Storm Lake, Iowa (CNN) - Republican presidential candidate Rick Perry suggested Friday that Iowa may be ripe for natural gas drilling.
Speaking to packed coffee house in Storm Lake during his statewide bus tour, the Texas governor accused President Barack Obama of blocking domestic energy exploration.
"I say, Mr. President, free us in this country to create jobs, free us to allow us to be more dependent on domestic crude, crude that comes from the domestic hemisphere," he said. "Open up our federal lands and waters so that we can have access."
Perry pointed to the Marcellus Shale formation that extends from New York down through Appalachia, saying that scientists only recently discovered large amounts of natural gas under the ground there.
"I mean, we don't know what's underneath Iowa," he said. "There is new technologies coming along. You may be sitting on one of the big gas formations."
"Ten years ago, they didn't know that the Marcellus Shale was there," he said. "They didn't know that we have this massive amount of energy that we are sitting on."

Pandering at best.
Obama 2012
Perry was probably wondering where they drill for corn oil in Iowa.
There you go, frack the heck out of Iowa and leave Florida alone. We've all seen firsthand the effects of "drill baby drill" down here. And anyone who's been to Houston can drive down refinery row and see how wonderfully it's changed the landscape there. Now Perry suggests we spread the grief around. Could we do the grounds around his house next?
Hmm, no comments so far. Looks like we don't care, Mr Perry. Time to go back to Texas.
It is time to send this dumb cowboy back to Texas
So, there might be natural gas under my feet, therefore we should drill for it in the ocean? If he can't pander better than that then he has no business being in politics.
I wonder of we have oil on cape cod, mass? We could drill there. Screw the environment!!! Drill baby drill. Go back to Texas and drill. They are already having trouble in pa. Drilling for gas with drink water that lites on fire .
The Marcellus Shale industry is destroying the fabric of Southwestern Pennsylvania. The are scarring our landscape with ugly/noisy wells, cracking the roads with large trucks carrying poisonous chemicals, and they are creating problems for people with well water. It's pitting neighbors against each other over the rights of one to impose the industry on nearby neighbors. While jobs and business have been created, many of those have been taken by temporary carpetbaggers who pay nothing in taxes to the local community where they stay in hotels which has taxed local police and emergency services. It's not all its cracked up to be.
Ask the people in North Texas how that fracking is going. Destroys water supplies....more $$$ in his pocket.
everywhere perry goes he leaves a path of destruction.
Only an idiot would chant "drill baby drill" ....as proven by all the idiots who chanted that in the past.
Is this guy really serious? Let's drill a hole somewhere in Iowa and see what we can find? I have a better idea, let's drill a hole in his backyard first. If it makes his yard a toxic mess, maybe it was worth it.
Mr Parry doesn't know what he is talking about--he needs to quit reaching for straws and go home!!!!!!!!!!!! President Obama has been trying to get the jobs going again but the republicans have been blocking everything. The smartest thing the American people can do is vote all the naysayers(that is the republicans in case anyone needs an explanation) in DC out and then things will get done.
Obama/Biden 2012
If you want to bring America down to the condtions in Mexico, then Perry's the man.
All one can say is that this guy is an idiot. And to think that at one time he was leading the polls.
I wish there was a law blocking all the political BS from the news and for wealthy Wall Street to install their choice candidate as president which is what happens anyway. I get so tired of hearing he said she said listen to me I'll be the second coming of Christ and fix everything wrong with America if elected God can't even fix how screwed up the politicans have made America.
See the republican is for the rich oil company and Perry you would never be president.
Yes, coming from the state with no regard to the environment, I'm not surprised. Someone ought to drill on his brain to see if anything is functioning.
These republicans are totally drunk of drilling. Do they think jobs are created only by drilling. What about improving infrastructure like building up bridges, crumbling schools etc. etc. This is totally out of their mind! To hell with drilling.
Well, we know of one big gas bag standing above Iowa and his name is Rick Perry.
Being from Iowa, I don't want my family's tap water to become flammable.
Fire all congress and Republicans in 2012. Keep it in your heart. Do not forget this, just like you don't 9/11.
Obama2012.
PS; Glad Iraq war ended, Bin Laden killed.
too bad we can't capture the gas coming out of these candidates and use it. a lot easier than drilling, fracing, and later having to buy water from the chinese because we've polluted all ours.
Makes sense to me that Perry would be talking about drilling, since the only place he's going is DOWN!
Perry is obviously a better more honest caring respectful individual than any Democrat in America, but I do question his character, there are many better choices than him including Newt and Romney. It amazes me how the libs spew their lies about Newt, it seems to not matter to 'dem that most Americans know what they are saying is all lies, they truly live in a different world where they believe that they get to define truth and facts, I guess that explains about people like Robert Byrd can live a life of hate, hate consumes the heart of each and every Democrat, it always has since their days of cross burning.
