Obama seeks authority to streamline government

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama asked Congress on Friday for more power to streamline the federal government, a move designed to claim the political middle ground in an election likely to be dominated by questions about Washington's role in the economy.

The president asked legislators to grant him "consolidation authority" to merge agencies that perform similar functions. If that authority is granted, Congress would be required to hold an up-or-down vote on the president's streamlining plan within 90 days of its submission.

Uh Oh – it's what the republicans want to do, but coming from Obama the baggers and pubs will call it a job killer.

    Mark my word.

Don't worry. Republicans will try to block this, too, by adding unpalatable and unrelated amendments.

So I guess the GOP will be against smaller government now?

The President is following through on yet ANOTHER committment that he made to us over a year ago during his State of the Union address, if I'm not mistaken. He stated that he would seek to streamline government, and rid it of "duplicate" agencies tha stood in the way of businesses doing business.
    Good job Mr. President.

I think I have heard does words from Romney... Come on people. Obama does not know what he is doing and is taking the GOP lines as what he wants. Let the real leaders lead, not a copy cat. (as my daughter will say) .

Looks like Obama finally did the math and figured out we can't have a monolithic government forever. Congratulations on doing some arithmetic B.O.

There are 273,000 fewer government workers under Obama than under Bush, yet the misinformed viewers of foreign owned media, Fox, rail about big government.

If people would stop with the sound-bite politics that dominate this country and look at Obama's record of what he has done and whay he says he wants to do, then I think he would be at 75% approval rating. But since people are so misinformed and believe the likes of Rush Limbaugh and those of that ilk, then they think he's a big government socialist. He is extremely moderate and has my vote because of his moderate stance.

Really, Mr President. He wants to "shrink" Government all while asking for another 1.3 trillion in an increase to the Debt Celiling. Another Dog and Pony Show. He should not get anything until he is willing to make real cuts to medicare, Obamacare, and all of the other PORK in Govt.

Good Job, Mr. President. Thank you for being a man of your word. It will interesting to see how the Republicans try to twist this one around to their benefit. You are shrinking the government by consolidating agencies, and already there are fewer government employees than under the Bush administration. How will the Republicans criticize this time since you are doing what they have been demanding? Keep up the good work.

Yeah. We need to pay for the budtget that the Republican House wrote. All spending originates in the House.

Now all of a sudden he wants to shrink the federal government??? After 3 years of expanding it and refusing to cut it over the last year??? Yup, nothing but another Obama election year smoke and mirrors BS routine.

hahaha... you mean the one the Democrat Senate refused to pass???

So now you're admitting that the Democrat controlled House in 2007 and 2008 was responsible for the the government expenditures and NOT George Bush.

I just love it when you tie yourself up in knots like this!

"After 3 years of expanding it and refusing to cut it over the last year??? "

And our resident Fakes News manure spreader kicks off his day with a bold lie by ignoring the reductions that have occurred in the federal work force.

Its coming a few months before re-election and not, say, three years ago before our debt went crazy. Also ironic that he's claiming he's shrinking government. For every step forward this administration takes in shrinking the government, it takes about ten steps back. Obamacare alone created 159 commissions and boards! Obama has created 111 agencies.

Obama created 111 agencies during his tenure. If anyone thinks he is genuinely trying to streamline and shrink government, I have a bridge for sale in Brooklyn.

Combining agencies does not mean eliminating them. That is what needs to be done.

Since Obama has nothing to run on, he's going to sound like a Republican going forward, that way all the gullible fools who voted for him may be tricked again!

Obama is not going to change his spots people. This is a snow job to fool the ignorant once again.

Streamline ???? Yea right ! That's why he needs to raise the debt ceiling again. All smoke and mirrors.

Anyone willing to wager that since Obama wants it, the Republicans will block it?

@SuperD – as opposed to the snow job by the GOP? Jobs, jobs, jobs? Remember that one from the house before last year's election. And what have we gotten? Representatives who work for 2 weeks then take a week off, name federal buildings, and attack women's reproductive rights. Just saying.
