Huntsman hits Romney ahead of N.H. primary

(CNN) - Asked about Mitt Romney on Thursday, Republican presidential candidate Jon Huntsman described the former Massachusetts governor as an inconsistent candidate.

"What is your core? You run for the Senate as a liberal. You run for governor as a moderate. You run for president as a conservative," Huntsman said on CNN's "John King, U.S.A." "People want to know who you were yesterday and what you're going to be tomorrow."

Boston Globe backs Huntsman

(CNN) - Five days before New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary, The Boston Globe gave its nod to Republican presidential hopeful Jon Huntsman, saying he offers the Republican Party an opportunity to "renew itself."

"Rather than merely sketch out policies, he articulates goals and ideals," the Massachusetts paper said of the former Utah governor. "The priorities he would set for the country, from leading the world in renewable energy to retooling education and immigration policies to help American high-tech industries, are far-sighted."

Super PAC supporting Santorum to become more active

Washington (CNN) - A group supporting Rick Santorum’s presidential bid is gearing up to become more active as the former senator sees his political fortunes on the rise after a surprise second place finish in the Iowa caucuses.

The super PAC Red, White and Blue is planning to go on the air soon “with a significant buy” of ad time in South Carolina, the group’s spokesman, Stuart Roy, told CNN Thursday. He would not detail when exactly the spots would go up and said the organization hoped to soon release details of the amount of the purchase.

McCain takes aim at Santorum in South Carolina

Charleston, South Carolina (CNN) - Mitt Romney's presidential campaign took its anti-earmark crusade against Rick Santorum to South Carolina on Thursday, with Romney-backer John McCain leading the charge.

The newly ascendant Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator, has come under fire from his GOP foes for his unapologetic defense of the earmarking process, which he says is simply a power granted to Congress under the Constitution.

FIRST ON CNN: Santorum to make large ad buy in South Carolina

(CNN) - Rick Santorum's campaign will officially purchase a major ad buy in South Carolina on Friday, CNN has learned.

John Brabender, a senior strategist with the campaign, told CNN the ad buy effectively means that each South Carolina viewer will see the ads about ten times per week.

Santorum tangles with Gingrich, same-sex marriage supporters

Concord, NH (CNN) - Perhaps it's the decidedly non-Iowan terrain. But Rick Santorum is off to a bumpy ride in New Hampshire.

First, Newt Gingrich diminished Santorum's role in Congress, suggesting Thursday the former Pennsylvania Senator was a "junior partner" in the 1990's Republican revolution in Washington.

BLITZER'S BLOG: Don't crown Romney just yet

(CNN) – Because we’ve seen so many ups and downs in this race for the Republican presidential nomination, I’d like to recommend that we all take a deep breath and let the process play fully itself out.

I say this because so many pundits already assume that Mitt Romney has it in the bag. He’s certainly is a front-runner for the nomination, but he’s not there yet.

Mitt Romney's 'timid' tax plan

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) - If Republican primary voters are inclined to reward candidates who have big, bold, game-changing plans for the tax code, Mitt Romney might be in trouble.

Compared to the ideas pushed by other White House hopefuls this cycle - particularly Newt Gingrich - Romney's plan is just not that aggressive.

McCain courting former South Carolina backers for Romney

Charleston, South Carolina (CNN) – As he campaigns in South Carolina alongside Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney this week, Arizona Sen. John McCain is quietly reaching out to his former campaign supporters to gauge their interest in backing Romney.

A South Carolina Republican source familiar with the calls described them as "a soft pitch, more of a courtesy call" to many of the elected officials who supported McCain's 2008 presidential bid.
