Obama calls for vote on payroll tax cut extension

(CNN) - President Barack Obama said Tuesday that a two-month extension passed by the Senate is the "only viable way" to prevent a tax increase on January 1, and he called on House Republicans to pass the plan supported by a majority of Senate Republicans.

He called on the House Republican leadership to hold an up-or-down vote on a Senate plan to extend the payroll tax cut for two months.

Bill Clinton: Gingrich shouldn't take all the credit

(CNN) – Bill Clinton said Republican presidential contender Newt Gingrich doesn't really deserve the credit he's taking on the campaign trail for balancing the budget during the Clinton administration.

Gingrich served as House speaker for four years of Clinton's presidency. Although the former president said the two had a "decent working relationship," he attributed the bulk of the positive steps in the U.S. economy to the 1993 budget, passed in spite of Gingrich's efforts.

House expected to recess after payroll tax vote

Washington (CNN) - Setting up a stalemate with the Senate, the House will recess later today after a vote that would "disagree" with Senate-passed version of the payroll tax cut extension and demand negotiations to work out differences on the issue, several House Republicans told CNN.

The House would be prepared to come back if and when there is a compromise to vote on, according to GOP members and aides.

Santorum gets backing from Vander Plaats

(CNN) - Republican presidential candidate and former Sen. Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania received the personal endorsement of Bob Vander Plaats, who heads the Family Leader, Tuesday. The Iowa-based Christian organization is influential among social conservative voters in the first-in-the-nation caucus state.

The endorsement comes just two weeks before the Jan. 3 caucuses, which kick off the primary and caucus calendar.

Four years ago, the Family Leader backed former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, who went on to score an upset victory in the Iowa caucuses.
