Obama campaign returns Corzine donations

(CNN) - President Barack Obama's reelection campaign returned political donations made by Jon Corzine, the embattled former Democratic governor and senator from New Jersey, on Friday.

The move comes as Corzine endures increased scrutiny following the bankruptcy of his brokerage firm MF Global. Corzine was CEO of the company until it declared bankruptcy in October and he subsequently resigned. Hundreds of millions of dollars in customer funds from MF Global are still missing.

An Obama campaign aide said Friday the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee returned the donations by Corzine and his wife. The donations totaled $70,000.

Corzine and his wife each donated $30,800 to the DNC, which has been returned.

Additionally, Corzine and his wife each made $5,000 donations to the Obama reelection campaign, which was also returned.

The Republican National Committee called on Obama to return all of the money Corzine raised for his reelection campaign in November, including money he raised as a "bundler." Bundlers solicit campaign contributions from their personal and business networks.

"In light of the FBI Investigation into Jon Corzine's company, President Obama should immediately return the $500,000 that Corzine raised on his behalf," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement in November.

I like how "Reince" exagerates the donations at 500,00 vs 70,000.

This could backfire on the GOP if all politicians have to return money gained from corporate crooks.

i would like the republican party to return the $300,000 I lost in my 401k in 2007 from their mismanagement of the economy and market crash; 5 years before i was to retire. i now have to work another 5 years to retire, as the market has not been able to help me recover my loses.

Obama supporters need to take notice of where Obama gets his money from, and what kinds of people are supporting him.

This is just one example of that.

The Republicans love to play with fire; well, finally they got burned. And they will continue to suffer the same fate if they don't change their extremist position.

Nothing like trying to be clean by returning stolen money that a crook with very large Democratic ties is trying to make clean. I guess Obama is not going to go into the Laundry business, at least he's not willing to admit to it. A Chicago crook wanting to be clean, now that's a joke and a half, I'm sure that Obama only waited this long so that he could collect on the interest.

Always knew Corzine was dirty. From the money he made at Goldman Sachs before they took a hit, to this.....the bodies will be recovered and his finances will really be scrutinized.

Just what the heck is the RNC doing in this? It isn't their business to advise the DNC on their business affairs.

Obama could approve Keystone Pipeline then get the EPA to stop it. The only way to insure in will be built is to get rid of OBAMA .

Is it $5k or $500k? The article says $5k and the RNC says $500k.

So Corzine doesn't know where all the money went but a good portion somehow ended up at the DNC and 0bama campaign coffers. Nothing strange there.
