Ann Romney touts husband's 'character'

(CNN) – Mitt Romney's better half talks up the strength of his character in a new television ad airing in Iowa.

But it's clearly a not-so-veiled Romney campaign swipe at Newt Gingrich's marital infidelity during his previous two marriages.

Ann Romney will tell audiences to look at how presidential candidates have "lived" as an indicator of how they'll lead as president in the spot beginning Friday.

"You can never predict what kind of tough decisions are going to come in front of a president's desk," the wife of former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney says.

"But if you can trust they will do the right thing, and maybe the hard thing, and maybe not the popular thing, and if you really want to know how a person will operate, look at how they've lived their life," she continues, as black-and-white family photos of the Romneys and their children appear.

The 30-second ad titled "Character" is scheduled to air from Friday into next week, as 2012 GOP candidates ready for the first presidential nominating contest Jan. 3. The nation's first caucus will be held in Iowa, a state containing an influential group of conservative voters who place a priority on family values.

Ann Romney has stepped up her solo campaigning on the primary campaign trail recently as Gingrich climbed in the polls nationwide as well as in Iowa, putting her 42-year marriage to the GOP contender front-and-center in the race.

"It is so important to understand the character of a person," she says in the ad. "To me that makes a huge difference. Maybe some voters it doesn't, but for me it makes a huge difference."

The spot closes with a shot of the two walking hand-in-hand.

Ann Romney testified to her husband's character and integrity as she introduced Romney at a town hall in Hanover, New Hampshire Wednesday. She told employees at a steel plant her husband had always been a "reliable" man, using language similar to Mitt Romney's description of the former House speaker as "unreliable."

What's with the photo? Showing someone from the past does not predict who they are in the future!! Jeez

That's right, Ann... He's an expert at disrupting other people lives by throwing them, their jobs, and businesses under the bus, And of course YOU can attest to the fact of his "character" given that you were the recipient of the multi[million dollar life style he garnered by doing so.

Nice try Ann, I'll get my advice elsewhere... I think you should beg for forgiveness!

just ask all the people terminated by Bain Capital businesses how much character Mittens has. he never stood in front of them and told them how he was pocketing millions while he was putting them out of work and out of health benefits. his b**ls are the size of a grain of sand.

Gov. Romney is a salesman. Most salesmen are very likeable. Gov. Romney has spent most of his business career being a true capitalist plutocrat. He buys and sells money. He makes a profit off of a product that is not manufactured, at all. Capital is created by schmoozing up to people and sellling them on some idea, in order to get them unload some of their capital to you. [...doing this was his success at the winter olympics. it was funded by private donations...they were running short on donations so they called Mitt...]

Private capital is also created by using those capital investments to implement your idea, which is where the ideological argument begins. Conservatives, like Gov. Romney, call that job creation, which would make Gov. Romney a "job creator". Liberals are quick to point out that the actual "job creators" are not the financial backers, but rather the hard working, creative entreprenuers who come up with ideas. Most of the creative comes from the middle class. Necessity is the mother of invention.

Just a point of clarification: the company where the Romneys spoke this afternoon was Hypertherm, a U.S. based manufacturer of metal cutting equipment, not a steel plant.

Ann Romney is going to make a wonderful First Lady. She is an admirable and lovely person that our young women can emulate.

Romney's "character" is what makes him attractive to Karl Rove, Dick Cheney, Grover Norquist and the Koch brothers – and it's the same as GW Bush and McCain: A willingness to be a puppet for them and their corporate masters.

Romney would sell his mother down the river if he got the GOP nomination in return ...

Did you know that when Mormons get married, the husband is given his wife's "secret name" that only he knows, so that he can pull them through to "the other side" after death? (look it up)

A Mormon husband controls the fate of his wife's eternal soul; given this, what else do you expect Ann to say about Mittens and his character?

There she goes again. That Ann, acting so zany. Which Mitt's character is she defending? He's reliable as a well-lubed weathervane, but as a principled man....not so much.

Did you know that Mormons believe that a woman must be married to go to heaven? If they're not married, a woman can be received into heaven as a servant.

So of course Ann is going to say nice things about Mittens...

I'm not a Mitt fan – but I will say that one of the big reasons I cannot stand Newt is that he has proven time and again that he is more than willing to lie and cheat on the one person he should always be honest with – his spouse. I think its one of the things that I really like about Obama – He's had a clean, scandal-free relationship with his wife, they obviously get along, and support each other. Newt on the other hand, seems to want to jump ship (or jump something else) when he has a younger, skinnier, blonder woman near at hand.

I cannot fault Ann Romney for showing that she's proud of her husband's apparent fidelity. Too bad his economic policy isnt worth the paper it's written on.

It's sad that people who grew up in this country have absolutely no idea what capitalism is . Romney is a capitalist. America was founded on capitalism, and it became great because of capitalism. All of you must suffer from historical amnesis. Really, your ignorance is staggering.

@Think Again (who stated) "A Mormon husband controls the fate of his wife's eternal soul; given this, what else do you expect Ann to say about Mittens and his character?"

That, and 250 million dollars to play around with, no doubt.

And, hey! What's with the old black and white photoshop look? Been seeing a lot of old Mitt and his "family" this way. Mitt is only a few years older than I, and all my "oldie but goodies" photo's are in color. A message to Gingrich maybe? "Look as us .... we GO WAY back in years (before color photo's even) ... but, not so much you and Calista, huh, Newt?"

Seriously? Ann Romney has led a privledged life – all her life. She knows nothing about struggling Americans. The "Romney's" have never had to actually work – to labor day after day just to make rent EVER. Never once in their privledged lives have they had to decide which bill should they pay – the heat or the lights because their jobs don't pay enough to live on. They are completely out of touch with America. All these people know and care about are the rich and corporate. They don't give a darn about you or me as the current tea bagger congress has shown us over and over and over again.

Ann Romney seems to think people will forget about Romney's lies and vote solely for his character. Not so – but let her keep on believing that right up until we send them BOTH back to their mansion(s) and out of the public eye for good.

We know what kind of tough decisions Romney will make: in a choice between a tax cut for millionairs and healthcare for millions he will take the tax cut for millionaires. Shame on him and the entire Republican/Tparty

So if how people live tell us how they will be as president, will Romney cut jobs for most everyone and line his and his friends' pockets with money? My bet is yes!

If Romney rules like he lives, will he make $10,000 bets about absolutely everything? Reminds me of the Dukes with their one dollar bets in the Eddie Murphy movie Trading Places – how much do you want to bet I can tank the US economy and make myself rich in the process? You were right Mitt – here is your $10,000 dollars.

The United States did not become a great nation because of capitalism. The United States was a great nation when, for a number of years, we had a strong middle class. That was when the United States was at it's strongest. As the middle class has eroded, so has out our greatness. Other countries emulate our democratic values, not our economic system.
