Union Leader publisher sends voters a reminder

(CNN) - The publisher of New Hampshire's largest paper, the conservative Union Leader, has a front-page warning for "conservative Republicans and like-minded independents" in the Granite State.

Joseph McQuaid says they "had better rally around their one strongest candidate or face the very real prospect of having Barack Obama walk all over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney."

- Follow the Ticker on Twitter: @PoliticalTicker

The paper endorsed Newt Gingrich in November, and McQuaid has not changed allegiances. He and the editors still believe "Gingrich's record of conservative accomplishments is unparalleled and his beliefs and vision are passionate and clear."

Gingrich was tied with Jon Huntsman at 7% in Thursday's Suffolk University/7 News daily tracking poll among likely New Hampshire voters.

McQuaid blasts Romney as having won "six fewer votes in Iowa" Tuesday than he did there four years ago. His editorial suggests Romney is a "squishy-moderate Republican," something Gingrich is hoping to portray the frontrunner as in the few remaining days before the primary.

Romney's campaign did not respond to a request for reaction to the Union Leader editorial.

When reached for comment, Romney's campaign pointed to a slate of other New Hampshire endorsements for the White House hopeful.

"We are happy to have the endorsement of the Nashua Telegraph, Fosters Daily Democrat, Portsmouth Herald, Conway Daily Sun, and the Weirs Times who all realize that Governor Romney is the best candidate to fix our economy and defeat President Obama," Romney campaign spokeswoman Andrea Saul said.

Saul specifically pointed to an endorsement Thursday by the Nashua Telegraph, which wrote "Romney is the only GOP candidate with a proven record of success at the top levels of business and government to warrant serious consideration for the highest elective office in the land in these challenging times."

    Mitt's father was the first MexicanAmerican (born in Chihuaha) to run for President
    Mitt's family was so patriotic they fled to Mexico to evade US law.
    Mitt has 10's of thousands of close cousins (some still in Mexico) because a few generations had 12 wives each – One is Huntsman
    Indeed 1 got shot by the husband of a lady that a Romney grandfather "married" (she was still married to another but since Mitt's line goes to an original mormon apostle, he had god on his side till he got shot dead

    Get over it Union Leader! Mitt Romney will be the nominee because he is the only one that can beat Obama. And you know it! Just one question for you Joseph McQuaid: if your guy Gingrich finishes in single digits or low teens in NH next Tuesday will you please ask him to drop out of the race as he's becoming an embarrassment to himself and a distraction to this process?

    Things are bad when your top candidate is a job-killing corporate raider who has spent more time time running for office than serving in one. By the way, did those extra 18 months "serving" as governor make him that much more qualified that Sarah Palin?

    You have to ask what is wrong with the Union Leader that they would emphatically support Gingrich, a once disgraced public official over Romney, a successful business man, committed family man and upright public servant.

    Dont worry president Obama will be in office another 4 years. The reuplicans show they true color when santorum call black people welfare. So people are outrage with the republican candidates they are racist. Romney is not a true republican he a liberal and a flip flopper.

    "face the very real prospect of having Barack Obama walk all over former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney."

    Haha...this guy thinks it would be any different for Newtered than it would be for Captain Buffet Rule? The GOP/Teatroll nominee will get the "anyone but Obama" vote from the stalwart goose-steppers in the GOP and the segment of independents who are misinformed, voting on their frustrations, voting on racism, those who buy into false equivalencies, or those who automatically assume all solutions lie "in the middle" no matter how far out in right field the GOPers/Teatrolls migrate to drag the center of the argument with them, etc. etc. (or some combination thereof). To those people, it won't matter one whit how poorly Mittens or Newtered or anyone performs in comparison to Obama throughout 2012 and they've already made up their minds. They're very likely outnumbered and the only thing that Obama has to do to make sure he's elected is get Dems and intelligent independents who are sick of the GOP/Teatroll extremist hissy fit...get them off their duffs in record numbers again. Easier said than done while the GOP/Teatrolls do everything they can to keep the economy bad and prevent Keynesian stimulus and job recovery.

    Keeping companies alive and salvaging failing ones is very tough. Some people will lose jobs so many others may keep theirs. I guess you would prefer that they ALL lose their jobs just to "be fair"??? BTW, how many people lost their jobs when Obama "saved the auto industry"??? Answer: tens of thousands.

    >By the way, did those extra 18 months "serving" as governor make him that much more qualified that Sarah Palin?

