(CNN) - President Barack Obama's reelection campaign returned political donations made by Jon Corzine, the embattled former Democratic governor and senator from New Jersey, on Friday.
The move comes as Corzine endures increased scrutiny following the bankruptcy of his brokerage firm MF Global. Corzine was CEO of the company until it declared bankruptcy in October and he subsequently resigned. Hundreds of millions of dollars in customer funds from MF Global are still missing.
An Obama campaign aide said Friday the Obama campaign and Democratic National Committee returned the donations by Corzine and his wife. The donations totaled $70,000.
Corzine and his wife each donated $30,800 to the DNC, which has been returned.
Additionally, Corzine and his wife each made $5,000 donations to the Obama reelection campaign, which was also returned.
The Republican National Committee called on Obama to return all of the money Corzine raised for his reelection campaign in November, including money he raised as a "bundler." Bundlers solicit campaign contributions from their personal and business networks.
"In light of the FBI Investigation into Jon Corzine's company, President Obama should immediately return the $500,000 that Corzine raised on his behalf," RNC Chairman Reince Priebus said in a statement in November.
I don't think they should return any money because its legal now any body or any group can donate to our campaign . If they return the money I think its a mistake.
I guess he didn't want to return the money from the 32.5k a plate donation dinner Corzine organized. Looks like Obama is pandering, if he wanted to really disavow that relationship he'd return the bundled money as well.
Well done Obama.Donations dipped in blood of people never produce results or healthy results.Ill gotten money always produce ills rather than fills.
Would be interesting to learn how many Reps. returned funds from super pacs which no one knows for sure where any of that money really comes from.
Let's hope Prince Reibus holds his low-life GOP-baggers accountable for their donations as well, although I doubt they will.
And just to think the Biden obamanation administration said corzine would be the best choice of thr treasury. What a group, and tim geitner is just as bad
I don't know why Obama would need to return the money he accepted from a corrupt individual, why change his habits now?
What the county needs a honest president, thank you President Obama.
So, Obama will return all the money from the crook who got caught but not the money from the banks, their ceo's et al that he bailed out?
Guess the entire U.S. budget is available to bribe people for re-election funds....
Can we get back the Solyndra donations too.
Only two types of people still support Obama, either: 1) you are a true socialist / communist (you support his socialist / communist policies), or 2) you are ignorant (you don't have a clue and you vote for him just because he is a black democrat).
