BLITZER'S BLOG: A salute to politicians

(CNN) – I know it will probably sound weird but I admire these politicians who are willing to put themselves out there before the American public knowing full well that all their warts will be exposed big time.

Most of them already have lots of money. They could easily coast at this point in their lives and sit back and relax.

I wonder about that all of the time myself. Folks keep trying to get me to run for political office. For what? I probably have more years behind me than I do in front of me. Doesn't the American dream say that I have earned it after working like a dog for 40 years? I know a couple of folks who "retired" and entered political races All that they really want is another revenue stream that is an easy income. Most political positions pay more than well enough, and are part time positions.

Most are simply addicted to greed, publicity and power – like Richard Nixon, Sarah Palin, Eric Cantor, Rick Perry, Herman Cain, Mitch McConnel, Harry Reid, and Tom DeLay. But a very fery few of the finest Americans are actually motivated by a sense of service. I feel Barry Goldwater, Hubert Humphry, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Ron Paul, Henry B. Gonzales, and President Obama fall into this group. This doesn't mean their vision is necessarily good for America nor were their outcomes necessarily brilliant – but the patriotic gesture and the deep dedication to the people is genuine.
