Decorah, Iowa (CNN) - It was a rare sight, but Callista Gingrich, wife of GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich, stepped in front of the microphone to introduce her "husband and best friend" at a pizzeria Tuesday.
As much as the former House speaker boasts of his wife's involvement in his campaign, she rarely speaks on the record or at campaign events. She is a familiar face on the campaign trail and at book signings, often standing next her husband at the podium, but she rarely takes center stage herself.
Callista Gingrich, who attended Luther College, chose to make the final stop in Tuesday's Iowa campaign swing in the college town to introduce her husband at Mabe's Pizza.
She shared some of her personal history with a packed room in the basement of the legendary pizza restaurant.
"One little known fact is that I actually lived upstairs above Mabe's Pizza as a senior, so Mabe's is very special to me," she said.
She quickly moved on to tout her husband's credentials.
"A lot of people ask me why Newt would be a good president, and I really think that Newt has been preparing for this challenge his entire life," she said in Decorah.
"He has a proven record of national leadership, a thorough understanding of our nation's history and a genuine love for our country, and I believe he is the best person to lead our country."

Don't get me wrong. Obama's a corporatist tw4t just like the rest of them. Man, we're doomed.
Oh please.
the joker speaks?
I didn't know the bimbo could speak!
She looks S-C-A-R-Y.
I am but one voice saying, "How does living above a pizza resturant improve our economy?" Perhaps they've identified with Cain's 9-9-9 plan over a slice.
does that national leadership include the ethics charges?
Yup. Newt's lifetime of economic malfeasance, marital infidelity, historical revisionism, crackpot thinking, egotism, greed, and gluttony has certainly prepared him for the presidency. He can shut the government down, arrest judges, and venerate the Pope while he cheats on Callista.
"I've known this man since he was married to his previous wife..."
Which wife/mistress is this one??
If I were her, I'd keep a low profile to avoid futher scrutiny of her and her husband's illicite relationship beginnings.
Is she the one he cheated with when he served his wife with divorce papers while she was recovering from breast cancer in the hospital? Oh no, that was his second wife, this one is his third. Yup, she better stand real close cause we know that Newt has those wondering eyes. Which makes me wonder how any woman in their right mind can find him attractive!?? Yuk. . . .
He doesn't have enough worthwhile credientials to counteract his bagage. He has made to many personal and professional mistakes. I think that he needs to just be a support person because he is too far all over the map to be president. The worst idea is to have judges haulled before Congress just because they made a decision that people don't agree with is outrageous. It is the court that keeps us in line. This seperates us from 3rd world countries and dictatorships because we have an independant court system.
Callista..tsk, tsk. You must have realized a long time ago, that breaking up Newt's already failed second marriage to get a piece of that wasn't all that...Trapped in a marriage to Newt Gingrich, having to wear that helmet of fake hair, smiling with that campaign (read: cam-PAIN) face 24/7, no wonder Tiffany's has hit their annual sales goals for several years running because of Newt trying to keep you on the bandwagon...Just so sad.
and a crook, adulter, lair and a home wrecker for a wife.
The plastic barbie speaks!! Will wonders never cease?
"A lot of people ask me why Newt would be a good president, and I really think that Newt has been preparing for this challenge his entire life," she said in Decorah.
And part of that preparation was cheating with you for years and getting serviced in the driveway of his home. Yep, the quality of a man we seek. NOT!!!
She is just temporary. He'll replace her with a young staffer sooner or later. Pathetic.
"Mrs. Gingrich" is not specific enough. Did you mean the first, second, or third "Mrs. Gingrich"?
I had to look at the article I wanted to see which MRS. GINGRICH they were talking about. Maybe she should speak out while she is still a Mrs. Gingrich, he might have someone else in mind already.
Is it coincidence that Callista is speaking out the same day that Newt is being criticized for rewriting his personal history on the circumstances surrounding his first divorce, based on the original court documents?
I'm sure Newt is so proud that this wife speaks well, but most importantly "looks" like a First Lady as opposed to the mother of his children. Beware Callista, if he doesn't succeed this time (and he won't), he'll be shopping around again. But then again, you knew he was married when you took up with him. Human errs, right...President & First Lady...no thank you.
If that's the best she can come up with when trying to explain why he would make a good president, then my guess is that even she will not be voting for him.
She looks like The Joker or those people in the castle in Mr. Rogers' backyard. What is up with her face?
Her look creeps me out. She looks like somebody who should be wearing a Nazi uniform, driving a German half-track and chasing Indiana Jones across the desert.