    And Obama had ZERO executive experience and the country is now suffering for it. Mitt Romney has been a success at what he does and is a proven leader. In other words, the polar opposite of Obama.

    So the choice is clear, four more years of divisive name calling, finger pointing and failure with Obama or Romney, a man of proven skills. Only a dummy, or a government dependent, would chose Obama.

    -----------
    Republicans want to privatize SS by turning the entire SS fund over to Wall Street. The SS fund was created for the express purpose of giving people an alternative to risky investments. The government said to The People, "Invest your money with us. We are not out to make a profit. We do not highly paid executives. Your money is safe with us."

    Republicans want to privatize Medicare by turning into a voucher system, which of course, they will later on down the road question the expense and seek to eliminate it entirely. Medicare was created for the express purpose of giving people an alternative source of health insurance coverage because private insurers either wouldn't pick people up, or they would drop you entirely. The government said to The People, "Insure your health care with us. We are not out to make a profit. We do not highly paid executives. Your future health care is safe with us."

    Romney is so NOT ready to lock horns with President Obama, especially with our current "I'm angry, and we're not going to take this anymore" President Obama. Why set Mittens up for an ash-whupping of epic proportions on the debate floor?
    If I were you Mittens I'd take off for France, again, and avoid this war
    as well. I mean, after all, it is not as if you're running for President to help anybody but yourself is it?
    Obama 2012. Seriously America.

    Truth and Nothing But the Truth, he laid off hundreds of people, destroyed benefits and pensions and pocketed the proceeds when he was done: how does that generate jobs? Romney was an abject failure as governor, who had approval ratings that were below 40% when he left office. He knew he stood no chance of retaining his job, so he set his sights on the top job. You made mention of making tough calls: Obama has made the tough calls and been willing to get pounded for it, and the country is recovering because he was unwilling to let millions get thrown out of work. Your boy Mitt was willing to let the auto industry tank out of a lack of principles: seen the latest earnings sheet from the Big 3? They are making money again. Romney was willing to let them go down, see people's life saving and 401ks disappear, all because thats what his ideological bent tells him is best. Only a blind Ayn Rand cult follower or somone who is just angry at life and the world because they want someone easy to blame would vote for the GOP this time out. Romney has spent more time running for office, and has less to show for it than anyone in history. Romney's " experience" ruined companies and lives and enriched him personally, and Obama's intuition and action saved hundreds of thousands of jobs in the auto industry: who is actually doing something to help people and to stabilise our country? Certainly not Mr. Corporate Raider.

    ==========================================================================================
    "Privatize" is false. Your SS fund would be YOURS, not the governments. YOU would control it, NOT the politicians. Should you die, YOUR FAMILY would inherit it, NOT THE GOVERNMENT. The federal government has STOLEN the "trust fund" and left IOUs from a nearly bankrupt government in their place. Does that sound "safe" to you??? And as for paid execs, the government is FULL of tens of thousands of them!! You're kidding right?

    =========================================================================================
    One problem Rudy, Medicare is NOT SAFE, it is bankrupting the country because as it sits, it is fundamentally flawed and unsustainable. Government bureaucrats don't do healthcare any better than they run Amtrak or deliver the mail. Why are people flocking to the USA from countries with government run healthcare??? Answer: THEY STINK!!!

    Truth and Nothing But the Truth, since you claim to be an expert on the auto indsutry, did you actually talk to people in the business who saw factories humming again within months of the takeover? The jobs that were lost were lost because lines were shed, a process that must not ahve bothered you very much, since you seem to to feel that was part of the cost of business and it did nto affect you personally. I saw my father-in-law lose his healthcare and get tossed into the private system, but, he took a longer view and saw it as something that had to be done. Sacrifice is something Democrats understand, and the new GOP does not. You glorify people who send jobs overseas, and ridicule people who oppose that. The GOP has done such a wonderful job of making people vote against their own self interest, but, the jig is up. People are not buying the garbage you and others are selling. I would love to see the a$$-kicking Romney will get in the Midwest when his history of destroying companies comes to full light.

    Really? Saving this country from total economic collapse is a failure? Getting the Big 3 profitable again for the first time in almost a decade is a failure? Killing Osama Bin Ladin and most of the Al-Queda leadership is a failure? I guess through the jaundiced, jealous eyes of a neo-con, nothing is any good unless its a conservative on the deck of an aircraft carrier taking credit for a job half-done.
