New York (CNNMoney) - The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits dropped to their lowest level since April 2008, boosting optimism in the job market.
In a surprise drop, 364,000 people filed initial jobless claims in the week ended Dec. 17, the Labor Department said Thursday. That was a decrease of 4,000 from the prior week. Economists were expecting claims to rise to 380,000.
The unemployment rate as at 7.8%, and rising, when Obama took the oath, and we were bleeding over 700,000 jobs per month, and rising. GDP was reported at -2%, and falling, but was actually closer to -9%. The People were crying, "You helped Wall Street, what about Main Street?"
One fact that has never been discussed has been what really kept our natoin out of another Great Depression. It as the social safety nets. Social Security. Unemployment insurance. Medicaid and Medicare WIC and Welfare. Without those programs in place, this country would have fallen further than The Great Depression of the 1930s.
good. GOP idiots export these too...
why does obama make it so hard on the big business ... obama makes it hard for them to add jobs... to hire new workers.. i quess he thinks big business are evil... to bad for for natural gas ...
The drop in claims just means no one has a job left to lose.
And the GOP goes, "NNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!".
Oooooh, bad new for the GOP! LOL How many want to bet that conservatives don't believe this news? But they will believe the news if it says jobless claims increased.
Seasonal jobs, great.
I guess we should all vote for Ron Paul now. Obama has really done great. We're right where we were when we elected him with the hopes of things getting better.
So fewer people got fired the week before Christmas. Imagine that. Do you think employers are getting soft leading into the holiday?
