Callista Gingrich makes rare campaign remarks

Decorah, Iowa (CNN) - It was a rare sight, but Callista Gingrich, wife of GOP hopeful Newt Gingrich, stepped in front of the microphone to introduce her "husband and best friend" at a pizzeria Tuesday.

As much as the former House speaker boasts of his wife's involvement in his campaign, she rarely speaks on the record or at campaign events. She is a familiar face on the campaign trail and at book signings, often standing next her husband at the podium, but she rarely takes center stage herself.

Callista Gingrich, who attended Luther College, chose to make the final stop in Tuesday's Iowa campaign swing in the college town to introduce her husband at Mabe's Pizza.

She shared some of her personal history with a packed room in the basement of the legendary pizza restaurant.

"One little known fact is that I actually lived upstairs above Mabe's Pizza as a senior, so Mabe's is very special to me," she said.

She quickly moved on to tout her husband's credentials.

"A lot of people ask me why Newt would be a good president, and I really think that Newt has been preparing for this challenge his entire life," she said in Decorah.

"He has a proven record of national leadership, a thorough understanding of our nation's history and a genuine love for our country, and I believe he is the best person to lead our country."

    Maggie replied to me with:
"the difference is that Clinton did not run on family values. Gingrich is; Gingrich belongs to a party that fervently runs on personal morals and family values and he’s still trying to now. "
Respectfully disagree, Maggie. Gingrich is no idiot – he knew going in that his past would be thrown at him relentlessly. He's openly admitted his transgressions. In my eyes, it takes quite a bit of courage to do what he is doing. Admission of one's own faults is a prerequisite of righting the wrongs.
‘Never said he was an idiot. And you are right, the whole world knows about his baggage – all of it. The problem is that the baggage never seems to end and neither does his lack of candor. The guy is a cad, through and through. It is his style. His own party is going after him with gusto. I’m never going to vote for him because of his politics, not because he’s Republican but because I find him repugnant, personally and politically.

Callista was an aide dating a married man, if I remember the story. So her family values are in the same camp as Newt's. They deserve each other, but the American people deserve better. Not that I'm perfect, but there are not 300 million people expecting to trust me.

She does not care about her husbands reputation. She knows already. This lady is a gold digger through and through. How do you think she was able to break up his marriage. As long as he takes care of everything she is in heaven. She is riding on his coattails for all the fame and glory as long as she can. She definitely is not first lady material. I tell you our morals for the highest office in America has gone down the sewer. Newt looks like a man who is satisfied with eye candy hanging on his arm. He is saying looky here I have a young botoxed wife. They deserve each other.

Callista Gingrich – Home Wrecking Mistress, what a role model she will be as first lady.

Saying he's been preparing to be president for a long time is an understatement. Didn't he drop wife number one saying she was too old and not pretty enough to be First Lady? I think Calista actually knows which side her bread is buttered on. With her getting the old salamader to buy her Tiffanny jewelry to the tune of $500K, she will at least have a nice little nest egg of jewels she can sell.

Newt is smart, wise and no-nonsense. For these reasons I will vote for him. Unfortunately, when Newt is President, the temperature in the White House will drop 50 degrees as soon as Callista, the Ice Queen makes her entrance.
He’s also crazy. Still going to vote for him? Hope you live in Iowa because you certainly won’t be voting for him in Virginia. And I doubt you’ll be voting for him in the general. Not because I said so but because the Republican party won’t allow that blowhard back. They are both a disgrace.

@clarke, no one is perfect, but to walk around with your nose in the air like you are is the problem. They both only care about their image right now which is a little too late. What you do in the past will definitely affect your future also. Trust and believe it will happen again.

I know a lot of people don't see why so many women would find Newt attractive, especially given the fact that he's a cheating, lying, sleazebucket but there's someone(s) for everyone, and although I personally can't see the appeal of an asexual teletubby lookalike, to each her own, right?

Poor woman. She's now stuck with that pig. Until he divorces her. I guess she must have been after the fame.

It would be better for Newt to keep her out of the limelight – she is not helping him at all! It just reminds everyone that she is the one who had a six year affair with him while he was married to his 2nd wife (who he also had an affair with, while married to the first wife). This type of person does not belong in the White House. Past behavior is a predictor of future behavior, and once a man cheats, chances are he will repeat this behavior (not all men are this way). He has cheated more than once with several women through the years.

"A lot of people ask me why Newt would be a good president, and I really think that Newt has been preparing for this challenge his entire life..." Gee, maybe it's because Newt is an odious, narcissistic toad with delusions of grandeur and an overinflated ego?

What a picture perfect plastic Mrs. Stepford Doll for Newt to keep at his side. Reminds me of Cindi McCain in a creepy sort of way.

Good thing Newton was able to dump his first wife that he said didn't look good enough to be a president's wife, then was able to dump his second wife and trade up to Gingrich Wife 3.0. When Gingrich loses, is Wife 3.0 going to be dumped for a better model?

It really is dismal how the Tea Party RINOs are willing to make all kinds of excuses in order to support this guy.

What standing does she have? For God's sake, she was sleeping with a married man and essentially broke off a marriage.

Oh honestly, the stories about JFK's cheating are legendary! The press helped keep it under wraps.

BTW, anybody check on Obama while the wife and kids were in Hawaii??? Check under the tables for interns? Never know!!!

Is the anything more pathetic than the right wingers s-t-r-e-t-c-i-n-g to try to defend the serial adulterer who would be king and his latest concubine? Bill Clinton you say? Aren't you the same people who keep saying "forget George Bush, its President Obama's economy now"? Yet you want to reach back 12 years for Clinton's behaviors in defense of Newt and his squeeze? Could you BE any more hypocritical? What a bunch of losers.

Obama-bashers: You keep saying he's a socialist and is destroying the country, but you never specify exactly how. If you could give one example it would make you seem like you had at least one brain cell. I guess, though, if you don't list facts you don't have to defend them. Gotcha.
