Romney touts patriotism as caucus nears

Waterloo, Iowa (CNN) - As he tops the GOP field heading into the Iowa caucuses, Mitt Romney offered his closing message to voters in the state with a television ad highlighting his patriotism.

The 60-second spot, titled "Freedom and Opportunity," featured sweeping images of cornfields and Americana.

"In the campaign to come, the American ideals of economic freedom and opportunity need a clear and unapologetic defense," Romney said in the commercial. "And I intend to make it because I have lived it."

A CNN/Time/ORC poll released Wednesday indicated Romney is in a statistical tie at the top of the GOP field in Iowa. A campaign aide said the candidate would host an event in the state on caucus night, a sign the campaign is optimistic about its prospects in the contest.

In the closing days before the caucus, Romney has largely avoided attacking his rivals. Instead, he has focused on President Barack Obama as his campaign works to present Romney as the strongest candidate to take on Obama in the fall.

"The principles that made this nation a great and powerful leader of the world have not lost their meaning – they never will," Romney said in the ad, which also shows images of Arlington Cemetery.

    Patriot?
Before joining college, Romney had received a deferment from the draft as a Mormon 'minister of religion' for the duration of his missionary work in France, which lasted two and a half years. At the time, there was an agreement of sorts between the church and the Selective Service allowing exemptions from the draft for missionaries. Before and after his missionary deferment, Romney also received nearly three years of deferments for his academic studies.

    • In April 1965, Romney registered with the Selective Service but was not considered readily available for military service until December 1970. When he became eligible for military service in 1970, he drew a high number in the annual draft lottery and at that time no one drawing higher than 195 was drafted.

Romney will be the next POTUS despite the avalanche of attacks the current President (without a record to rub on) will throw at him!

Why would anyone vote for a guy that can't even give you his real first name.
    Willard Romney is a phoney.

At least Romney is working. The current incomptent, inept, corrupt, union toady president is on a $4 million tax payer funded vacation in Hawaii with his wife showing off her $2,000 sundresses. He is celebrating how he stole from the Social Security fund to give the money to the dope addicted, non working non taxpaying welfare frauds to bribe them to vote for him in the 2012 election. I cannot get a vacation, I have to work for a living unlike the limousine democrat liberals.

Excuse me, but why do "the American ideals of economic freedom and opportunity" need to be defended? BTW, I hope all the Iowa voters noticed the frames missing from Mitt's campaing ad on "patriotism." You know, the frames showing his military service? The ones showing his sons' military service? The ones showing his federal civilian service?

Yesterday someone wrote that Romney reminded them of the person you find in every office whom you should never turn your back to. The person who says anything to people just so that he/she can get ahead of the pack where it is easiest to hold them back. Every office has those types of people.

They usually work is Sales. Sales people regard that type of behavior as a positive. They have even come up with a name for it, and for the people who are most skilled at it. They are called schmoozers. And, that is exactly what Mitt Romney, the power flip-flopper, would be doing around your office if he worked there. MItt Romney would be the guy who worked in Sales, or even ran the Sales department. The only people who were in his good favor were the brown nosers and schmoozers. Same difference.

Romney 2012 !! The best choice. I hope people notice that he is the best, and will be one of the best presidents. Some can't connect with him, yet I do. I know some, but not many with his characteristics. He might look like not real to some, yet he is the best person you could have as a friend. He is strict, and likes to speak with truth and always thinks ahead before things happen. He chooses his words carefully, like a president should. To many to list...

Romney 2012 ! The best choice for America.

Yep. Very Partriotic. And how many of his kids have served in the Military? Before the rest of you jump on me for this, as I quoted before, I served 12 years in the US Navy on board two SSBNs. That means I was in a combat situation for a good chunk of my Navy Career. I think that gives me some standing on this issue, especially as I joined as a 26 year old who was a victim of Jimmy Carter's economic policies.

Willard Romney strikes me as that even he doesn't believe in what he says. In the dictionary, next to the word "flip-flop" you'd expect his picture there. Next to the words, snake, disgusting, low-life, you'd expect to see Newt's picture. And as Valerie writes on another post, Obama 2012, Huntsmann 2016!

Adlai Stevenson once said, "Patriotism is not a sudden outburst of emotion, but the slow and steady dedication of a lifetime." So, tell me Mitt, were you spending your time in business or were engaged in other endeavors dedicated to serving your country. Yes, you served as a Governor and you did work on the Olympic committee. But you've been casting yourself as the outsider. So clarify for me, which is it?

So what....does he expect people to believe he's going to come out and say he hates America? He's a panderer and hell will freeze over before I'd vote for him.

I am questioning, Does he know the spelling of "Patriotism? What a nonsense. If he did, why did he ship jobs overseas, why he said, "Corporation is also People, My friend". Greed, again.

    ◄PREVIOUS

►The narrator in the ad says "so far Newt Gingrich has admitted his mistakes or flipped on teaming up with Nancy Pelosi, immigration, Medicare, health care, Iraq, attacking Mitt Romney, and more,"◄

And MITTens tells the truth??? This ad should backfire on MITTens!! He did a complete 180 on "everything," including health care!!! In reality, all three frontrunners are LIARS and will have a difficult time in the general!!!

    ►THIS STORY
►"In the campaign to come, the American ideals of economic freedom and opportunity need a clear and unapologetic defense," Romney said in the commercial. "And I intend to make it because I have lived it."◄

Romney feels it only takes running a business to run a country – you know, "corporations are people", remember? This turns many Americans off because to me, he sounds like a "fast-talking salesman" and they tend to LIE in order to get a SALE!!!

Ah the old Republican chest pounding nationalism trick wrapped in swaddling vitriol and carrying a Bible. Backgroud music of America the Beautifuil being hummed by Mrs. Jorgensens 5th grade class. I'm one of you. I'm a Patriot and maybe since it's been a little since George Bush seriously wore it out, I can start using the word Freedom again. Whoa there tiger, not too much now. We saw what it got McCain (well and that screeching banshee he unleashed from Alaska...what's her name?).

    Romney and patriotism? Really??

Then explain why neither he nor any of his 5 sons is a veteran, he "may have lived it" but it was by proxy, through the killing and maiming of the children of the 99%.

The principles that made this nation a great and powerful leader of the world have not lost their meaning – they never will,"

Principles are important. That is why I will not vote to put a non christian in the white house. Principles are important that is why I will not vote to put a professional job destroyer in the white house. Principles are important that is why i will not
vote for a person that will go to war to secure more oil.

Yes Mitt principles are important. Maybe you should come clean with the American people. You are not in this race to save the AMERICAN PEOPLE You are in this race to make more and more money.

How could he even be considered patriotic. He has never served his country nor is he a Christian. He is a dangerous man on a mission for Satan himself.

Just Like Bush. Romney wants to add 100,000 troops when he takes office. He's such a patriot that he never served in the armed forces, had a student deferment and was a missionary in Europe, then got a high draft number in '68 or '69. Now he's going to send more young Americans off to die in another senseless war so his friends in the defense industry like Raytheon are taken care of.

Patriotism, you have to be kidding. Neither Willard or any of his children ever served a day in the military. All of them are George Bush patriots, i.e. send someone else to do the fighting.

I hate to tell you Willard, but your patriotism theme isn't going to fly with veterans.
