations."
"Ten years ago, they didn't know that the Marcellus Shale was there," he said. "They didn't know that we have this massive amount of energy that we are sitting on."

Yes Iowa, enjoy the Benzene in your water supply!
"There is new technologies coming along...." Great. Several candidates want to go to war with Iran, one thinks international diplomacy consists of "Don't even try it," and this one can't even form a grammatically correct sentence in the English language.
Do the Republicans seriously want us to take them seriously now?
What's with all these Bible thumpers and their desire to foul the earth? You'd think they'd want to preserve our only home, if not for the sake of future generations, than as a meager way of saying thanks to the God they believe created it.
Rick Perry is sitting on one of the biggest gas formations in the western world. Let's just hope he doesn't break wind further.
The only crude this country has an over abundance of, is the crude out of Perry's pie hole.
hey as long as it isn't in my state. Iowa people cn deal with the Alaskan pipe line type of environmental problems... You know it will happen just because businesses WILL take short cuts to reduce costs... It WILL happen.. Good luck, Iowa, Wyoming, Montana.... you'll need it....
Who is 'us'? The huge corporations that finance Mr. Perry's secessionist, anti-US campaign for Bush II dictator. Who's kidding whom? "we the people" will get nothing out of it, so let's not support it.
When I went to school (in the '60s), we were taught about ecology, and that our generation would become the stewards of our fragile planet. We certainly aren't doing a very good job of that stewardship – especially with these GOTP so-called leaders who care about nothing but the almighty dollar. I care about the earth, and I don't want these fools to allow industry to ruin any more of it. We need to be pursuing green energy, not what they are proposing.
10 yrs ago one of he biggest sources of gas was discovered in Texas. They elected him governor and then he decided to spread his natural gas around the country.
Now he believes the Scientists when they tell him we are floating on gas, but thinks the ones that say we are killing the atmosphere are just a bunch of Al Gore backers. This idiot should go back to Texas and shut up.
Iowa should take every step possible to keep shale gas drilling out of their state. I live in the Marcellus Shale region and we are having so many health problems, property value problems, and the increasing loss of our citizens' and even human rights. There are people living here who do not have safe water to drink because their well water has become polluted from drilling and fracking-related spills and leaks. There are people here who are becoming sick due to air pollution from multiple gas drilling and processing sites near their homes, sites that are all too loosely-regulated in terms of their toxic air emissions. These families can't afford to move and staying is making them sick. Please, Iowans – keep shale gas drilling away from your state. This is a very unsafe practice and despite the industry propaganda (which is rampant) we are having far too many problems with it right now.
It's just like we don't know what's in Perry's skull. Is there a brain in there?? The jury is still out on that one.
This man is desparate..."Drill, baby, drill"...in our federal lands and waters? You can drill baby drill all you want in America and you will never get oil...we do not have it. We, thankfully, have an abundance of water supply at this point in time....so...please back off Perry, we all know fracking is killing the pure water supply. You are asking President Obama to free us in this country in order to poison our waters? Come on Perry...time to get out of the republican clown car...call it quits please. Do not want to see your, or any other politican messing with America's water...and that goes for big oil, corporations also...leave it alone.
Perry wouldn't know a gas formation from a fart. I cannot believe that he is still running. Him and Bachmann should have hung it up long ago.
yea, mr. p., advocating for the petrochemical company and hydraulic fracturing and the stinky alberta tar sands pipleline will get you into political office, as you know. but the problem, for you, is that all the republicans know that too.
Let's herd all the old people in Iowa onto reservations so we can commence drilling!
Sickening when GOP-baggers talk about the economic burden being left to our children and grandchildren, yet they want to hasten the destruction of the environment and the world so there won't be a habitable planet for our children and grandchildren. And people wonder why Americans hate the right-wing?
Republicans complain about Obama and his campaign financing, how he has bazillions of dollars. Compare that to the bazillion of dollars the Republicans are raising, and more to the point, what they're going to flush into the toliet because Obama will win next November anyway. It would just make more sense to conceed this point and use the money to leave the country. But common sense isn't a Republican strong point anyway, so we'll have to listen to more pathetic sore loser whining...
Just this week the Obama administration leased out huge parts of the gulf for drilling. What a liar.
"Drill-baby-drill" people just don't understand: the more we drill now, the sooner we run out of fossil fuels, and the sooner we must then depend on alternative fuel sources.
I dunno .. too logical maybe?
duh baby duh!
Thats right Perry free us to drill! We do not need clean drinking water, and so far I have not seen a single study that says we can drink oil, or breath natural gas when you ruin the planet. The Repubs. are trying to MAKE THE MAYAN calendar come true. If they force the states to allow that pipe line to run through their state, the state should be allowed to charge any price for land useage after all they are taking all the riskes and no profit.
Corrected headline: Perry Accuses President of Blocking Pie in the Sky
These wingnuts love Big Oil. Follow the money.
This man continually amazes people by his lack of knowledge. I guess that confirms the existing opinion of the Texas school system.
