Romney's sons defend father against Gingrich lying charge

(CNN) - Mitt Romney's sons defended their father Tuesday against an earlier charge from rival Newt Gingrich that the former Massachusetts governor lied about his ties to negative campaign ads.

Speaking to CNN Senior Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash, four of Romney's five sons weighed in on the state of the campaign on the day of the critical Iowa caucuses.

"You get thick skin throughout this whole process, and we know what our dad's all about," Matt Romney said when asked about Gingrich's "lying" comments. "We love him. We know he's a man of integrity. He's a great example as a father for us, so it really doesn't - we don't take it personally."

On Tuesday, Gingrich was asked on CBS if he thought Romney was a "liar" for saying he didn't have anything to do with a super PAC running anti-Gingrich ads in Iowa. Gingrich answered unequivocally "yes."

Josh Romney said each of the 2012 candidates was running in their own particular fashion.

"We're running in to a lot of great candidates running for president in their own way, but we're here to talk about my dad and why we think he's the best candidate for the president of the United States," Josh Romney said.

As for any negative campaigning against their father, Romney's sons were in agreement that the attacks came with the political territory.

"We know there are going to be a lot of tough ads. Anything that we hear said, we know who he is, he's a great man of integrity and great father and leader. We know we have to have thick skin," Matt Romney said.

Tagg Romney said the ads running in Iowa would only be the beginning.

"Politics is a tough sport. You have to be willing to take the heat. We know there's going to be a lot of negative ads coming from the Democrats in the general election and you have to be able to withstand those things," he said.

Asked if there was anything voters might not know about their father, Romney's sons listed off anecdotes from their childhoods, including Mitt Romney's penchant for playing pranks, and his love for spending time with his grandchildren.

Here comes the old Newt – arrogant – demeaning – rough – unpeasant – dishonest – unfaithful – corrupt – and a little whining kid when he does not win. Newt – go home.

I see Newt's half brother Scott is on this thread - looks like he has been in the bottle for a few days. Amd newt's Aunt Sniffit is also on the thread -– recently out of rehab - and finally GI Joe (who has never spent a day in the military in his life) asking why Mitt's sons are ot in Afghanistan - gee, maybe becasue they, like hundreds of millions of others, chose not to join the all volunteer Army... Get a life Newt – and rein in all your surrogates - the lot of you belong on same farm for the politically challenged...

Wow, Sniffit...stooping to hair comments. You've really lost your fastball, my friend. I hate to break it to you, but the election cycle is all part of the democratic process. I know you think that President Obama can do no wrong and should be President-for-life. But in this crazy democracy we live in we actually have elections where the people get to vote. So sorry the Republican Party is getting in the way, but in a multi-party system, there are going to be candidates on both sides. "Afraid of messing up their hair". Outstanding, Sniffit. Keep it coming.

An earlier post asked an important question ... exactly who, in the Romney family, has served in the United States military? No one that I've been able to identify. Am I wrong? Frankly, we've had three years of a "non-military" President already. I won't vote for anyone who hasn't spent time in the US military for President. If you're going to walk the walk, you better be able to demonstrate more than talk ... and that's all Obama's done ... talk. No military experience ... no presidency.

Another response to the "lying" issue ... As a Mormon, Mitt Romney has been taught that it is acceptable for a Mormon to lie to a gentile (non-Mormon). It is a part of the Mormon culture and society. Lying to gentiles is not a sin ... it is a way to get things done.

@..GI Joe: Amen brother. I have had a family member in every war or conflict since World War 2. Lost friends in Nam, Romney was probably one of the rich that did not get drafted during Nam. Romney has no right to talk about being a true American Patriot.

Romney is the best candidate and will never lie to the American people. That is just a fact, people here on CNN and posting comments really do not matter, as the people voting for Romney are not much into posting comments. People will write crap that makes no sense. Like Debra from Georgia – She writes: "Gingrich might be a liar, but one thing he is not lying about is that LYING ROMNEY. ROMNEY IS THE BIGGEST LIAR I KNOW. ". If he is a liar then how you know he is telling the truth. People will take what they want from Romney's message, twisted around and think they are making sense of it.

    Two words: DREAM ON.
Romney will NEVER be president. The 99% will make sure of that.

Super PACs are the campaign reforms that conservatives have fought for and won. Now we all have to live with it. And we all know that this is "wink, wink, and smirk" stuff. Romney's super PACs may not be linked to the Romney campaign legally, but they are linked morally and de facto. Why doesn't Mitt man up? Acting a little bit like a lawyer, isn't he?

They probably don't know the truth from a lie. Remember, they evidently believe that their service working on Mitt's campaign equals serving in the military and serving America. There is something wrong with their thinking.

Are these the same sons who were too busy campaining for daddy money in the last 8-10 years to serve in the military? Those sons! Who cares what they have to say.

Let's see. Gingrich fought for Super PACs. He got them and now he is the victim of them. Romney claimed to be a great job creator and the people of China and Indonesia thank him for those jobs. Neither Gingrich, Romney nor Romney's sons served in the military. As they are a bit older than I am, Newt and Mitt could have been Viet Nam vets, but are not. Romney's sons could have served in the current War on Terrorism, but didn't. As a Democrat and a Veteran, I am only concerned about listening to what they say that could affect my future as a Vet. As far as I am concerned, they both scare the bejeezus out of me. Then again, so does the rest of their party's current crop.

Never seen a republican, or a reletive of a republican that knew a lie from the truth. Most seem to have a somewhat vision that"s askew from reality, so lies come natural, as long as there's a profit to be recognized or shared with another person of wealth. Also, why arn't the boys in uniform? Are they too good to serve their country?

NEWS FLASH: ROMNEY WINS SUPPORT OF ROMNEY'S SONS. What an unbelievable turn of events! And CNN is right there, as if the feelings of these boys of privilege about their daddy is important or newsworthy. CNN: There to parrot the propaganda, no discernment necessary.

I give the kids a break, because nobody's dad comes home at night and briefs them on every dishonest thing he's doing. And the temptation to say something like "ask Gingrich's first two wives who the liar is" must be enormous.

Mitt is on record saying that his sons are serving their country by campaigning for their father, not because they chose like millions of thers to not volunteeer for service. They have equated serving their father the same as serving their country.
Your crush on Mitts is blinding you, he is married and you will never have him so you might as well start looking at the truth about Mitts, The Republicans have 100% proven that Mitts is a liar.
